It’s textbook song writing structure with a recipe that works and the lyrics are cheese at times I’ll admit it, but they invoke memories of a bygone era that nothing else absolutely ever can. It’s what those songs mean to people and that’s the point of music.

I'm sure people feel the same way about smoking crystal meth or eating 5 large pizzas

It's just unbelievable to me how everyone on RT complains about having no inspiration, the music they make being crap and/or not being able to create anything, and it's like "Well, what kind of music do you listen to?"

And it's Nickelback, Limp Bizkit, EVH, Tammy Hansen, etc

Gee, I wonder why no one writes any music or creates anything

I'm going to have to go with Dan on this one. Nickelback and Creed are the Filet-o-Fish of music.

I wouldn't even say anything if it was a once in a while thing, just like you wouldn't rag on your friends for getting jack in the box once every couple weeks

but it's like the only music anyone listens to or posts on RT is completely lacking any substance whatsoever, it's fucking exhausting

Because then everyone is doing the guitar version of "Guys I weigh 650 pounds and I can't figure out why?"

Remembering one of the best generations, before the internet and data centers took over the world, is not self harm or illegal like the analogy you proposed.

I think the biggest crime is shitting on divorced dad rock when Green Day just got a signature amplifier in 2026 way past their prime just for the purpose of marketing exploitation as if manipulation is not only acceptable but expected.

Everyone writes for e-cred now and not from feelings. I guess that’s the point I’m trying to make if you can see the dots I’m laying out?

Fullerton College, same as Leo Fender in Fullerton thats where I graduated and got a transfer degree to Cal State Fullerton. Not sure but George Fullerton may have gone there too.....
Was your degree in underwater basket weaving?

I accept you with arms wide open

I'm using hyperbole to illustrate my point - obviously it's not a 1 to 1. The analogy is because it's harmful to your musical development when the only music you listen to is complete crap. Just like if you eat nothing but disposable fast food it's bad for your physical health.

And even then it wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't a constant stream of people not happy with their lack of musical development and lack of creative output - but guess what? Those two things are inextricably linked.

Garbage in, garbage out.

I mean the majority of what I listen to is usually deathcore. Just because I like dad rock doesn’t mean it’s all I consume. Usually I’m putting on rap music or 90’s pop with the Mrs. I consider myself well rounded. I don’t seek out country music but I don’t hate it either. No need to judge people for using music to reconnect to an era they miss man. Sometimes nothing will scratch the itch for McDonalds fries like McDonald’s fries.

I got a Business Associates degree in Business Arts and another in Business Science for Transfer from Fullerton College, same school Leo Fender went to, to California State Fullerton which has the best Business Program West of the Mississippi..... Many of the Professors who taught classes at Cal State would teach the same classes at Fullerton College too like Professor Mummery in Econ or Professor Kahn in Calc.

I think Professor Guest also taught at Cal State for Accounting and he helped Disney go from paper to digital back in the day when they were still using paper in the 90s/2000s.

Pretty much all the hard things like Calc, Accounting and well yeah that's about it has been done, many transfer with a GE for transfer but I wanted to get the hard part over with. Unfortunately just don't have money or want to ask for loans to complete the 4 year but essentially would want to go back one day and just take electives and what knot to get it done.

Also got transferred right when the Pandemic happened and I wasn't going to take online classes and that BS.

The problem with country music is if it is real, then why must you use a bumfucked accent for the vocals. Even that dipshit from australia emulates a southern accent for his songs.

It is the equivalent of kindergarten dress up

That would make a ton of sense if it wasn't literally only mcdonalds fries that anyone was posting about or talking about

Every fucking thread is the same filet-o-fish, french fries, and meat lovers pizza

Every single one

Sticking with the food analogy, It's good to have a well rounded diet and explore different nationality cuisines. That helps keep you in shape and healthy. there's nothing wrong with getting a happy meal every now and again, but when your diet consist predominantly of Big-Mac value meals you end up weighing 650lbs and are gonna die from a heart attack at 55 years old.

Yep. It's just wild to me that the only guitar music that's talked about is the same 5 bands/artists that are basically corporate disposable bullshit

It's not just RT either. It's the same on TGP, only with even more lame corporate disposable bullshit (Lady Gaga, John Mayer, etc)

It's just mind boggling to me that no one seems to understand the correlation with your development as a guitarist, songwriter, and ultimately the art you create - everyone consumes nothing but disposable garbage, and then is surprised when they have nothing to say on the instrument?

This is just my experience...

Me and the friends I hung out with back in the day listened to a lot of underground punk and metal bands when everyone else was going through the grunge era. This was mostly high school for me. Like, we ran into Dax (from Acid Bath/Agents of Oblivion) all the time at random parties before anyone knew who he was. That influenced me a lot in my early teens and carried over to me and my song writing a lot when I was in my mid 20's to mid 30's (2003 - 2013). This was my heyday for being in bands. I was able to come up with really good riffs that turned into songs. I had a bunch of shit in the bank, but lost it all during a flood in 2016 and can't recall much from memory.

Fast forward to the last 5 years or so; It took me a while to recover fully from the flood with gear and playing and all. Instead of listening to my collection of music I've been listening to the radio and pandora for a while. Trying to get back into song writing has been hard. I've gotten stuck in listening to generic, made for everyone songs and my writing has suffered because of it. With a few anomalies that are decent, I feel like the bulk of what I come up with sounds completely generic and uninspired. I'm making an effort to pull out my old collection and listen to that more. Since starting on that I feel like my ideas are slowly improving.

All that to say what I listen to has a big impact on my song writing abilities. Listening to good, inspiring music helps improve what I can come up with. If I listen mostly to generic/garbage music that tends to come out in my writing.

See, the rub is, you have the self-awareness to realize that that's what is going on, and that it's been detrimental to you. That means you know how to rectify it, and why it was detrimental to your development as a musician in the first place.

I have been teaching guitar and touring and gigging in bands for two and a half decades now, and I've had to have this conversation with a ton of students when they inevitably hit the creativity wall - this is so common that it's well known. My guitar mentors and a few other guitar teachers and musicians I know IRL all have had to have this talk with their students and people they jam with.... so it isn't like it's some super duper secret trick.

What is surprising is that with all of the hundreds of guitar players on RT that they don't realize that this is what is happening to them. It is common knowledge among the pros and weekend warriors in my IRL sphere. So it's completely baffling that on RT it's like I'm speaking chinese.
