Live tracks better than recorded version

Hello all,

This is a track by Vai that I first heard on the Visual Sound DVD or whatever it is. The Attitude song.

Again, my first listen was this version. I found it later on the album and thought- boy this doesnt sound nearly as good!

One, I love to listen to, the other is meh:

Most of the song's on Lamb Of God's live album Killadelphia, although I don't care for how they slowed down the song As The Palaces Burn. Everything else is gold though.

I feel the same way about Judas Priest. Unleashed in the East breathes a great life into the early stuff.

Ozzy Osbourne "Tribute" - I prefer all the live Blizzard of Ozz songs to the studio versions (prefer the Diary of a Madman studio versions, though).

Devin Townsend "Ziltoid Live at The Royal Albert Hall/Ocean Machine - Live at the Ancient Roman Theatre Plovdiv" - Prefer almost all the live versions of the Ocean Machine songs. They kind of ruined the studio album for me.

Kiss Alive was recorded live at multiple shows. Alive II was live concert but enhanced with studio "magic."

Peter Frampton comes to mind. His live concert album "Frampton Comes Alive" sounds much better than the original recordings.

Another album that I like is Pantera's Live 101 Proof. Sounds so much heavier than the original recordings.

I recently rediscovered Helloween. I loved them in the late 80s but then stopped listening after key members departed.
Now they are all back as a super avengers type 7man group and they are crushing it. This live video sounds so damn good:

Something kind of related is how much I love Scofield improving with other guitarists and don't listen to any of his recorded tracks.

Really nice! So much of his live output has bad tuning or drug slop issues but that was great.

Happens a lot. I’ll discover older bands, that slipped through the cracks of my formative years, through a live clip that’s really vibrant and raw, go to investigate the original studio album and it sounds like it was recorded in a potato sack.
RE Kiss, I will say Dressed to Kill has a thing about it where I still like the studio recording, but the 1st album is just a no and Hotter Than Hell sounds like it was recorded in a mud slide.
I first really discovered early-mid 70’s Status Quo through Quo Live and apart from Pile Driver sounding great as a studio record, all those songs are infinitely bigger and more rockin’ on the Live album. A lot of their studio recordings lack fire and balls. I still like them, but the Live album just crushes them.
Slade Alive and Alive 2 are just epic in how the songs get turned to up to ten.
On your Feet or On Your Knees was my first BOC album I bought. Those early studio albums are still great but they sounded so much better live.

To ME, the songs off UFO Stranger In The Night Live album, blows away anything off their studio albums.

It’s not even close.
