I remember back in middle school/high school'ish if I touched my buddies guitar it would shock me. We thought it was because his amp wasn't grounded but never really figured it out. He later got rid of the amp due to chasing a different tone.

This might be a good thing...makes you play less notes...make em count!!!

This real badassed blues guitarist I know saw some kid playing a billion notes a second at GC. He asks me, "Why doesn't he just play one note and really mean it?"

Grounding issue. Make sure your amp has all 3 prongs. Sometimes the building isnt grounded correctly. I played a gig once on a metal flatbed and our AC wasnt properly grounded. I couldnt touch anything without getting shocked.

Static electricity? :dunno:

Ummmm....no....

Sometimes when we play....I go up to the mic to sing...and get a 'zap'...but just dismiss it as that. :D

mate that shit can kill .... stop singing   :D
Ha! Its not much singing....more or less just screaming into a mic. :D
I think its static electricity at my place. Lot of foot shuffling when playing.
I forgot all about that. This was my reality every Friday at band practice. Fun times.

I rehearsed one time at a friends garage out in the sticks. I was holding my guitar and took a knee to check something on my board.

Shorts were being worn that day and as soon as my knee touched the ground ZAP! I almost pissed my pants and forgot who I was for half an hour or so.

Now, I don't know if I oughta go sailin' down no hill with nothin' between the ground and my brain but a piece of government plastic.

(I seriously hope that was the reference you were making... haha)

I gotta admit I'm a bit surprised with the levity in this subject. This is serious business. I've literally seen a singer/guitarist get thrown from the mic into the drum kit, followed by an ambulance ride to the hospital in which they had to jump start his heart. This is electricity we're talking about!

I got shocked stupid(er) when our sound guy first used his makeshift power supply box he'd built. Lightning arced across my face. I immediately stopped, sat down the guitar, walked to the board and made him remove EVERYTHING that was plugged into it before we went any further. I had a old friend come up to me on the way to the board and I couldn't even recall his name. I was out of my mind for a few minutes.

Your guitar, amp, outlet you and/or your sound system is plugged into has lost its ground.

FIX IT OR DIE ( <-- sorry, had to get some yelling in, too).

Seriously, get this worked out without hurting yourself and/or others. Think of the liability if someone else ends up getting hurt or worse using your gear. It's not a stretch of the imagination.

Chevy Chase National Lampoons xmas

WHAT so you saying you don't like to play BUZZED :D

A good "fix" for this is to install a .001 capacitor into the wire that goes to string ground on your guitar...it will only let enough electricity through to alert you there's a problem without zapping you silly...you probably have a bad ground in a power cord or the outlet you plugged into is un-grounded...or the PA has a short somewhere...

Bingo!

I do grounded power cord upgrades on vintage amps all the time. Most recently I had a pre-CBS Fender DR that had 117vac sitting on its chassis if the polarity switch was flipped a certain way or if it was plugged in the wrong way. I practically threw a three prong power cord on that thing.

In one band where I was playing bass, I plugged my bass amp into a grounded outlet. I had a hold of my bass by the strings and stepped up the the mic and zap. Right on the lip. The PA system was un-grounded. I now use my hand to check if the mic is zapping me.

Moral of the story, its likely a grounding issue.
