Also, when are people going to admit that EVH's tone kind of sucks? Its loose, flubby, and extremely fuzzy on top. I still like it, but its criminally overrated. And here is the best part: When people post clips of them "nailing the brown sound," most of the time their clips SOUND BETTER THAN THE ACTUAL BROWN SOUND.

Hehe! I actually agree with you. I never understood why peeps spent so much time and money trying to get that sound. His playing is what made his sound. The "sound" coming from his amp just sounds like a Marshall to me and not even the best Marshall I've heard.

1. To make claim for; demand.
2. To assume or assert the truth, reality, or necessity of, especially as a basis of an argument.
3. To assume as a premise or axiom; take for granted.

I believe I used the word correctly. We are working from two different assumed realities... def 2...

Back off, just checking grammatical content sir.

Carry on.

Agreed, plus it's the driver and not the car. Which is why I think Vic sounds the way he does through his amps.

I dunno man - what is he playing in those clips? Just simple rhythm patterns that any number of guys on here can play much closer in feel to the actual EVH versions. I agree to an extent with what you are saying in some cases, but Vic is not really copping EVHs feel real well IMO...

Steve
But I'm not talking abot him copping EVHs feel. My entire point is that if Vic sounds the same through any PM but no one else does...well, then by ways of m god like deduction ability I'm guessing the missing ingredient with any one else's clips would be Vic.

So what we have here is an amp that sounds EVH'ish when one guy in the world plays through it? Other guys who can get killer tones on many other brands of amps and are great players (billybogner for example) can't capture the EVH vibe with the same amp.

So what is it? Is it the tone literally in the skin on his fingertips and if so, why do the open strings still sound like EVH?

Thats the point Im making. Ive never heard vic play though anything other then his peacemaker and I'll have to humbly disagree with your statement brother. Listen to rockstahs earlier clips. Sounded nothing like his current clips until he found the right combination.

Sorry man...... I just love this whole "the tone is in the hands/fingers" argument. I just think it's ironic that most of the guys who believe that philosophy have some of the most killer guitars and amps on the planet. Knock knock, is this thing on? No disrespect to Ed. I love his playing and he's immensely helpful and has killer taste in gear, we just have differing opinions on this.

I mean if I had EVH's tones just in my fingertips I'd be playing a Mexican strat into a Roland Jazz Chorus and of course since I'm getting EVH tones out of this set-up I could spend all the rest of my money on beer and hookers.

Well at least all you have to do to get toni iommi's tone is to put on plastic finger tips :hys:

The open D/G tone does have some merit here, not much skin involved.

Now we're talkin'!

Seriously though - how much differently can someone play open position Am-G? It is the equipment and not the player there that is going to evoke EVH or not. Simple concept to me. Doesn't matter who is driving the car...

Steve

Another interesting note: I have a few live bootlegs of VH back in the day, like the Tokyo '78 bootleg, where his tone sounds like his recorded tone, but better! tighter low end, less hair on the top end etc...

So now Shea is saying that Eddie used completely different fingers while in Japan in '78?

I'm staying out of the VH part of this discussion. Byt yeah an open position Am-G will sound different from player to player, as will open strings. Should be fairly obvious that where, how, etc...you attack the strings with what makes a difference.

And clearly it matters a ton who is driving the car, when there are POD clips where it sounds closer than some guy with some magically tweaked 3000 bucks head.

IMHO, there is no way that playing an open position Am-G through a cranked 100W PeaceMaker is gonna sound *that* much different from player to player who has reached a reasonable level of proficiency.

And yes, there are guys who can tweak a POD better than others can tweak their 3K amp, but that has nothing to do with the playing. If you wanna say "driving" is better tweaking and a better ear for tone, I'l agree, but in Vic's case, we know his settings. We were talking about playing an Am-G with the same settings through different serial numbers of the same amp model...
