My opinions on gear at NAMM

I was at Namm for 3 days and got to try out a bunch of cool stuff so i thought I'd write up my thoughts.

Amps:
The New Revv Generator mk3 revision sounded identical to the original from what I could tell- I wasn't a fan of the original and same with this one.

Driftwood Purple Nightmare and Purple Nightmare Signature- Really liked these- really tight even without the built in boost, and had a nice grind to it- just a very solid amp with good low end as well. Definitely adding to my list. Signature had a different voicing but in general pretty similar sounding to each other.

Lichtlaerm Prometheus- super wide range of sounds- everyone i heard through it sounded different from each other, but over all a relatively dry amp that is tight and balanced sounding, and has some really unique features like powering other pedals and a really solid gate. The cab came with new 150w fane speakers, and I absolutely loved the sound of them. Daniel was someone I hung out with a bunch, and he is a really cool guy.

Highwind Torrent- Had a very nice bounce to it- amp was still tight but had a squishier response to it- kinda in the direction of Bogner- several switches that altered stuff like brightness, and chords sounded really clear and punchy. This was in the earlier stages of production but already held its own against other stuff I've played and owned. Arachnid Cabs sounded good too- somewhat like the Fryette Fatbottom I have. Jordan from Highwind was an awesome guy to talk with as well.

MLC amps... I hated on them on another post and several people got pissed, but I really didn't like them. The Hex ( new model) was particularly muffled and loose sounding- Vogg was pretty undefined but not the worst, and the Silenoz was not my thing but had a unique grind that I appreciated. It may have been the cabs that caused my dislike of them, but 3 or 4 of my friends independently played them and didn't like them either. I'm hoping it was the cabs.

Badcat amps- not the sound I go for, but do think they were solid for the money or if you wanted a good pedal platform- for pure chug id go somewhere else. The Rubicon also sounded good but as their rep told me, it wasn't intended for metal.

Magnatone- everything sounded great, but their prices are absurd, and the amps aren't that special to warrant the price.

Two rock sounded really good too, but i don't play enough of the intended genre that I'd personally buy one, but I do think they are top shelf.

I asked Celestion if they'd remake the blackback, and they said not soon.

Hughes and Kettner is coming out with a Triamp mk4, but not for at least a year.

Neural DSP had an empty space with the word soon but at least through Saturday nothing else.

Guitar Wise I loved Aristides and OD- OD being something I hadn't tried. The Mayones Regius was really cool. Strandberg released a lower spec 1000$ model. Balaguer had a neck finish that felt like the oiled music man necks- possibly my favorite finish for necks- and can customize everything from neck joint type to installing any kind of bridge if they had the CAD files- I will probably be ordering one at some point this year. Joe is also a really cool guy.

Ill spare you the list of all the famous people that were just walking around, but Devin Townsend in particular was great to talk to.

I didn't get to play the Diezel VH Mini, but i heard it and it sounded pretty good. Soldano preamp was not plugged into a power amp. I didn't get to try the Friedman plexi because i felt weird playing it with him there lmao

Cool review there. Did you get any pics? What is it you don't like about the Revv? I've never played one sadly.

funny
I feel what I like about tube amps is that they’ll have certain frequencies that stand out and give different models different character, whereas the revv stuff doesn’t have that and sounds kinda like a modeler in terms of compression. Anything you want specific pics of? I have some

Thanks. Amps mostly. I don't get to fussed on guitars. It is amplification I like. Remember the old days when there would be like 4 or 5 guys posting page after page of NAMM pics? Sometimes almost real time. I miss that shit. Times have changed though.

Wow, I had no idea Lichtlaerm was coming out with an amp. Nothing on their website. Recently I picked up their Aquaria pedal and was just blown away. Using as a boost, it just makes all my amps crush it. Loved it so much, I picked up King In Yellow and the Spyglass. The Spyglass replaced my EQ pedal and trying different pedals in the KIY loop to blend in. Awesome pedals, fell in love with them.

Would like to know more about that amp if you have any more info?

Check out Sonic Drive Studio on YouTube (he also posts here on occasion). He did an interview with the dude from Lichtlaerm specifically about the new amp.

I've seen a few of the NAMM videos and the only thing that caught my eye was something from Mooer. That KDH guy was at the Mooer booth showing the Prime pedals and he held up a new one I hadn't seen before. Apparently it hasn't been officially released yet. But I guess it's essentially the P2 only with a built in foot switches. Surprisingly it was on Amazon already and was only $179 so I used some of my rewards points and ordered it. Should be here tomorrow.

I have all the info you will ever need from the email they sent:

Lead times & pre-order
We already started building the first batch which will be 15 amps of which 2 are sold, 1 will stay with me and 2 will travel the world for demo videos. This leaves us with 10 pre-order spots on the first batch. As we started on the core circuits, head-shells and all the non-customizable things already we expect them to ship soon after NAMM '24. We will also take pre-orders for the second batch that will go into production right afterwards and will be scaled according to the amount of orders. Soeveryone on this mailing list has the exclusive chance to get in on the first two batches that come with a range of benefits:

- you'll get one of our smart Prometheus footswitches for free that enable you to do MIDI-switching and will bring a 9V-out from the amp straight to your pedalboard while still leaving the option to use the other one of the back of the amp (these will be around 100€ later)
- you'll get a lot of the custom options for free: choice of wood stain, choice of tolex, different knob-styles
- a discount if you want a full amp & cab bundle

Features and design philosophy
We designed the Prometheus mainly as the amp I always wished I had: a high power tube amp with all the modern features you could wish for as a touring, bedroom and studio guitarist.
It's loud, lightweight and is designed to be highly flexible in sound while always retaining a unique voice: while the clean channel is inspired by Fender, Verellen and a bit of Hiwatt the Lead channel has a unique growl and saturation to it and can cover everything from classic rock to sludge and from black metal to ultra modern metal. We paid particular attention to the voicing of the the mid-range which is present and cutting but never overbearing and placed at a slightly different range than you'd usually see on high gain amps: due to this it's really easy to place in a mix where a lot of other amps sit in the same frequency spectrum. I'll add a full list of features and please bear with me on the descriptions: I'm trying not to throw all the buzz-words at you but also don't want to get too technical - ask away if there's open questions!
- 100-180W depending on the choice of power tubes
- 2 1/2 channels: clean & lead with different voicings and a high/low-gain option for the lead-channel
- full-tube design: no solid state components in the amps signal path
- preamp-bypass for use with preamps or pedals straight to poweramp (footswitchable & MIDI-controllable)
- full built-in Key & Gate: triggered from the input, placed before the loop (footswitchable & MIDI-controllable)
- tube-buffered fx-loop
- full MIDI-control with really intuitive setup and "thru"-connector
- standard footswitch inputs (channel/loop) & (defeat/gate)
- optional Prometheus footswitch: programmable, 9V-out (included for pre-orders)
- external bias-points for tube pairs (mix and match all octal tubes to your liking)
- 9V-outlet on the back to power your pedals
- lightweight and compact design
- milled side-handles for easy transportation
- Lichtlaerm-proprietary "cut"-control to change the overall response of the lead-channel: Black Sabbath to Meshuggah and G'nR to Behemoth (much bigger range than on our pedals)
- high headroom clean-channel with two voices: warm (extremely pedal-friendly, based on a Verellen Meatsmoke) and brilliant (a chimey clean based on a Fender Twin with a little Hiwatt sprinkle)
- custom-made potentiometer for usable range on depth & presence pots
- line-out fed from the output transformer (external load or cab needed!)
- handmade in Germany, custom overwound transformers, custom-made knobs
- 19"-mountable with optional adapter
- customizable looks

Custom options
We're trying to keep as many features of the amp customizable: different tolex-options, different wood-stains, different knobs and most notably different poweramp designs and due to power tube choice also different wattages.

Our standard visual design will look a bit differently from the prototype you've probably seen but will still be in the same style:
- dark walnut wood stain
- black/gold front&back faceplate and logo
- vintage Marshall Levant style tolex

This combination was the one that positively stood out the most after trying almost 50 different ones but we're happy to offer different tolex & stain combinations: custom choices for these are included in the price, same as the choice between different knobs:
- Prometheus custom-design skirted metal knob
- standard or mini-chickenheads
- other knobs of your choice (may come with an upcharge)

There will also be options that come with an upcharge - we'll discuss the exact amount directly:
- high gloss finish for the wood
- fully stained headshell, no tolex
- all the crazy ideas that some of you already reached out with!

Power Tubes & prices
As you know we'll offer different tube combinations for the power amp that will change the price, wattage and sound. I'll start with descriptions of the tubes we offer and prices for the different descriptions. The amp changes it's character more drastically depending on power tubes than with a lot of other high gain amps: you'll feel the sound characteristics of the tubes as well as a substantial change in tube recovery (important for transients like palm muting) and headroom - especially in lower frequencies. We use TAD RedBase if available and if not JJ-tubes only:

- EL34: classic british character, mid-heavy, tight bass response (25W)
- 6L6GCM: big, round bass and sparkling highs (30W)
- 5881: smaller, lower wattage version of 6L6, similar sound (22W)
- 6ca7/EL34II: like a cross between EL34 and 6L6, slightly bigger bass than EL34s (25W)
- KT77: a variation of the EL34 - slightly higher power, faster recovery but similar frequency range (28W)
- KT88: great tube but comes at a high price! Fast recovery, deepest bass and most detailed highs with a 3D-sound and HiFi-feeling to it and immense power (46W)

Our preferred combinations are KT88/6CA7 (combination used in the prototype), KT88/6L6 (huge sounding - think Driftwood Purple Nightmare) or KT88/EL34 (tighter and more cutting version). The prices for the different combinations are:

4x 5881: 2699€
4x EL34: 2699€
4x 6L6: 2709€
4x 6ca7: 2709€
4x KT77: 2749€
2x EL34 / 2x KT88: 2799€
2x 6L6 / 2x KT88: 2809€
2x 6ca7 / 2x KT88: 2809€
2x 6ca7 / 2x KT88: 2849€
4x KT88: 2999€

Deposit on the pre-order is 50% of the final price or full payment now. We can not offer a discount for full payments, unfortunately: these are calculated with a rather small margin and at a fair price when looking at similar spec’d amps.

Cabinets & Speakers
We also offer complimentary cabinets & speakers: every cab is visually matched to the amps and is designed to bring out the unique sound of the Prometheus. They come stock with our upcoming LCFR-150 speakers. Yes, we will release our own guitar speaker model in 2024: in collaboration with Fane Acoustics from Great Britain we designed a high power speaker that can handle most amps even in a 1x12! Loud, unapologetic and with a cutting mid-range that is voiced to give you a different, deeper sounding option to the ubiquitous Vintage 30. Full datasheet incl. Thiele/Small parameters on Request!

4x12 oversized Prometheus Cab:

LCFR-150 Guitar Speaker
Designed with Fane Acoustics: modern voicing while retaining all the classic Fane-characteristics: full and deep lows, resonance point chosen for low tunings, thick and rich mid-range with a complex feeling. Very present high mids that cut through the mix but with a round, vintage flavour: the perfect blend of everything we love about modern and vintage speakers:

Chassis: 12“ / 304,8mm Pressed Steel
Impedance: 8Ohm
Power Rating: 150W
Frequency Range: 55Hz-5Khz
Resonant Freq: 65Hz
Sensitivity: 99.34dB

(From a follow up email:)
I just noticed two mistakes in the Prometheus mail:
- the cabs are "complementary", not complimentary: sorry for the confusion here!
- the price list listed 6ca7 / KT88 twice: the price of 2849€ is for KT77 / KT88, 6ca7 / KT88 is 2809€

I have a few phone clips of some amps, but they aren’t really representative of the sound tbh

Agreed. But sometimes those can also give you the 'feel' of the show and such which is also fun. Otherwise, no porn for me.

Is this Prometheus stack up to Wizard??

This may be the worst report post namm aside from the report itself afa pics!?!? Great info but no pics?

Agreed on the MLC. Had a Vogg and it honestly reminded me of an ENGL, and not in a good way. Early decapitated tones and music in general was much better IMO.

Curious about the Prometheus.

I have MLC sSilenoz . Like you say do it’s got unique grind but man with a boost I can get the Obzen tone with insane clarity with grind .i don’t try to talk about and promote them but i did keep that amp in my herd

I really like my Silenoz too. I haven’t tried another amp yet quite like it. It sounds to me sorta like they took a JCM800 and made it modern and black metal-ish. Maybe the other MLC models aren’t as good, not sure

Curious about the Lichtlaerm. I thought the Driftwood Purple Nightmare I had sounded pretty generic/meh with that modern, cardboardy type sound. The MTL I had at the time and a few other amps imo crushed it and the Hell Razor is even better

Thanks for posting, good info, reasonable prices too. Seems a little hard to get in on. The YouTube NAMM video he said they sold the first batch within an hour…

Some interesting guitars there, but the only thing I saw of interest are the new EBMM Majesty colors. Been waiting for a gloss black, I have a Glacial Frost (white), but the new white finish is interesting too.
