Sounded like $hit. Mushy. The best part of this is that you can't really hear Hammet in the mix when he plays lead and you can hear how bad of a drummer Lars is. :) I was a Metallica fan but now I guess i am a hater...

Yeesh so much hate for a band that has influenced so many people who cares if its ax fx they played great and are over 50

No hate from me. They are my favorite band by far. There is just no reason for a band as big as Metallica to have shitty tone.

Sounding good on TV is a rarity. Not many bands have sounded incredible on late night talk shows.

They should have used Mark Fives with the Mesa cab clone lol Mesa dropped the ball on that marketing opportunity

They usually sound good with the axe, but this one was not well

Agreed. It just seems that they should be able to sound better than that, with how big they are and their long history. I know it's a tv gig, but surely they can do better than that? :dunno:

I remember when Metallica was good. This isnt the case any longer.

I can also remember when Lars hair line didnt look like Ira's from Mad About You

When I saw them live this summer they were using axe and they sounded awesome

I really like Metallica but that actually sounded like shit. Biggest rock band in the world can't find someone to dial that in better than that?

So, I'm trying to be objective here: what I hear is a lack of "air movement" & what I perceive as a lack of 'leakage'. That is, the amp volume leaking into the drum mics & vice versa. As a result, what we end up with is a squeaky clean drum mix: yes, you can hear everything Lars does & it's no longer masked by high volume guitar sounds bleeding into the drum mics.
Is it better/cleaner - I dunno. It's sure different.
Is it Metallica - I don't think so. They were always tight, but there was volume & intensity & rawness. I didn't sense that in this performance.

I think when I was at the age when this song came out I would have just been thrilled shitless that there was a metal band on TV instead of microanalysing the mix and guitar tone. Anybody still wonder why rock is dead?
