I liked the JVM410H too, played a lot with our other guitarist's rig when he had one, but always felt something's "missing" or "not quite right" with the tone, as I remembered the sound and feel I got from my 2266.
One thing especially with that particular amp was that his amp did not like pedals at all, no SD-1's / MXR's anything basically in front of the amp. May be it was a grounding issue or something like that, but it sure was quite unbearable to boost the amp with the volume higher than around 2 on the master volume.

The dude actually ended up selling his JVM in favor of a 2466 and man that head has tone for days compared to the JVM.

This is just my humble opinion.
I've run plenty in front of the amp...in fact half my racked pedals hit the front end, other half through the loop...no problems. I will say this, I see no need to run any OD pedal into the OD1 channel. IMO that channels got anything you'd ever want from a Marshall. I've run OD's into the crunch channel and it sounds fantastic. Like any amp...regardless of brand, mileage will vary.

I'm just so used to having some kind of cleanish boost in the front end, it gives me a psychological bit more sustain ;). I do see your point completely about not needing a boost though.

I'm almost 100% sure the amp I played had grounding issues b/c it was the same problem (a substantially loud brrrrrrrrrmmmmmmm) with every pedal.

I agree that the amp is fantastic. Every channel does something great, and it has more chunk than any Marshall out there. It is definitely a studio staple for me.

This one is still on my "MUST TRY" list....
tried the Vintage Modern....eh....didnt care for it. Had great ROCK tones...but the metal side I didnt care for. ;)

I just helped my buddy set his new JVM 410HCF up with his Replifex and All Access pedal. This is his third one and it just absolutely kills. With him running the all access it does all his channel switching for him with the press of one button. Just an all around great setup.

Yeah, the more I read and listen to clips the JVM comes across as a great all around amp with good Marshall crunch qualities. I'm now quite sure the amp my mate had had an issue or two. Bygones anyway that amp!

VM sure has great rock / hard rock tones but as Mailman said I don't think it's that much of a metal amp by any means.
