You should be complaining to your local Government or boycotting sporting events all together instead of complaining about it on a "Guitar Forum".

Hey I'm not the one making a big story out of it...
I just change the channel or mute it ;)

I think this was cool. Everyone has an opinion about anything Kirk or Metallica related. No doubt about it. I just thought I'd see more positive comments from a bunch of guys who mostly dig heavy stuff and are into cool gear.

On another note, who else thinks national anthems should not be sung/played at sporting events? Total waste of time

Not sure if this has been said already in the thread, but it was Metallica night at the ballpark. Show me another city and baseball team who honors their hometown metal band like that!

Funny thing is, Metallica from 1984 would call that selling out! Now, it looks like if there's a buck involved in it, they'll do it.

Naw....if there was any money in it Lars would have been there

Sorry to break it to younger guys but you gain this weird mix of cynicism and sentimentality as you get older. What's important to you changes a lot as the years go by.

Not really. When Justice came out I thought Kirk's playing started to sound like shit. I like Metallica and I'm a fan of the band but Kirk's playing blows. And at 43 I'm listening to heavier stuff now than I did 20 years ago.

I wasn't really talking about music per se. I would say what I like about music hasn't changed all that much in the last 20 years. More how I think about life and what I want out of it. I'm 43 this year. As far as Met is concerned Justice was the beginning of the end. I actually didn't like it at first and only got into it later to fill the void the Black Album created for "newer" Metallica.

I like the canadian anthem before hockey games when I go see a game but hey that's me.. listening to the other 3 clips that were posted, I thought Vai did the best job and i didn't even like his version. Satch was rushed and really nothing special. Zakk was well Zakk.... seeing as we are posting anthems why not the viking? Go big or go home. He kills it and looks like a black clad pirate doing so!

Gotta love how he bends to pitch/key and his crazy clean vibrato.

I don't mind them playing it straight, but it did not say much for Hammett as a musical guitarist of any sort (not that I ever thought he was, anyway). Sounded unrehearsed and not as polished or ambitious as I think they could've done. On the flip side, most of the 14-year-old kids should have no problem transcribing Jaymz/Kirk's version note-for-note.

Not the biggest zack fan but I think he killed it ! Vai's version was pretty badass as well

Yngwie version rocked. No real surprise, though. He gets lots of practice with it; he works it into his solos during concerts a lot. Didn't he damn near start a riot in Brazil in 2001 or 2002 because of it? I think I remember reading that he worked it into a solo and got booed for it, so made a point to work it into every single song thereafer and the crowd got more and more unruly. Funny to see him playing it at a Marlins game though. Like playing in an empty stadium.

And Vai is unreal.

EDIT: here's a link to the Yngwie story. Guess he played it once and got booed, so came back out and played it again and had to end the set because people where throwing shit.

Remember when Kirk used to post here but you guys drove him away by making fun of his vibrato.

and more...

Right on Yngwie

Without wanting to start a giant debate, Yngwie is full of shit in that video. Maybe Sweden was like that in the 1970s but, currently, they enjoy some of the highest quality of life in the world (as do the other Scandinavian countries): far higher than the US, the UK, or the rest of Europe.

I see his point about "not being able to achieve in Sweden what I've achieved in the USA" but, clearly, that's due to the massive population disparity (4m vs 350m) and cultural differences... it's just a silly response without any real grounding in fact.

It's like a car accident. You don't want to stop and stare but you just can't fight it.

Yngwie does make a good point, in relation to what he wants to do and has achieved. I am from Denmark, and we share the same values that Sweden has. If you wanna be a Rock Star it's not the ideal place to be.
But in most other aspects, it's a great place to be. America will crush you if you are not in the top, whereas Scandinavia will provide a decent living for the vast majority of people.
But that's a whole other debate :)

As for Yngwie's rendition of the anthem... Wow. He nails it. F'ing explosive, loud and proud.

Kirk... Not so much. I don't care how succesful he is (but good for him :) ), that was awful. Learn the tune and deliver it like you mean it. He is just so uninspiring.

Yngwie inspires me to play better and practice more... Kirk just makes me nervous.

This is a bit painful to watch, although Jaymz' playing and tone isn't bad, but could use a bit more grit and bite (mids/high end?). I bet they inspired more beer sales though.

EDIT: It would have been awesome to hear Papa Het belt it out with an extra emphasis on the "home of the BRAVE-ahhh"
