Better than I thought it would be. I still wish they'd tighten up their rhythm tone, it sounds too gluey, or something. Agh, at least they will help the metal business along by carrying the torch for a while.

How do you tighten up tone, in general?
Just curious.
Put a clean boost in front of the whole band? :dunno:

I'm going with "cute"....
Can't they write a hook anymore ?

I think it's better than anything on Death Magentic which IMO is a positive. The production is hugely better also. Can't go from the past IMO. They will never create KEA, RTL, MOP, or MOP again. Forget about that if listen to new stuff. They are what they are now.

IMO this is pretty damn good for guys in their 50's that really do not need to create new music at all. They could tour on their old catalog and make just as much money without doing new music. Anyone here that can come up with something better than this song that they personally can come up with is welcome to post it.

What do I expect from them at almost 60?? To retire.

The music is rehashed and uninspired. Call it a day, you were awesome and have no more good ideas. That's ok. Move on to new bands or to produce and mix. Anything. Just no more of the same. I was a huge fan as a kid but they lost me easily in my adulthood. I just can't stand to watch them live anymore. Since Newstead left, they have gotten worse.

I seriously can't believe people are saying they hate it and that its just like the same new Metallica. That couldn't be more inaccurate. Did you even listen to Metallica back in the day? You should go back and listen to Kill 'Em All.

This song fits the same CLASSIC Metallica vibe and has better production. This is awesome and I hope the rest of the album is just as good. Best Metallica in literally decades.

I'm sorry, but maybe I'm just tone deaf.... but this....

Sounds absolutely nothing at all in the same universe as this....

Heavy, melodic, and vocals that don't suck.

Now, I am biased because I HATE punk music, so the new stuff is just going to rub me wrong. I just have a hard time calling that stuff thrash, got to admit it sounds punk"ish" even just a little? None of the old stuff had that flavor at all, just strait up Heavy Metal/thrash.

KEM didn't have a punk flavor?

I dig the song. The solo could be a little longer and the lyrics are a bit weak, but the hook is there. Reminds me a bit of Fight fire with fire. Overall I like it and am looking forward to hearing the entire album.

I think it killed, personally... I also think that if this was '84-'88 EVERYONE would be worshipping it...

I just want to say to all you people out there! This sounds pretty good!

musically it was good...... vocals and lyrics suck.

Hetfield's voice is shot

There is really no way to be nice about this so I will just come right out and say you truly are an idiot.

Either that or you are very ignorant and have not even listened to any metallica in a very long time.

Beyond Magnetic? They did not have one single fast in your face music on there at all. It was pretty much Alt. Rock

LuLu?   I won't even comment on that one.

Death Magnetic? Maybe a couple of fast songs but nothing near as intense as this latest song. Mostly Rockish The Unforgiven type songs.

St. Anger was a joke. Weird, gay vocals and lots of soft rock/experimental type shit. Some kind of Monster   ooh scary. Lame as shit.

Then there is LOAD and Reload which made Metallica seem like a waste of a good LOAD themselves.

If you are into OLD Metallica than yes, this new song seems to be the best release in decades. Nothing else they have released since And Justice resembles old Metallica whatsoever. I am open to corrections but I have listen to them all and you obviously have not.

Not to mention get your fucking genres right. Punk Rock? GTFO

You're the one that comes off like an idiot, ya numbnut bastard. Are you not aware that they have been quoted many times as being partially inspired by punk rock since day one? And, while it's not in everything they do, there are strong traces of punk within the past three releases...particularly in the vocal delivery/and bland lyrics in some of the songs...not to mention, in some of the weak ass song forumulas used. I share the same sentiments as others that have said the past three Metallica albums seem to begin a new era within the band and they all share similar traits. (I don't count LuLu necessarily, because I never heard it....don't consider it to be a Metallica album) Hell, St. Anger took a punk rock approach to the way it was recorded for instance, and then the fact that is has NO solos. If you don't think they have a punk influence in much of their music, than YOU are the one that has blinders on. I'm probably more aware of their songwriting tendencies than you are, ya glorified fanboi. BTW, what the fuck is wrong with you, that you feel it necessary to call someone an idiot just because they have a different point of view than yours? FUCK YOU!!

Again, this is ok, but it simply cannot capture the magic they made on the black album.

Just as long as James doesn't try to hold notes and use vibrato on his voice. I prefer the older stuff without him trying to sing fancy...

I'm generally in agreement with you. I'm not quite as enthusiastic as you about it for these two reasons:

-solo wasn't Kirk's best (but I admit, it's really refreshing to not hear a wah for once!)
-some of the lyrics are really cheesy

I won't say the mix is bad or the guitar sound is no good or whatever. I also won't say the vocal style is terrible and so on.

I do hope the rest of the album is at least this good. It'd be a shame if this were the "stand-out" song. :)

And I'll go so far as to say a lot of the black album love-it-or-hate-it talk wouldn't exist if *this* were what they did on the black album, especially with all the talk of "returning to their roots" at the time (which they clearly did not).

I bought the new Anthrax and Megadeth a few months ago and both are phenomenal. I hope this Metallica album is awesome as well.

It is pathetic that this generation does not have anything on par with what I grew up with. I mean the majority of the bands I was listening to in high school, Metallica, Scorpions, Anthrax, Megadeth, ACDC, GnR, etc, etc. are still putting out music and still destroying on tours. Then you have other bands I listened to like Tesla, Lita Ford, Stryper, etc. still playing the smaller venues. What the hell do these kids have to listen to, other than a few new bands, that is on the same level?

I will take any Metallica music that at least shows they are still inspired, over some of the music I've heard.

I said that too.. but then I realized that if you ask someone ten years younger than you what they are listening to, you will hear names of bands that you have never heard before. Thing is, they DO have bands that they listen to and like... when I listen to some of these bands, some of it is pretty solid. Many people on here will tell you not to live in the past and that there are plenty of great metal bands around now kicking ass. I would agree. There are a lot of new bands in the style of 80's bands, or thrash bands, or even just newer metal type bands. They are good players and they are fresh with fresh ideas. So they have 10 years or so before people get tired of them as well. (or less). Do I listen to anything not 80's or 90's thrash? Not usually... but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Uh, No. Slayer lite was never Metallica's thing but they're doing it here.

I also don't understand why people bring up their age as an excuse. There are many bands from the 80's still releasing very good heavy music that shows no lack of ability or stamina. Testament and Kreator just off the top of my head. If they're too old to release good music they should hang it up and roadie for the Stones...

OK... Just to be clear, not looking for an argument with you, so, respectfully:

This song doesn't remind me of Slayer, but everyone's entitled to their opinion...

Also, I didn't bring up my age or anyone else's age. My central thesis ( :D ) was that if they had released this song in '84-'88, people NOW would be saying how the new stuff they release sucks and it's too bad they don't have the fire they did back in the day on song's like "Hardwired"....

Perhaps that wasn't completely clear...

Anyway, that is what I believe. You can believe otherwise, but let's face it, it hardly matters either way because there is no way to prove or disprove what I said...

That is a good point actually, even though I like the new song. Exodus, Overkill, Death Angel. All of them have been putting out some good stuff.

One other thing I want to add. I've know a lot of people here on this forum and many of them were from Harmony Central back in the day. Just want to say that love them or hate them, nothing starts a good fight on the forum like the subject of Metallica. :D :D :D

Perhaps it's a good point, but not in the context of responding to me because his point has nothing to do with my comment...

One other thing I'll say - I like some Metallica songs, but I sure don't care enough about them to argue.
