Live tracks better than recorded version

Van Halen Live: Right Here Right Now

The best tone Ed ever recorded is on that album.

UFO was the first band that came to my mind reading the thread title. Strangers in the Night is killer

My first thought too. I love the 70's UFO albums, but at the same time none of them really capture the band fully. That's true of a lot of bands of that era. I prefer the live albums for a lot of them.

I'll toss out All the Worlds a Stage from Rush. While I don't think the first four albums are that bad, the live take has so much energy and it has enough more grind on guitar that I really love it.

Another: Live in Japan for Deep Purple. There we have the bonus of considerably different arrangements on some songs than the studio......really love a variety of live Purple albums for that reason.

Between the Buried and Me's live albums are always amazing. First time I gave them a chance was Colors Live.

Ozzy Tribute immediately comes to mind. All the solo Ozzy songs are better there than on record IMO. The records sound stiff, nasal, overly dry in comparison.

I think some songs on King Crimson live in Montreal, July 84 are better than the albums. Specifically Waiting Man, Discipline, Three of a Perfect Pair. Amazing live performances.

Tool- Pushit Live on Salival...

TURN THE PAGE. The version that is very well known was recorded live in concert (with no overdubs), and released spring 1976 on "LIVE BULLET". Originally written & recorded in 1972, and released in 1973 on Bob Seger's 6TH studio album titled "BACK IN 72".

LIVE

STUDIO

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Live At Leeds yet. Pretty heavy for its time. It's worth a listen if you haven't heard it. Tons of energy.

Such a huge sounding album, I agree it hits hard. Amazing the power from the Who live. They sound much bigger than Guitar, Bass and Drums.

Everything slipknot ever recorded before the grey chapter sounds better live.

Everything avenged sevenfold ever recorded before the record nightmare is on, sounds better live

Not really an Oasis fan, but their live tracks definitely have more energy and rock to them that the studio versions. Probably all that sibling pissed off drama.

Midnight Rambler off Get Yer Ya-Yas out. The studio version is good by the live one rocks so hard. The changes in groove and tempo are so cool. Mick Taylor has a nasty tone for his solo right before the vocals come back in. One of my favorite tracks of all time.

I recently rediscovered Helloween. I loved them in the late 80s but then stopped listening after key members departed.
Now they are all back as a super avengers type 7man group and they are crushing it. This live video sounds so damn good:

Man, you missed out badly then - Helloween with Andi singing was almost as good as when Kiske and Kai were in the band :dunno:

Have you heard "Master of the Rings" and "Time of the Oath"? They are literally just as good as the Keepers albums.

I love All the World's a Stage. They play with a ton of energy/aggression and the mix balance is great. Geddy's vocals are intense on that release.

Unfortunately they don’t have a full length live album from the 70’s but ZZ Top on Fandango is just filthy and dirty on those live tracks..and the rhythm section is twice as big as the records. Just a glorious thick and greasy tone. The Rockpalast live video from 1980 also just cranks up the filth and puts a whole new vibe and energy into those late 70’s songs.

I was just about to say the Rockplast album but you beat me to the punch

To ME, the songs off UFO Stranger In The Night Live album, blows away anything off their studio albums.

It’s not even close.
Yes, Yes and Yes....:2thumbsup:

Hello all,

This is a track by Vai that I first heard on the Visual Sound DVD or whatever it is. The Attitude song.

Again, my first listen was this version. I found it later on the album and thought- boy this doesnt sound nearly as good!

One, I love to listen to, the other is meh:

Yeah, this one

Out of this world fantastic! 99% perfection.
I don't know what that very end bit was though, could never get through even a few seconds of that

I'm trying to think of a better one...Hendrix is on that level - Machine Gun - Band of Gypsies that note that univibe

Holdsworth did the opposite for me saw him '93 at the Roxy, his stuff on record, I'm thinking I.O.U right now... Unbelievable
I saw there's a live recording out of that night, I don't think Allan would appreciate that.
Vai say he's got a couple of good ones coming out on his label though.
