Van Halen (the band) pretty much died in 1981 after Fair Warning. Why prolong the pain?

Right there with ya!

But I will say that I'm curious about this new project and hope it kicks ass. Mark Tremonti is a friend of Wolfie's and was hanging-out during the sessions and was impressed. But we shall see. Oh... and I hold no ill will toward Wolfgang, but to this day it pisses me off that they just dumped Michael the way they did for him. Pathetic...

Why don't we all just wait and treat it like a new/no name band and compare it to all the ABSOLUTE SHIT that's crammed down kids throats on the radio and MTV these days!
What? This is blasphemy! Wait and see? That's crazy talk.

If Eddie isn't playing Eruption II through a cranked plexi all the music on the whole CD is going to suck ass. Don't you know?

I don't think that is possible for many. The bar is impossibly high. It has to be played like a 20 year old lighting up the scene in the late 70s early 80s, instead of by a guy who moved on from the 80s after the 80s.

I think Van Halen continued to kick ass until 1995. I liked both eras of VH pretty much equally. I thought they matured as a band with Sammy and wrote a ton of awesome tunes up until Ed became an angry hard to work with drunk The overall production of their songs was alot more polished than the early raw VH...which was on an another level for that period of time than anything else imo. To me there just isnt a bad VH album except for VHIII. I cant say that for most other bands

I really dug "Me wise magic" and "Cant get this stuff no more" back when they did those tunes with Roth years ago. I'm hoping for more of that type of material

I like VHIII as well, at least in terms of guitar writing, anyways. I just don't think there was a magic with Cherone. I'm with you on Sammy though. Great stuff written in that era as well.

As long as Eddie has gotten away from the porn stint stuff, I'll be happy.

Yeah, we'll, they're still white... Whatever that's supposed to mean.

I'll bet not one of those guys can dunk on a regulation goal. Betcha the old ones can't even touch the net!

all im saying is jsut to know when to say when.. if they are touring and playing old stuff that is cool, but coming out with a NEW album is just dumb.. they arent going to be able to top there old stuff.. and 25 yrs from now im going to remember them from this latest album and how bad it sucked... I hope this record is kick ass but we all know it wont be....

Interesting. How does one know when the peak has been reached and to give up making millions of dollars from then on?

I dug some of Ed's vibe during later stuff, even if it didn't come close to the early stuff. Sometimes when I'm in the mood on a Saturday afternoon, I'll crank-up my stereo and my XTC and play along with "The Seventh Seal". Not a bad tune IMO.

Just to play devil's advocate... Music is subjective so topping the old stuff is a matter of taste. There are many who think the Hagar era music tops the early DLR era stuff. Even if it wasn't a matter of subjectivity, what's wrong with continuing to do something they love? Simply rehashing the glory days isn't enough to satisfy musicians that are accustomed to and love writing music. People across all disciplines from business to sports to music continue on even after the possibility of hitting the proverbial home runs of yesteryear are long gone and still provide value to their respective industry above and beyond many of their peers.

I rest my case.

There's lots of Sammy era tunes that I really like. Not better or worse, just different. Pleasure Dome is one of favorite VH tunes of any era.

One thing Eddie always had going on, regardless of who was the front man or what year it was, was that he continued to write and play like no one else. He didn't hash out different versions of the same stuff. It was all new but still unique to EVH.

Eddie's a musician and wants to do his thing. What's the big deal? If you don't want to hear it don't buy it. No matter what this record does it will have zero baring on his legacy. And hey he may surprise you and come out with something cool. I can't wait to hear it.

I hope Ed never comes across this thread.

Dude, judging by what Hagar has said about him, Ed is a lot more vicious and hardcore than this thread will ever be. No worries there.

Nonsense. They should just retire or go back and bask in the glory of the good old days. This moving forward a beyond what has been done already whether they love doing it or not is just futile. We must not move beyond our comfort food.

Always two sides to every story. Not saying there isn't truth in what Hagar has said but in that situation you have two guys with massive egos.... the "whole truth" rides in the middle I have no doubt.
