Randall RG100ES + a boost pedal, without a doubt.

The Ampeg VH-140C heads are good too, but they are a little stale sounding. You don't get much feel or response from them... while the old Randall's are almost tube like (they sound their best LOUD too), but with the SS tightness.

I would go with an all tube amp. You have several in you're price range that are great for metal. You will get a much better tone with an all tube amp.

Most solid state amps may sound ok around the house, but sound like crap in a live situation. If you want great tone, go all tube. Solid state is great for keeping manufacturing and maintenance costs down, but when you take price out of the equation and just go for the best tone you can get, all tube wins EVERY TIME!

the crate gx130c is the best bang for the buck id say, and i have that, an ampeg, and a randall century and rg100. you dont need any boosts or anything either. they are on ebay all the time for 200 bucks and under. cannibal corpse used them on "the bleeding". heres a cool clip of them using it

I don't know if anyone has said this yet, because I am way too lazy to scroll through all the posts, but I say go with a 5150 or 6505. Those can be had for well under 1k and they sound great for that style of music.

One of my favorite "bang for the buck" amps by far.

The Pearce solid state heads were REALLY frickin' nice, but I don't necessarily think of them as a "metal" amp per-se. They excelled more at the in-between type tones.
