Musicians I never would have thought were doing hard drugs

It's just recently come to my attention that David Gilmour had an addition to cocaine in the 1980s that may have lasted into the early 1990s. I know there's no reason why Gilmour would ever want to tell that public such a thing at the time he was doing it, but it still surprised me. I never would have thought Gilmour would be in the grip of that vice.

I also learned that Gorillaz / Blur frontman Damon Albarn had a problem with heroin in the late 1990s. He just doesn't come off as the type that would get involved with that stuff. Glad he was able to get off of it because I know heroin can be extremely long and painful to overcome.

Anyway, not judging these guys and I don't think any less of them. It just surprised me because I never would have suspected. I guess I was naive. Also, I suspect the pressure was huge for these guys. I'll never understand that kind of pressure.

I'm not being facetious when I say it's a good bet most everyone in the music industry during the 70's or 80's was doing drugs to some extent. I'm shocked you're shocked

I always knew the guys in Metallica were heavy drinkers but was a little surprised to learn Kirk had a long addiction to cocaine as did Lars. Kirk went thru rehab and has been sober, at least off the booger sugar for some time now. Seems like that would have presented its own challenges for James to steer clear of that while fighting his own sobriety issues. Jason was apparently addicted to opioids as well. It shouldn't come as a surprise that they all struggled with various addictions but to learn it was more than just alcohol was somewhat shocking.

Thanks. I should have made that distinction more clear. Acid was well known as being part of Syd's life early in the band, but coke is a very different thing. I suspect musicians resorted to coke to power through the work and feel less pressure from the world.

Man, if there’s a celebrity from the 70’s and 80’s that didn’t do coke then they were an outlier.

But yeah, Gilmour was quite the coke head in the late 80’s through the 90’s and credits his wife, Polly, for getting him off it.

There’s some performances from that era where you can assume there were some nose beers being passed around.

Rich people still do cocaine all the time. As soon as someone busts that trash out I'm gone. Def not my sort of crowd.
