I liked They're sound up until And justice for all.
They lost they're edge around the black album.

It's funny when you watch them live around 89' and now.
Totally different attitude.

Different attitude? No shit?  They weren't even 30 back then. They're over 50 now. I sure hope they're attitudes have changed. Had they not, I'd say they've lead very depressing unfulfilled lives. They've got success and great families. What's to be pissed about?

I also think that AJFA is the last Metallica, but I'll accept a black album if that's the best they've got .

Excellent work, I'm hearing Thin Lizzy coming back into their material especially Atlas Rise. Hopefully they'll visit San Antonio again in 2017.

I still like to put on the '89 Seattle vid from Binge and Purge and watch a masterful display of epic metal. It's amazing to watch Lars, especially as he lays it down with such authority compared to how he's played since. The mellow transition into MOP gets me every time and the sheer intensity from everyone is why they were absolutely untouchable back then. It's not even that they're older now, it's like the essence of what makes someone have drive, purpose, the fire in the mind and belly....it's not just diminished with age. It's been eradicated.

-its become cliche ~

-stop drinking, doing drugs & fucking groupies, your music sucks-

Ya, the Black Album was the final curtain call.

Actually I think their attitude has not changed that much. Lars is still a crazy douchey lunatic, Kirk is still a docile low profile dude that only appears when a solo is needed, and James is the only one who changed something of his personality, which is that tought fake guy personality he had back then because of his trust issues. But he is still passionate with a sense of humour.

What changed is obviously that they don't have the same energy and drive, which is obviously normal bearing in mind they have the age right now to be grandpas, and obviously they have achieved everything a musician could achieve and more decades ago.

After all that happened in the last 20 years, hearing something like Atlas, Rise! or Moth Into Flame makes me extremely happy. This is old Metallica as how it should be.

What?!!!!! Dude, how can you watch any of the three videos and think they do not have any drive or purpose? This is the most focused this band has been for years IMO.

I see guys doing it because it's all they know what to do, not because they're intensely driven to do it. But that goes for a lot of older bands. Rock music, especially metal was never meant to be old. There's a certain period in your life where for great rock to be created the stars must align in energy, aggression, passion and talent etc. This is usually between 15 and mid/late 20's. It's why almost all group's best records are their first or first few. This new stuff is not terrible by any means but anyone who thinks it's great or amazing is nothing short of delusional. Wanting it to be so, even badly, can't make it true.

Even most of the bands mentioned as counterpoints to the age argument that put out solid stuff will never eclipse their early records.

I see your point and understand what you are saying. The only thing I would counter with is that bands like Motorhead, Metallica, Testament, etc. will do this until they die, and as a fan I want that as long as the music is still great.

I understand that they can't compete with their old records but for me, there is a definite line separating bands from my youth who gave up and those who try to still bring it as best as they can. Like I said, Motorhead, Metallica, Testament, Anthrax, etc. come to mind. With that said though, Master of Puppets is my second favorite album of all time, only behind Appetite for Destruction from GnR.

Unfortunately, how passionate we all argue about a band like Metallica etc is just a reflection of how few quality bands have taken up the torch of what these bands started. So we still rely on our heroes to bring it even though they probably should have hung it up long ago. But our heroes firing at 75-85% is still delivering the fix we're not getting elsewhere. No disrespect to the bands you mentioned as i grew up digging them all but I shouldn't really be caring about what they do in recent years. There should have been a good 20 years of bands eclipsing them. But....nobody could ever eclipse Lemmy. He was that one in a million, son of a bitch whom I'm glad never stopped.

Been listening to the 3 new songs a bit more and its still just not doing a whole lot for me. Sounds mundane, a bit sterile, boring really. Not saying its horrible, just no catchy riffs or vocals, nothing to really draw me in; no hooks. Has a very clinical dry feeling to it.

So I confirmed today through a friend of mine who is still in Colorado that James is indeed living there now. Explains the Leadville, CO T-shirt.

27 years will do that. I'm sure all of us that were around in '89 are much different now. Still pretty impressive the over 2 hour live shows they put on now. Still one of the best live bands around IMO.

Personally I think this is going to be a really good album. I don't even try to compare to their early years. If I want that I can still listen to those albums.

Wonder if there will be a instrumental or ballad on this album?

It is confirmed that there is a ballad on the album written by Larz.
He is going through some type of anxiety and pain management for his overactive siatica.

Sound good better than anything else recently since the black album

No offense, but I see so many here refer to the Black album in reference to Metallica's last greatest but IMHO the Black album was the start of the downhill trend in terms of the music I care to hear from the band. AJFA was the last great album from Metallica.
