I love it.

I hear the EQ being ripped about 9k on the kick..but thats Metallica.

I dig this song. It gives me that "Maidenesque" feel. Like the tight tone as well.

Nice rig. (screenshot from the Atlas video)

Looks like Het's rocking the 2nd Channel of the Recto... and it's a non-multi-watt model. Interesting selection of amps.

I can't recall seeing them with an SLO in the studio before... but approve 100%.

Loooooove it favorite song so far is Moth to Flame but this one's awesome

In that screen shot- that's Kirk's rig I think? The Dual Recto / Soldano /Marshall labeled Kirk's #1. In other shots/videos, James is playing the Boogie & Wizard together. In Back to the Front, they say he plays rhythm through Kirk's rig to match his parts in order to get a feel for how it will sound together, and live. That might be Kirk's Les Paul too. So maybe James is just doing that as he's creating the song.

On the fence? WTF? What else is out there that is better in this genre? Stand on the fence too long and you will probably slip and fall and bust your nuts. Pick a side and be happy there is a good band putting out a record that is not electronica shit and roll with it. :)

"Stand on the fence too long and you will probably slip and fall and bust your nuts. "

Na. I have balls of steel bro ;)

"What else is out there that is better in this genre?"

Here's just a few. Bear in mind however that this list is by no means all inclusive. That means there are a lot more :)

Amon Amarth
Anthrax
Arch Enemy
Black Sabbath
Byzantine
Carcass
Death Angel
Exodus
Evile
Goatwhore
Havoc
Halford
High On Fire
Judas Priest
Kataklysm
Kreator
Lamb of God
Machine Head
Obituary
Overkill
Revocation
Slayer
Sodom
Sylosis
Testament
Toxic Holocaust
Vader
Warbringer

Right....all those bands have recent drops out. This isn't a greatest hits of all time list is it? I see you are comparing apples to sawdust music category wise as well. Nice one though lol

Yeah, I've not seen any pics of a SLO in the studio before with them, but its pretty cool !
As you said its appears the only amp running is the Recto in that shot.

I agree that the SLO is likely part of Kirks rig sitting under the #1 JMP head. The two tubescreamers on the floor also make me think its Kirks set-up, although the KLON could be James', I think he uses them for his lead boost tones ( from the TC Electronic Gear run video chat with Chad his Tech).

I wonder if he's using the Wizard as a stand alone tone, or perhaps to slave the IIC+ into and mixing with the VH4 for his rhythm work.

Sounds very Maiden-esque, a little disjointed for sure but I'd listen again! Feels a little more old school and so glad they ditched their 2000s sound

Am I nuts or do I hear a faint chorusing effect in both guitars throughout the song?

That was the first thing I noticed when I heard this song yesterday. My ears instantly lit up.
It's not a washy Rush-like chorus sound, or the super-80s rack detune thing or just a chorus pedal swooshing in front of the amp. It's a lot more fainter but just enough to give some strange width and phasey-EQ type sound, like it's been set so super slow you hear more of a phase-notch effect than a big swirl. The effect disappears when James' guitar is on its own in the earlier part of the song, but comes back in when both James' and Kirk's guitars play together.

I like this one the best out of the three that have come out so far. 'Hardwired...to self destruct' didn't grab me at first, the "ringy" guitar tone kind of put me off. "Moth into Flame" sounded better riff-wise but I liked it a hell of a lot more when I heard it played in the '...And Justice For All' guitar sound. But this one got me straightaway. I hear the Iron Maiden-like phrasing too which I really like.

I've seen Kirk with that Marshall Plexi (labelled "Kirk #1) since 2002 when they were recording St. Anger. Kirk said at the time he uses it "for more bark". I don't know what "bark" means tone-wise.

I thought the Plexi, Soldano SLO and the Recto were Kirk's rig? Strange though that the Recto is turned on yet the Mesa/Boogie and the Wizard are turned off in that screenshot of the video. I guess he must be playing through the Recto, yet I don't hear it at all from him in the song.

Actually if you new your facts everyone of those bands has had fairly recent album releases with the exception of Halford (2010) which is still more recent then Death Magnetic (2008). Nearly all of the bands listed there are very much active.

So were actually comparing apples to apples, thanks for trying though, I appreciate your efforts

No you aren't but keep thinking you are. Genre wise (which is what I am talking about here if you could pay attention) those bands don't even remotely line up. You forgot Cattle Decapitation and the Journey remakes to compare with the the new Metallica since all your listed bands are in the same category.

I've seen pics of him with the IIC+ and the Wizard both on and both with cables in their front input. Here's one with the Diezel as well. Seems he's using all three, maybe with a splitter. If slaving, not sure why I always see the Wizard with a cable into the front. I don't have a clue though.

Also, the processing equipment and drum mics used that I see, just watching the videos:

Pultec EQP 1 Equalizers (x4)
Tube Tech LCA 2B (x1)
UA 1176 (x1)
GML 8200 (x 3)
Retro Instruments Sta-Level (x1)
Aphex 204 Exciter / Big Bottom (x1) for rack toms
Lucas Limiting Amplifier (x1)
SSL XLogic G Series Compressor for Drum Buss (x1)

SM57s and 421 mikes on Toms
KM84s on Floor Toms
KM84 taped to SM57 + KM86 on Snare
Kick Beta 91A x 2
AKG C12 x2 High Overheads
Violet Amethyst x2 Low Overheads

I figure the Sta Level since it's not doubled up is used tracking Het's vocals. Might be using the 1176 too.

How can you love old Metallica but not be more into this stuff? Heck, I'd add Municipal Waste, Hatchet, Gama Bomb, Primal Fear, Striker...soooo many bands still doing it right.

The new Testament is bad ass hope they tour with Metallica

But did you count the TubeScreamers lying around? I saw 3.

I don't understand why people always feel the need to compare Metallica with other types of music out there. I like Hendrix and the Beatles, but also like Testament, Rival Sons, Lamb of God, etc., etc. They are all different.
