Maybe a stupid question, but amp recommendation please?

I'd say snag an old ADA MP-1 and throw it in rack bag with a decent power amp like those new Matrix amps some have been using. Super portable. Many good tones. Scalable.

I took a Krank Nineteen80 JR head on a fly-in. Great cleans, but might be a little too loud at 50 watts, two 5881's.

Are you looking for different than the Fender tones? I was going to suggest just going to a Deluxe Reverb, lighter and cheaper, that and a few pedals. If you are looking for something diff I was going to suggest the Tubemeister on your list, found one in GC, took it into the Plat room hooked it up to a 1x12 open back Mesa cab and that thing flat out rocked, had the most perfect crunch tones I have heard in a while from a small amp and the higher gain was awesome, the clean was usable but not great. Fender def has the best cleans.

The easy answer is the 5150 III 50w.
Another is the mini Recto. Much smaller, and lot's of tone.
Both come in at $999 though.
Unless you go the used route.

THIS. The EVH 5150 III 50W is the answer to your search. You won't regret it!

A pretty decent option if your main concern is portability would be a magnum 44 power amp with an AMT legend pedal (they do one thats marshally) and maybe a 10 band eq for a little extra flexibility. Whole thing, minus cabs, would be about 300 bucks. I had one for a little while before I sold off my rack setup, and that shit was fantastic. Sounded great, and was plenty loud for a band. Im running a 5150 212 combo that I got for 425, but if I didnt go that route, I woulda grabbed a 112 and a P1 to go with the mag 44 and just called it a day. Having a kid really changed how I look at gear lol.

What about the carvin v3m? I've had the jet city jca22h and while the lead channel sounded killer it really doesn't have a clean channel. On the crunch channel with the gain low you get channel bleed from the lead like many soldano designs. Another nice combo to add to you list - just to further confuse things - is the rivera pubster. It's a nice amp on it's own and takes pedals very well.

Absolutely legit man, keep exploring the pedal and small amp/cab route. You'll find something. Hopefully you picked up some ideas here.

yessir, this has been most helpful

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions...time to go try some stuff

Id look for the following-

Krank Nineteen80 Jr. or Krankenstein Jr. Pro
DV mark 120 watt head (I forgot the name)
a great Cheap clean amp and a Suhr Riot pedal.
Orange Dark Terror

I would look at what killed my gas...Randall RM50, or RM22 head (depending on the power you need) Get two good modified modules, one for dirt, and one for clean, and a 112 with an effiecient speaker.

I keep seeing these heads for $300 used, and modified modules from $200-$375 depending on what you are after. I am ordering a Jaded Faith texas special for my cleans it is basically fender, and mesa cleans, and low gain sounds in one module. My distortion channel is from a Sacred Groove XTC which has a plexi mode, red, and blue channels with and with out structure, and a gain boost.

I will worn you the RM50 combo amps weigh a lot, but can be found for cheap. There is one locally without module for $200!!!!! If you don't have stairs to deal with some castors could be put on a combo.

I was just looking at those on eBay...haven't seen many of the RM22's on eBay...sources for the modules?

Ever consider the Bogner Alchemist? They can be had for cheap and there are built-in effects.

I've got plenty of effects...and I'm not a big fan of the Alchemist...something is just off with that amp compared to Bogner tones I'm used to.

I appreciate it though

yeh the alchemist is terrible. it's basically a line6 with a bogner faceplate.

JCA22H, doesn't need mods, and a JCA24S 2x12. Well under $1K and no pedals needed.

Alternate: Rocktron VooDu Valve and a 1U power amp. I'm running a 3-space Anvil rack for smaller gigs right now that has a Furman, VooDu Valve Online, and Marshall Valvestate 80 / 80. All controlled by a Rocktron Midi Mate and phantom power.

Can you get good cleans out of either of those?

Absolutely, especially the Rocktron!
