New projects incoming; Amp kits

Since you have the layouts, you could also just source everything yourself instead of paying someone else to put a bunch of parts into a cardboard box. A "kit" is just paying someone to grab parts and box them up for you. Chassis and turret boards and everything else available from plenty of places here in the USA...

I could source everything myself, but sometimes you can't beat the convenience of a kit. The cost difference of Modulus' kits vs sourcing everything myself is pretty negligible. I'm also still a novice at this. So having the peace of mind of knowing I'm getting all the correct parts in the kit is worth any extra cost.

@MadAsAHatter which country are you in? If US, I'd be curious of the shipping/import fees?
Here's the details on shipping and the tariff stuff.

As already stated it took just shy of 30 days to finally be shipped. Kits were shipped UPS and are scheduled to be delivered this Wednesday (3/11); so 6 days in transit from Scotland/UK to USA

UPS sent an email today that a tariff was due. It said I had to pay the tariff before the package would be delivered and if not paid before the scheduled delivery date an additional $12 surcharge would be applied. I paid online to avoid the surcharge.

The tariff ended up being $63.20.
The cost of the 2 kits were about $1200 (about $600 each kit) not including shipping; which equates to a 5% tariff fee.
That's actually cheaper than the sales tax I would have paid if purchasing a kit in the US.

Did this arrive yesterday? What are your thoughts on the packaging and quality of everything?

Yeah, both kits were delivered yesterday.

They were sent as one shipment in 2 separate boxes; one kit in each box. Both kits were packed up really well. Everything was placed in the box with enough packing to protect it and make sure nothing shifted around. The turret board and all small components were placed inside the chassis then had packing around it to keep that from sliding around. The face and back plates were wrapped in bubble wrap then tucked in to keep them safe.

All the hardware, knobs, sockets, etc. were placed in one bag, wire in another, and small components placed in another. I'm not sure how much wire I'll need, but it definitely looks like they included more than enough to go around. The small components were all mixed together so I'll need to put a multimeter on them to sort through all that. Doing this seems to be pretty standard for kits. I ordered a couple of kits form other companies and hardware and small components were mixed together too.

The only paperwork that came was the parts pick list. It had hand written notes to show my selections where applicable; like F&T caps, faceplate color, etc. It also had check marks & other notes showing all the parts were accounted for. The layouts are on their website for download, though I do wish they provided schematics too.

I haven't fully gone through everything yet, but on first inspection the quality appears to be really good. Transformers have some heft to them like they should,. The chassis is steel and has a good thickness. I touched around the holes and didn't feel any burrs. Hardware and such looks pretty standard. Turret boards are nice and thick. Turrets are seated properly in the board; nothing was loose.

The face and back plates are about 1/16" plexiglass so they're a little floppy. That's a pretty standard thickness though. I learned this the hard way, but anything thicker than that and pot shafts won't be long enough. The overall design of the plates are nice. All of the label engravings are nice and crisp. I selected brushed gold and brushed aluminum plates. Not sure how it's done, but even though they're not metal it looks like they are.

So far I'm satisfied and it seems to be a quality kit. Considering what others like Mojotone sells kits for, I think you get a good bit for your money with Modulus.

That's good to know.. the next time I build, I'm going to use him. Like I said earlier, some amp guru told me he is an EE and his layouts are designed to be quiet and well thought out. I like that he includes the choice of mods and parts too.

I just purchased my next couple of projects. Two amp kits from Modulus Amplification in the UK.

The first one is called a Frankentone Plexi. It's an EVH style 50 watt NMV Plexi with a switch called "Brown" that will drop the voltages like putting an amp on a variac.

The second is their Deep Fried Marshbar. This one is like a hybrid of M-type tones. It's 50 watts and controls are laid out like a JCM800 with an added Resonance control and a 3-way switch that lets you select from hot-rodded plexi, JCM800, and SIR #34 type tones.

The kits let you select from grades of components. For both I chose CTS pots, F&T filter caps, and Mallory coupling caps. Modulus says their transformers are made in house and are based directly off original Drake transformers. Assuming I'm able to build these kits successfully they should be right up my tonal alley. I'm looking forward on starting these projects.

DUDE. Please give updates and photos as you build those amps. I'd love to see that. And then of course...CLIPS! Congrats on scoring those kits. Hey, did you do the recovering on those Crate amps you have? They look badass!

It may take a week or two before I start working on one, but I'll do a build thread for each. I want to build the headshell first since it's easier to position the chassis when it's not loaded down with the transformers. I'm making my final decision on if I want to do a covered shell or natural hardwood. Either way I'll need to buy some supplies for that.

Yeah, I recovered those Crate amps. They needed a good refresh and I didn't want to do basic black. Aside from the snakeskin there's a secondary theme when you put all 3 together; Red, White & Blue. 🇺🇸
Those are some of my favorite recovers along with my Mesa Mark III and Randal MTS100 with matching cab. And I actually built the cab from scratch. It's a 212/115.
