Blackened recordings.. First release on a new label, good for Metallica. Keep on Keepin on.. Haters gonna hate.

Huge Metallica fan here....old, middle and current stuff....

I dont dislike it, but I'm not as blown away as others...been thinking about it all night and trying to figure out why as it didnt 'hit' me and left me on the fence about it.

1) I think it sounds too 'dry', as someone said earlier. Most of the 'good' albums people claim had a certain atmostphere to the recording. AJFA seems 'tight/dry' as well, but that seems to be the overall production on the guitars EQ wise. This (DM is similar on some tracks) sounds like there is no 'air' in the track. Everything recorded direct, digital, super gated/compressed and then slapped together.

2) I like the intro, and I am 50/50 on the lyric choice on the chorus...but I think its for a heavier effect rather than childish lyrical approach. He doesnt use f/bombs much when he talks/sings so I'll give him the pass for trying to get more emphasis there.

3) the solo doesnt blow me away, the lead tone seems boxy to me and not as saturated/tight as DM's tones over all.....and I agree with the idea "what happened at the end...did someone not cut/paste the last run?" I almost want to hear the tail end of the solo from My Apocalypse with that ambulance siren trail off....but it just stops and the note that it finishes on, doesnt invoke the feeling that it is the end solo note....now lets finish the song strong...

Overall I'm ok with it, but it kinda sounds to me like My Apocalypse II, which though I like all 3 versions....is better than Unforgiven IV.

The more I listen the more I like,

I seriously can't believe people are saying they hate it and that its just like the same new Metallica. That couldn't be more inaccurate. Did you even listen to Metallica back in the day? You should go back and listen to Kill 'Em All.

This song fits the same CLASSIC Metallica vibe and has better production. This is awesome and I hope the rest of the album is just as good. Best Metallica in literally decades.

DM was good but it wasn't super thrashy and they needed more gain on the guitars IMO. This is where it's at!

The riffs may not be the most amazing riffs they have ever done. They certainly are not but it is a well written song and they are going back to their true roots. Lars is even on point and using double bass. Also James is right, we ARE fucked and wired to self destruct  I guess using the "F" word is childish but whatever, I use it all the time and I agree with the message.

The more I listen the more I dislike it.

I said it was okay before, but it really isn't. The entire song structure is pretty weak, I don't care for the rhythm tones, the vocals/lyrics are lacking and the drums are way too high in the mix (thanks, larz). And, it really is the same old Metallica as of.late....as RJF described, they keep trying to come off as a punk band. I just don't understand how anyone can say this is their best work in decades. It really isn't that good. I hope that this is one of those cases where the first single doesn't really represent the rest of the album.

Alright, I've changed my mind as well. I would rather have a kick in the balls!

Not to be that guy but the tone is good it sounds throwback with a modern twist doesn't hive me that hollow tone of the black album

There is really no way to be nice about this so I will just come right out and say you truly are an idiot.

Either that or you are very ignorant and have not even listened to any metallica in a very long time.

Beyond Magnetic? They did not have one single fast in your face music on there at all. It was pretty much Alt. Rock

LuLu?   I won't even comment on that one.

Death Magnetic? Maybe a couple of fast songs but nothing near as intense as this latest song. Mostly Rockish The Unforgiven type songs.

St. Anger was a joke. Weird, gay vocals and lots of soft rock/experimental type shit. Some kind of Monster   ooh scary. Lame as shit.

Then there is LOAD and Reload which made Metallica seem like a waste of a good LOAD themselves.

If you are into OLD Metallica than yes, this new song seems to be the best release in decades. Nothing else they have released since And Justice resembles old Metallica whatsoever. I am open to corrections but I have listen to them all and you obviously have not.

Not to mention get your fucking genres right. Punk Rock? GTFO

Rhythm Tone is a bit washy. Is KRK using his Fortin on this? I like the Lead Tone tho..

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Don't get me wrong, great sound but there is something about the rhythm guitar from St. Anger thru now that is different than ...and Justice and prior. I'm not sure if it is the way James holds his pick and has slightly changed his palm mute style or if it is a tone thing with a different amp, more mids, etc.

Love this band and the production thankfully sounds great so I'm excited. Just wish there was a bit more of that Hetfield tone from the past but I'm happy. :)

Im a huge metallica fan, they are my fav band but this song didnt do much for me, sounds like a song they would end the album with imo, i give it a 6 out of 10.
kirks solo was ok but seems unfinished, lyrics seemed a little forced in parts, overall it isnt terrible but it doesnt leave me all that thrilled either, the tone didnt do much for me either. im sure theres some great songs on the double album, im glad were getting some new music finally and i look forward to hearing the rest of the songs.

maybe im just being picky, most people really like the song so im prob the odd person who didnt.

As a token Metallica fanboi just have to add that it is all about perspective with bands. For example, I'm seeing KISS in a few days. I know not to expect anything remotely close to what they did in the past and that lets me enjoy the show.

I got into Metallica in high school when Master of Puppets came out. I've been a huge fan ever since. In my opinion, they built up so much that they were bound to hit a big low. I feel like they started over. Load is still my least favorite Metallica album and that probably included Lulu and audio of James taking a dump. My band went away visually, mentally, and tonally on that album. However, great songs on there that I now can appreciate.

After all of the drama with Jason and James, I felt St. Anger was them getting heavy again. Death Magnetic was another step and now this album will hopefully culminate it a well rounded heavy double album. I already read that it is going to be more diverse than Death Magnetic. I want that.

Sounds like a DM leftover, with too trebly drums and meh rythym.
Lead sounded good. Great demo, poor final product.
i also think this is 3rd era meh-tallica

Better than I thought it would be. I still wish they'd tighten up their rhythm tone, it sounds too gluey, or something. Agh, at least they will help the metal business along by carrying the torch for a while.

How do you tighten up tone, in general?
Just curious.

Turn some fucking knobs!

Not bad at all, still can't touch the black album.

And BTW, Sabbath is the greatest metal band of ALL time Mr. Reza

If you like it, great....if you don't, great. Either way, I have no problem with your opinion

Personally, I really did not care for it- it created no feeling for me other than that I wanted it to be over

yeah, I know, I know......haters gonna hate.....ok

It's nothing that makes me wanna buy the album, but it's better than a lot of the stuff they've put out in the last 10-15 years. The snare is mixed way too high, IMHO. The problem with Metallica is the well ran dry a long time ago, but they're convinced they're the greatest metal band in the world. They're too stubborn to just quit or maybe separate and do other projects.

It's laughable that some folks are comparing Metallica now in their 50s, to their Master Of Puppets thru Black album days when they were in their early & late 20s.

Bands almost always create their most beloved material between their early 20s to mid 30s.

Father time always wins.....

I'm sorry, but maybe I'm just tone deaf.... but this....

Sounds absolutely nothing at all in the same universe as this....

Heavy, melodic, and vocals that don't suck.

Now, I am biased because I HATE punk music, so the new stuff is just going to rub me wrong. I just have a hard time calling that stuff thrash, got to admit it sounds punk"ish" even just a little? None of the old stuff had that flavor at all, just strait up Heavy Metal/thrash.
