I dig him. GREAT player. Bad singer. :D

Saw he and Robben here for a Renegade Creation show. I suppose it was more of a Robben show because he sang most everything. Mike's tone was just ok. Tough to compete with Robben any day of the week, but it didn't help Mike that Robben was using the Dumble/Super (335/Telecaster) rig and Mike was using a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe.

Mike seems like a real likeable guy and a monster player. I agree with the above posts that if you want to see Mike in his all his glory you should probably go see a Mike show.

But.............any time you can see Robben Ford AND Michael Landau you should go! Support real musicians.

Got a chance to stand about 5 feet from him at this little club in Redondo Beach for about an hour. He was running his CAA / Kerry Wright 2x12 setup with the mpx1 and his black strat. Killed it. Subtlety, grace and power-he really has a way of making the stuff he's doing look simple. I still think of that sound he had going. Would love to see him in that same kind of environment with his Dumble now. Cool clips Kage.

my fave moments were hearing his clean tone from his dumble modded super with the dyno four at the baked potato when vinnie was on drums---unbelievable musicians.

and when his trio played tone merchants, and he used his OD 100 and his black strat and played a hendrix cover. that dirty tone was his best i've ever heard from him.

also saw him at the potato as a trio with jimmy johnson and vinnie...CRUSHING!

saw stolen fish at the short lived baked potato on sunset blvd...cool show--love his wife's vibe--but not magic tones that night.

saw him at tone merchants again with kirk fletcher and his version of "lenny" was beeautiful

and finally when he played at wild west guitars with robben ford in 05; great chemistry that night and the genesis of the renegade creation project

yeah i'm a major fanboi

I was there!! I have seen him a couple of times now and he is simply STUNNING. On his 1st solo tour in Europe, I saw him 2 nights in a row, different locations and although the playlist were the same, it was like 2 completely different gigs.

I have good quality video of this gig, if anybody wants it, lemme know!! I have a LOT of live Landau, I can´t stop listening to him.

Yeah, that´s great stuff, I have Dyno4 at the baked potatoe on DVD, It´s only 4-5 songs but WOW. I think it was recorded in 2000, Mathieson, Vinnie, Abe sr. and Mike.

pretty much everything i've done tone wise over the last 15 years, from my tyler strat, to the hybrid pedal/rack rig i run, to the stereo. wet/dry. and w/d/w experimentation i go through, is directly a result of listening to this guy

far and away my main tone hero and influence.

I created a near duplicate of his rig a couple years ago. OD-100 Classic +. Suhr HSS strat. SD-9, vibe, etc. etc.

It was probably the best tone I've ever had. LOUD but glorious....off the charts ridiculous good.

It's all gone now LOL.

clips?

here's my other tone hero and it sounds like he found his old lead tone again = WIN :inlove: :inlove: :inlove:

he mentioned in an old interview that his clean tone is inspired by holdsworth. ej may have the most pure tone but allan and mike used their rack comps and fx to create more of a sustained stream of sound. ej's tone decays quicker but is dynamically sweeter. you can hear more of the guitar/pickups and the amp.

I don't think I made any clips of that rig. My playing wouldn't have done it justice anyway. It was my first introduction to the beauty of a boosted clean tone. His whole strategy made sense to me then. Because the dynamics and the vol/tone controls on the guitar became 1000x more sensitive. All of a sudden I could understand how he got so much mileage out of them. But that OD-100 really needed volume behind it to smooth out the tone.

CT.

mike definitely sounded like he listened to a lot of VH tones as well

i bought this and the self titled cd at makin music and this song was what first caught my attention, in his mid 90's vintage fender twin tones/pedalboard years

but this was the song and tones from '89 that killed me and made me a fan for life as i started acquiring more of his catalog--benchmark clean and dirty rack tones

it is pretty cool to have seen my main tone hero at ground zero in the center of his w/d/w soundscape at the baked potato, in his home element, just pouring his world famous clean arion chorus sound all over the audience like warm honey, and then dropping the hammer of thor on you with his ultra angry sounds the next moment.

regretfully i haven't seen him live with his studio super rack, but maybe one day he'll treat his fans to the full monty!

but the VIBE at his live show is always so HEAVY ....i got shellacked on the plexi palace after seeing him for the first time and comparing it to people seeing a modern day hendrix...the hard core old timers thought me out of my mind, but eventually the tone speaks for itself now doesn't it.... ;)

another great one from the "tales from the bulge" CD

the golden era of rack tones. this, dann huff/giant first 2 cds, holdsworth secrets era---there was definitely a difference between these guys and the rest of the pack. i think even eddie was trying to play catch up by the late 80s to these guys...

the one i could never figure out was how landau and lukather were so close, but luke didn't have nearly as much tone as landau.

vai was the dark side of rack tone..too weird for me with pitch, thinned out more with wah and vibrato bar nervousness.
