It's pretty over the top in a lot of ways. It has balls and swagger for sure. Faintly Teutonic in how shameless it is with its boldness and hugeness...
Rev.2 codename "John Holmes"

Don't count on it! The klutz doesn't own any guitar amp or possess any cajones of any kind. Or even play guitar for that matter. It's all smoke and no mirrors.

He's what's known as a "ham tongue".

Awwwwww, Dave... Got all personal and now you're wandering out of the OTC domain, eh?

Go home pig.

Out of curiosity, what is the serial number on the Rev 2?

Not sure how that translates, but I believe it was said to be 155 when its former owner had it posted up over on the Bogner subforum.

Yep, it's 155. A pretty early one. Is the headshell with cloth or the metal grill?

It's the one formerly owned by Adleneknot; black headshell, black cloth, silver piping, non-detachable power mains.

It's in pristine condition - which kinda floors me considering how old it is. The trannies are dated 2001 and a couple of the components underneath are 1999 and 2000. My guess is it was built in 2001. There's some oxidation/rust on the iron, and a few of the solderings are looking a bit murky and oxidized, but otherwise, as far as condition, it seriously looks as though it just rolled off the line. Original preamps are still in place, and I'm not sure as to the ARS (rebranded JJ/Tesla) EL34s, that's an outfit out of Van Nuys and maybe they're original too.

But dead mint - I'm impressed.

The ARS tubes are factory loads. I still have my ARS EL34s as backups.

 So I guess it's safe to assume this puppy is bone stock from almost 12 or 13 years ago... Whoa!!

Wow, that's some old glass! Throw some JJ E34Ls in there and it should be ready to rock!

Well, ya man. This is what I was saying - when I first fired 'er up, I knew she needed some fresh glass, it just sounded like new bottles or at least a re-bias were in order. So I was right. I am going to re-bottle it upon my return. No sense getting into it now - I'm outta here in a matter of days...

But hey, something to look forward to

Definitely. BTW, be sure to bias it to at least 60% dissipation. Mine was really stiff and dull when biased below that.

Mine is at 70% with the JJ EL34s. When I bought it from a forum member here back in 2007 it still had the stock ARS tubes in it, which are rebranded JJs..

A bit premature to ask, as I won't be tackling this until I get back, but are the JJs considered the best in this head? What about KT77s? What about SED =C= brand bottles? Just wondering.

Cheers

I know there have been tube swaps done by members here, but I like the JJs in mine. The amp sounds perfect to me as is, so I just leave them in there. So JJ EL34s it is for me.

I prefer JJ E34Ls in mine. I've tried JJ EL34s, Winged C EL34s, Gold Lion KT77s, Sovtek KT88s, Winged C 6550s, and JJ KT88s in mine. Here's a summary of my thoughts on each:

-JJ E34Ls- Tighter low end than JJ EL34s, more sonically complex, "roars" in the amp and really showcases the lower midrange tonality of the amp
-JJ EL34s- Bigger, more woofy low end. Lacks the tightness and "roar" that the E34Ls have
-Winged C EL34s- Sizzling high end, very detailed but can be a bit harsh and sterile
-Gold Lion KT77s- very balanced tubes, tight low end, nice mids, tamed highs, but a bit "stiffer" than the other tubes
-Sovtek KT88s- more scooped than any of the EL34-type tubes, more aggressive, very tight low end and very sensitive to playing. My second favorite tube in the Rev 2
-Winged C 6550s- awesome mids and detail, but sucks away a lot of the low end the Rev 2 is famous for (could be a good thing)
-JJ KT88s- haven't played these too much, but I do like them better than the Sovteks in my KT88

I prefer all Chinese 9th B preamp tubes. It's been a long time since I've played around with them, so I can't comment on the different preamp tubes I've used.

Well, the good news is JJs aren't expensive.

The so-so news is it seems I'll have to compare the E34Ls to the EL34s :dunno:

And this will obviously have me researching the differences in their inherent design in the interim.

What a sickness

(EDIT: PS, I'm keen to try an LPS in V1 and PI slots. Just to see. Otherwise it's HG Chinese throughout)

Just remember that Bogner had originally said E34L's were a no-no in the original Uber for some reason, so I would look into that. FWIW, I put the 34L's in my long gone Marshall 2205, and they were super loud, and sounded really good in there. I got the GT rebranded ones with a "hardness level" of 1, so they supposedly were supposed to break up very early, and they were still really loud. Especially considering it was a 50 watt amp. Fortunately Ubers are so dark that you could put anything in there, and I don't think it would be overly bright, and afaik no one makes a darker tube than a JJEL34, so you shouldn't be able to screw up in that direction either.

In addition to trying the LPS in V1, put a Tungsol in there as well, and see what that does for you. I used to always run a LPS in V1 of my UL, but I've been digging on a Tungsol in that spot since my last retube. I put all new Chinese 12ax7b's in V2-V5, and I'm digging the heck out of it so far.
