I normally don't participate in bashing threads (and I know that not what the OP intended). I love Steven Tyler - one of the greatest ROCK songwriters of all time - but this tune was just plain fuc*ing boring.

At one time.... Remember this is the guy who wrote Pink as well

I just went to find that song. Christ. Tapped out after 30 seconds. I forgot what a GEM that was.

But he's rich, I'm not, so fuck me.

But I'll take old school Aerosmith.
Last two good songs were
1. Let the Music do the talking
2. When the lightning strikes (minus the keyboard intro)

I think one of those was Steven Tyler solo, or the JP project? Can't remember.

That was disturbing. Maybe even worse than when Bon Jovi went to the country market to stay flush. I know it's Steve Tyler but for Christ's sake could he have got a chick who didn't look like he'd be fuckin' his grand daughter. A hot, late 30's something and he'd still be robbin' the cradle...

When he couldn't stop some of the auto pilot Tylerism's that didn't mesh with this vibe it was pretty funny.

I'd rather watch a playlist of all the Chris Holmes vids on YT than watch that again. At least he hasn't lost his rock n roll spirit. Plus the girls in his vids are real winners.... :D

I don't mind some country-fied rock... Some KILLER Stones tunes have a country tinge. Gram Parsons had a huge influence on Keef's writing for a while:

Sweet Virginia
Country Honk
Wild Horses
Torn and Frayed
Love in Vain
Dead Flowers

All great and very country influenced...

That said, I didn't really dig the Tyler tune above - sounds like a country instrumental arrangement of the drivel they released when they were writing with outside guys a lot in the '80s and '90s..

He's tryin' to make some scratch though... Worked for Kid Rock, why not Tyler? Nobody wants to buy an Aerosmith record that sounds like Rocks except us, dudes. Hate to tell ya that... but it's a fact... Guy's gotta eat, fuck legacy...

Steve

I'm not really sure why everyone is bitching about this song... Sounded like Steven Tyler to me. ? What else do the guy have to prove? If he' happy, I'm cool with it.

C'mon man, he's been rich as fuck for how long now? 30 years? He didn't exactly get paid scrapings from Paula Abdul's snatch to Judge on Idol either. I think he's a classic case of needs to be hip for eternity and there is no fade into the sunset. He'll try to be happening 'til he doesn't remember who he is.

I'm sure that's part of it as well, but the lifestyle guys like him lead bleeds cash, dude. It's easy for guys like him to spend millions every year... Gotta keep earnin' to live that lifestyle and not end up flat broke. He hasn't been rich for 30 years either - they lost everything to junk by the mid-80s and were starting over...

Let's say you're right and I'm wrong (I'm not though) - who cares what he does and why he does it? He's still the guy who wrote and sang on Get Yer Wings, Toys in the Attic, Rocks, etc. - his legacy and historical hard rock cred is safe no matter what he does now... He's always that guy...

Hate to break it to you but 1986 was almost 30 years ago. I'm pretty sure from Permanent Vacation on he's swimming in money. I agree that he's earned his place in rock history and he's one of a kind in every sense of the word. That song and video sucked ass though. If he did it just because he dug it and not as a lame attempt to hit one of the last decent markets left, more power to him I guess. I don't live too far from Nashville these days and I hear way to much of this shit, so it's starting to grate on me I think.

At least bands like Megadeth have a strong handle on an uncompromising, unrelenting 'fuck you and your country bumpkin top 40 money love'n ass' legacy.

Let's see what Dave Mustaine's up to.

He already earned his legacy, it can't be tarnished. The whole idea that it could be is idiotic.

David Lee Roth can play bluegrass versions of Jump! looking like a goofy douche for the rest of his life and it's never gonna change the legacy of what he did on those first 5 VH albums and tours. He's a legend and that's that...

Wow.

I guess people don't care about legacy anymore.
That went out the window a long time ago. The desire for money without working a "real" job replaced it.

At least he looks healthy, that's always a good thing. He could be doing a lot worse gigs than this. At least he's working on new music.

I hate to break it to you, but those guys were deep in debt from the early 80s and I think you may have a bit of a warped idea of what a band earns from just one album and tour. I'd bet that album got him about even, maybe a little more - certainly not FU money for a high living rock star. They had a pretty shitty royalty deal at that time and were coming off Done With Mirrors which didn't sell shit. It was the next two albums where they re-nogiated where they started earning real money again.

My main point is still that when you live a lifestyle like Tyler does, you have to have continuous income to support it. Spending millions of dollars a year makes it easy to become broke, even if you've earned a lot in the past...

How do you think all these '80s guys who sold millions of records and played to sold out arenas ended up driving shitty cars, living in small condos with mortgages and playing shithole beer bars for cigarette money? Sure there are some who saved and invested, but most ended up like I described... Earning a lot of money and having a lot of money are two different things and completely dependent on lifestyle...

Yeah, I didn't dig it either, but I don't care what he does now. I haven't liked anything since Done With Mirrors...

I kid, of course. But it seems that an artist's work isn't respected enough to get by doing their own thing anymore with the state of piracy. Looks like they have to buckle to "the formula" and what ultimately sells to make ends meet. Or maybe these guys are just getting bored. Hell if I know.

It amazes me how many musicians have zero understanding of how the music business works, or how many fans of a band don't know a damn thing about them. I'm not even an Aerosmith fan and even I know the whole band went broke from a shitty royalties deal (and some shitty music..). Renegotiated, wrote decent rock songs with pop influence and made SOME money back.

There is no money in the music business anymore, but the lifestyles of the old guard haven't changed (unless their hand was forced). Tyler is taking gigs where he can to sustain the lifestyle he is accustomed too. If that means working on American Idol and doing a country record to make money without leaving music, then that's what he (and a lot of other people) will do.

The musicians you look up to don't give a shit about what you think they are. All the fans make up their own persona and "legacy" for bands, and when the band strays from the vision a complete stranger sees, those people get upset.

A band's "legacy" is made up by the fans, who DON'T make the music or live these people's lives.

Edit - Steve beat me to it.
