That was probably one of his old 2 channel Triple Rectos. Shortly after/around that time, he started bringing out the VH4 for the one-off shows too. He and Kirk used to only use the Rectos backstage or one-off deals. When they did the grammy's and played a couple sabbath songs, james had the vh4/recto and kirk had the rm100/recto. Both old 2 channels.

James' tone at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Sabbath induction was just massive. Many will disagree, but I thought that the rhythm guitar tones on the "Garage Inc" record were nearly perfect. I am a fan of Diezel amps, but I often think that James should have kept the Wizard MC Head as part of his live rig.

Tone was fine on garage inc for what the songs were but for "typical" older school metallica songs I'd like more bit and aggression and that's mark all around for me. Also, in that "vein" the load tone (curiously, I kind of hear it a bid different than reload) is for me better for that heavy/fat style of tone.

On rock n roll hall of fame, it's weird. First of all there are two videos, one by metallica with better sound overall and one with lower quality. BUT, the lower quality has this awesome guitar tone whereas the official has the normal hetfield iso live tone in a sense. Go figure.

I actually just to watch the garage incorporated thing from 1998 MTV in New York today and their tone is so awesome but I can't tell if he's using a wizard amp or if he's using his rectifier 2 channels I also think Newsteds tone helped bolster their overall tone back then and I love I disappear stone which I think was also wizard amps and is pretty metal sounding to me

The only thing good about their stint is it got me into Craig Ferguson. His show has become a regular on my DVR since.

*supposedly* the garage barrage mini tour had the Modern Classic in the rig but from what I've seen it was his normal rack. At that time it was 4 (2 main 2 backup) triaxis into a strategy 400 power amp. 1 stock triaxis doing the recto and clean, 1 modded triaxis doing the C+ sound. He did have the wizard cabs in use for sure.

craig Ferguson is done pretty soon i'm sad he's hilarious been watching him since he started
Beachbum thanks again for clearing things up for me

The modded triaxis is I think skipping the dynamic voice and using the eqs out of old hacked up studio pres. But in order to do so correctly it needs work because the op amps are always on in the circuit even if you choose for the d voice or loop to be off. He used to have a studio pre chassis that he had it stuffed with two graphics. Cool. Now they are blocks on axe-fx...

What cabs did he use to use before axe-fx? V30s I think in wizard shells?

Could you please elaborate on that what are op amps and do you mean the studio marks I thought they had eq's?

Triaxis uses op amps in the signal path to bring the effects loop and dynamic voice in and out. But even with them bypassed the signal still passes and gets colored a bit through those. Google triaxis op amp upgrade boogie boards etc. Some tried to change it with a better one with minimal results.

Hetfield kind of got around it by modding the path obviously (I don't see him even using (his tech) midi commands? He has them always on like dirt boxes all the time and switches them completely: he had other triaxis for the clean sound etc). He had two graphic eq units from older preamps (he used to use studio and quad back in the day) stuffed into a 2U studio preamp chassis and used them with the triaxis. Clever. That is what I meant: He used the old eqs with the triaxis.

I had both the triaxis and the studio preamp. There was no comparison if you want 110% of the tone vs the features but if you want 90% plus the features you get the triaxis with the dynamic voice. I think boogie evolved it in the pretty cool contour switch etc to be found alongside the graphic in its newer models.

Yup. The studio chassis was the first of a few EQs. Now he has a couple actual handmade boogie EQs (still rack mount, still 2 unit and 2 eqs) which he uses in the studio.

Boogie has done the C++ mod on the triaxis for only a couple people to this point. Money talks ;)
