Kick is noticeably 'clicky' in the mix to me, especially at 4:47-4:57. To me, this song is just Ok, don't think it's going to be one of the standout hits off the album. Really was hoping Kirk would have a revelation in his playing on this album and bust out of these 'blues box' licks he's been doing for so long now. The guy seems to have thrown away most of the tasty lead ideas he had on RTL, MOP, and KTA. Just my opinion though, I suppose many like his wah laced blues licks, just wish he would go back to the drawing board with his playing and try something a bit more outside 'the box'

Boring. Nobody would give half of a damn about this song if it wasn't Metallica.
Agreed. It feels like people are convincing
themselves into liking it. There are so many bands in this genre doing it sooooo much better these days, why bother?

Intro is too long.
Verse delivery is weird.
Chorus is epic and cool.
Solo is McDonald's food.
Harmony guitar part is cool.
6.5/10

Yep. My house sits damn near at the base of Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive the two tallest peaks in CO and 2nd and 3rd tallest peaks in the lower 48 next to Mt. Whitney in CA.

My wife would be jealous. I've been to the top of Elbert and Whitney, I'm sure we'll be back for Massive at some point. She's the hiker, I just go for the breweries after the hike. Colorado has a ton of them.

On the fence? WTF? What else is out there that is better in this genre? Stand on the fence too long and you will probably slip and fall and bust your nuts. Pick a side and be happy there is a good band putting out a record that is not electronica shit and roll with it. :)

"Stand on the fence too long and you will probably slip and fall and bust your nuts. "

Na. I have balls of steel bro ;)

Well tell her we are more than likely going to sell the house there. You guys could have back door access to Massive and Elbert all year round!

Nice!
Yeah I'm not much for bagging peaks, but I did summit Mt. Massive. Been on damn near every square inch of Massive hunting and fishing though.

Just listened on iPhone headphones: did this physically hurt anyone else's ears? I had to stop because it was aggravating my tinnitus, I guess. Ouch.

What I heard was fine. They spend too long showcasing riffs that are boring: should just get on with the song or having riffs that are more interesting. But seemed like a solid effort. Better than a lot of other modern rock or metal I've heard lately.

How can you love old Metallica but not be more into this stuff? Heck, I'd add Municipal Waste, Hatchet, Gama Bomb, Primal Fear, Striker...soooo many bands still doing it right.

I miss sitting in my back yard around the campfire drinking with my wife and neighbors while we watched the headlamps of those poor bastards running the Leadville 100 as they tried to make it back down the mountain in the dark.

James in the Leadville 100 :hys:

I live about an hour from Mt. Whitney.

I'm with you on the kick. On what I am listening on it sounds like it has digital clipping happening. There is an annoying "ting" there

EXACTLY! What are you listening to it on? I am using my monitors (JBL LSR 308's) and it was deafening to me at volume... made my ears hurt.

I dig this song. First one of the new stuff that doesn't sound forced to me.

I don't know what it was, but the song physically made my ears hurt.

Those BAE preamps - low mid hump, and yep, they stacked that hump through the whole mix. Guitars/vox/bass/drums all on BAE. Contributing to the boosted low mid "weirdness" some hear in the kick, though some might think it sounds better thick this way. Metallica I think has been recording on their own Neve stuff for a while, and One on One was a lot of Neve. Some might really like these new tones. Best tones though were Fleming's Trident desk, IMHO. Hetfield used to leave his rhythm guitars uncompressed too, but that ship sailed long ago.

I wonder if anyone knows his amp setup - it's Crunch Berries slaved into the Wizard, or is the signal just split to both, going into the front end of both?

The first word that comes to mind is "meh." There seems to be a love/hate thing for Metallica on this board, but I'm just in the middle for all the new stuff. Some cool parts, can hear the old school vibe at times, but nothing that has gotten stuck in my head like the old stuff...James is awesome, boring drums and solos. Pretty much exactly what I would expect. I thought the production was "meh" too. I'd rate the three songs I've heard so far around 6-7 out of 10 overall. Nothing kick ass, nothing shitty, just "meh"....
