Thought the Metallica guys would appreciate this. What a killer cover. All aspects of the recording chain were recorded as true as possible, with as much of the original gear as possible, however guitars were a rev F into an era correct Marshall 4x12 with a 57/421 combo, also from the same era. I believe mark is going to do a total nerd rig rundown of the entire recording process sooner or later too, which will be cool. Thought you guys would wanna hear it!

I though you shit on mic combos like this…:poke:

I generally 100 percent do. And so does mark, the guy who engineered and produced this. However, that’s how the black album was mic’d. The difference? Bob rock was doing it, and in this example, mark Lewis was doing it. Two seasoned pros who know exactly what they are doing. I think the average guitar player does not, as evidenced by the countless YouTube examples of dual mic’d combos. This is just my opinion of course. Mark for instance, his records are 90-95 percent single 57 on the grill, and just because he used two mics to imitate the black album, I can guarantee you he’s not going to all of a sudden start using two mics on a cab on future records. It definitely sounds amazing here to me, and of course, so does the black album. But, it’s in the hands of two pros.

i dont know man, this dosent sound very good to me at all. guitars are kind of fuzzy and lacking punch, the bass is just kind of there and not really adding much, dosent have that bob rock "weight"
Yeah the guitars are fairly weak sounding. Vocals and drums are cool.

Just saw that this morning, very cool cover! Would love to see the rig rundown if he winds up doing that.

Have you heard this one by Chris Stapleton? It's amazing!

I wish the guitars were a bit brighter sounding myself. For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t listen on YouTube of course, it definitely sounds much better on other sources than YouTube like anything else. I dunno i still dig it a lot, I think it’s amazing someone can get this close more than anything, because bob rock himself said he could never replicate this even with the same gear and sessions etc.

Pretty admirable effort, it sounds great. Exactly the same? Of course not, but it captures the spirit of it incredibly well.

57/421 is pretty standard, used on countless records to good effect (y)

I agree, pretty incredible they got this close to me personally. Incredible skill all around from the players to the mix etc. I doubt anyone could get closer I’d say.

Good lesson in masking effects and mix balances here - the bass is much louder and fuller in the cover. It pushes the guitars back and seems to dull them. If the bass was down, the guitars would feel more aggressive - I really don't think they need brightness.

Best way to get great guitar tone in a mix? Get the bass guitar just right!

i agree, I was kind of surprised by the comments on bass in this thread, I can hear WAY more of what’s going on with the bass than the original mix. Like that walk down back G before the 5 ciunt break in the intro going into the pre verse/verse: I had never heard that before in the original mix. Does it make it better than the original? Of course not, but the bass is definitely present and doing ALOT in this mix. The new mix was tracked with the exact same model and year Spector bass that newstead used as well, same electronics etc. that’s just what the bass sounds like I’m told. Apparently it literally sounds like a MIDI piano haha.

sad but true is song number 1 in my a/b list, im not saying this sounds bad but it dosent sound like that black album at all to me and its probably more the guitars. and not being hetfield and newsted

The Bass guitar is too overwhelming in the mix. The guitars definitely sound recto vs. Mark. More granular or “fizzy” on the top end.

The actual amp setup used on the black album would’ve been near impossible to replicate, as a multitude of amps were used and combinations etc, but I agree not as markish. Surprised to see such borderline negative reviews on this, the fact that anyone got this close is mind blowing, and I doubt few could pull this off.

Do you know how the blend and haz on the Spector were set on the original and this mix?

I don’t, but I can easily find out for ya, but knowing mark, I can almost guess it was as flat as possible.
Cool. Yeah, I’d be curious to hear what he did. I have an older NS-2 and I usually set the haz flat or with a little treble boost if the strings have lost their zing lol. With the blend I’m either 50/50, p 75% & j 25%, or all p.

I’m nobody but I can totally smoke those rhythm tones. Send me the tracks minus the guitars. And yes I’ll be using IRs

Did they use the Danelectro baritone for just this track like Metallic did, to add that extra rattly kerrang / heaviness to the guitars that isn't there on the other tracks?

Pretty nice track though, sounds pretty good.
