3rd Suhr I've owned. Comes with a fun story

I went to Japan recently, only came back earlier. I went to Ochanomizu. before the last day. I was just window-shopping at first, but after walking up and down the entire street in the rain (and it seemed to never stop), I remembered that Ishibashi had a really cool collection of Musicmans (Musicmen?), Andersons, Schecters and Suhrs, and I might as well walk back to the middle of Meidai-dori and walk out with one of them.

Clerk couldn't speak English other than a few sentences. I couldn't speak Japanese more than a few sentences, but I got to try the guitars I wanted, and damn. This one looked amazing, sounded amazing and was well-priced. It has a 2-piece quartersawn maple neck/board, a mahogany body (doesn't appear to be chambered), and an Aldrich pickup set with an ML in the middle.

I think John Suhr, and a few other peopele, said before that he didn't like the Mahogany body + maple neck combo as much as the other combos, and I can see why. It does have quite a focused fundamental note and fewer harmonics and "bloom", but hey that also makes it sound pretty focused and cool
🤣

After deciding it looked so nice and had really nice specs for the price, I took out the card and passport and made the purchase... then I remembered I forgot to check if it came with a gigbag or a hardcase. Of course it had a hardcase. After dragging it back to the hotel in the rain, I realized that I would have issues checking in the hardcase as an oversized luggage, given that my return flight was one of the earliest ones of the day.

So I disassembled the guitar, wrapped the body, neck and bridge in separate bundles of clothes (and plastic bags) and travel pillows and packed it into my baggage. I've never been glad to have overpacked with clothes. The hardcase meanwhile is taking the long trip via sea. Arrived just fine and I spent the next 20 minutes reassembling and setting up.
So the case I'm using right now is borrowed from my other one lol

I'm surprised I like the medium frets as much as the jumbos on the other one ngl

What a beauty.

I’ve recently discovered, I like medium frets when they’re done right. I think growing up, that was something I experienced so seldom that it turned me off to them.

Love that blue Anderson with the pearloid pickguard. Reminds me of Vivian Campbells Anderson. If I could get that with a ebony neck that'd pretty much be my dream guitar.

That was some good thinking. Probably the only way to get it home without spending a fortune.

I was always skeptical about people, even EVH, praising basswood, but maybe there is something to that.

I don't think id have the nerve these days to smuggle a guitar in my luggage.
Glad it worked out.

That one was pretty good. I couldn't gel with that many buttons though

Congrats for the new amazing guitar! I had good luck on the Ochanomizu guitar shops regarding the salesmen’s English language skills. Good that You got everything sorted out. 😎

Yeah most of the stores spoke quite serviceable English

But the one with the biggest international web presence? I had to speak a lot of broken Japanese there lol

But is that was real fun. Enjoyed it a lot

That poor purple one down at the end of the line really needs a home.
