Yngwie version rocked. No real surprise, though. He gets lots of practice with it; he works it into his solos during concerts a lot. Didn't he damn near start a riot in Brazil in 2001 or 2002 because of it? I think I remember reading that he worked it into a solo and got booed for it, so made a point to work it into every single song thereafer and the crowd got more and more unruly. Funny to see him playing it at a Marlins game though. Like playing in an empty stadium.

And Vai is unreal.

EDIT: here's a link to the Yngwie story. Guess he played it once and got booed, so came back out and played it again and had to end the set because people where throwing shit.

Right on Yngwie

Heck yeah Yngwie!!

Kirk is well known in the industry, and most that are in to heavy music know who he is [...] None of that changes the facts that he is the weakest link in his band.

Haven't heard so much praise for Lars in a very long time...

yup...Kirk's vibrato sucks...Kirk only leans on his wah....Lars can't keep time and uses the same fills on every song...James' voice doesn't hold up anymore....Bla, bla bla. I get it...I really do: they just can't meet the standards of the average Dream Theater obsessed Berkley graduate. But the are greater than the sum of their parts and THE BIGGEST METAL BAND that has walked God's green earth. Based on this fact, I am going to continue to operate under the assumption that they are doing some things right...Regardless of what we all think of their "technique".

Srsly. Regardless of the context, if the topic is Metallica then the haters start lining up to post the same criticism they've posted 20x times before.

And only a cunt would complain about having to hear the national anthem. Next time you hear it, if you don't want to pay attention, use those two minutes to think up some original ways to goof on Metallica.

I don't subscribe to this at all.. first of all, I think Dream Theater vocals suck live. I also think that Metallica has gotten sloppy over the last 5 years or more. The fact that nobody in management or James himself hasn't told Kirk to pay attention to his slop and drenched in wah solos , is a great disservice to fans. That's why on rig talk we can go to town on them :gethim:

It's nothing to do with this. Lars and Kirk do suck. Full stop.

Lar's footwork is horrid. Just thought i would agree with the comment above.

On another note, who else thinks national anthems should not be sung/played at sporting events? Total waste of time

What!!?? That's downright Un-American!! Oh wait, you're from Canada... Never mind. :D

US, Canadian, Portugese, whatever national anthem, they're just tedious and pointless. At least the Canadian one doesn't drag on forever :D

Because Canada doesn't have much to sing about! What does Canada have besides Molson beer, Bryan Adams, and a bunch of Moose? Oh, you got the shitty over paid Boue Jays! :D How's RA Dickey doing in the American League this year?

Millions started listening to Metallica because of their heavy sound, great songs, angry rebellious nature. When they came out it seemed like bands like Iron Maiden and Preist were old fashioned over night. That heavy chunk rhythm sound on the low E was perfected by them, or should I say Hetfield. Once Metallica was well known you could hear soo many other bands copying that heavy sound.

But who wrote the songs from Kill Em All up to the Black album? Who played all the rhythm parts? The guitar solo's aren't why Metallica became so popular and the fact is that you could throw tons of other players into the lead role in Metallica and they'd still be the top metal band. The status of the level of playing of whoever plays lead in Metallica will be raised because the popularity and success of the band.

All the potential bash aside - I'll say this - none of us are streamed online worldwide on all avenues and fronts. Barely any of us have ever been invited to play the national anthem at a sizeable/smaller/massive/huge event. Metallica have been around a long time, godfathers of metal, hate all we want; they're there, we're here.

This unfairly marginalizes Hammett's contributions. Kirk has writing credit on lots of songs in that time period, including on several of their biggest songs.
And solos don't count for anything  ?

And Britney Spears has sold million upon millions of albums, does that mean she has talent? She gets invited to do commercials photo shoots, endorements, etc etc. But Godfathers of Metal? That goes to Black Sabbath.

Good point. Go ahead and post your video of you playing a superior rendition of our National Anthem at a MLB game so we can see how it's really done.

Interesting question.

It would seem since over 100 million people think Britney and Metallica have a talent they are happy to pay to see or have on disc.

How would one say they don't have talent that legions of fans find appealing?

I hate rap, but they have talent.

And FWIW, you don't hear Dio slagging Metallica. He seems to respect what the kids have done. They are kids to him

Dio doesn't slag anyone -- he's dead.
