Not getting along with my speakers

Here is the comparison that I thought was cool. Although you'll probably have a lot more luck with what Senior Scumback has to offer.

I suggest you check out the WGS Retro 30's. I can't say enough good things about them for rock/metal. They replaced the UK V30's in my Orange and put a dead halt to all my speaker swapping madness.

I dunno guys, I just can't wrap my head around WGS...

Scumback
Tone Tubby
Celestion
Eminence
Jensen

Seems to me jsut off the top of my head, there's lots to choose from...

V.

Too bad you don't have an open mind, because the Retro's are really great speakers. FWIW, I absolutely hated the ET-65's and I'm not that big on the Veteran 30's or Green Beret's either. But the Retro's are a whole different beast. They are smoother than Vintage 30's but they still cut like a knife. The low end is firmer and all frequencies are articulated well. They also sound great clean.

Here is an observation that I've made, and it may not stand for everyone, but I seem to think I have a good ear for tone, as I do record guitars as a big part of my services:

Every time I buy a cabinet, that was loaded with a particular speaker, and swap speakers, I always end up going back to what was originally in it. My EVH cabinet, I went back to the Heritage Greenbacks, after trying five different quads of drivers. They just sound right to me.

Now, I would sell the cabinets you have you don't like. It may not sound like an easy task, but it should be doable.

Jim at Scumback is a great guy. I've never bought anything from him, but when we did talk, he was a real gentleman, and very honest about his services and business practices. I've heard great things done with M75's, and the H75's.

I'm really digging the Splawn Big Blocks as of lately, as I just got a cabinet from them, and it is by far one of my favorites.

Do you own a Mesa Rectifier Standard cabinet? If not, you haven't heard the best of V30s.

T75s and K100s are not for me. I've had 'em both, and they just don't bring the goods IMO.

Wow, I need to archive this post for posterity.

Thanks very much, sir! (I've got a few people who would disagree with your assessment.)

racerevlon: Somewhere in this pile you can probably find your tone. I've got a demo at 11 am tomorrow, but maybe around 12:30-1pm if you can manage it.

Or figure out if an evening/weekend works. Now that the demo room is almost done (needs the ceiling/wall treatments), you can crank your 50 or 100w (as Brad did last weekend) and it sounds like a TV got turned on outside.

this...is just ridiculous!!!

Well, right now I'm trying to dial in my two Diezel heads:

Herbert-- 2 x 6L6GCSTR, 2 x EL34BHT, 2 x EL34BSTR (all Ruby)
VH4 -- 4 x Ruby 6550 (Matched Quad)

Herbert is going into stock Marshall 1960A 16 ohms mono, 8 ohms stereo
VH4 is going into stock Marshall 1960B 16 ohms mono, 8 ohms stereo

Other cabinets I have available:

Stock Marshall 425A (100W -- Celestion G12C-25) 16 ohms mono, 8 ohms stereo
Stock Marshall 425B (100W -- Celestion G12C-25) 16 ohms mono, 8 ohms stereo

Marshall MC412A (240W -- Celestion Vintage 30's) 16 ohms mono, 8 ohms stereo
Marshall MC412B (80W -- Celestion G12M Heritage) 16 ohms mono, 8 ohms stereo

Crate Blue Voodoo (240W -- Mesa-branded V30's) 16 ohms mono, 8 ohms stereo
Crate C-Series Cabinet (270W true stereo -- 2 x G12T-75's on top, 2 x V30's in bottom) 16 ohms per side
Fender HM412 (120W -- No idea--speakers have no markings whatsoever) 8 ohms mono, 4 ohms stereo
Crate Tall Cabinet (200W true stereo -- G12S-50's) 16 ohms per side

The heads that need to be paired with these cabinets are:

Diezel Herbert
Diezel VH4
Splawn Quick Rod
Splawn Nitro (KT88)
Jet City JCA100H
Hughes & Kettner TriAmp MK II
Marshall Vintage Modern 2266
Egnater Armageddon (eventually)

It's "Match Game!!!"

OK, well I can only tell you what my clients have told me. With the Diezels the go to setup is the M75/J75 65w speakers. I've heard this from 3 clients now, although I'm sure there are other good choices as well.

Well, I told you I was interested, you discussed options with me, and you didn't push me into a sale. You told me to sit on things and find out what I wanted. You also said you would be flexible about how to pay you/different options regarding payment. I would say that is the mark of a gentleman and honest salesman.

Unfortunately, your cabinet was out of my price-range at the time I was inquiring, and I found something that I really loved that fit the bill. (Which turned out to be a Splawn 412 loaded with Big Blocks). Word has it the Big Blocks were modeled after your H75s, and I don't believe in rumors, but if that is indicative of how your speakers sound, they are wonderful :D

You also care a lot about getting a cabinet to its destination safely. I feel the same way about gear, and pack to survive war, because you never know what could happen, and no one likes to open up a damaged amp or cabinet.

All of Pete Thorn's clips have done great justice to your drivers. I'm glad you've got a following, because you deserve it.

Cheers,

-Greg

I may not add much to these forums, but at least people make me feel better about my own GAS.

a very underated speaker
the Weber 12-65 there 65 watt version of an original 30 watt celestion but with a slight treble rolloff. I have them side by side in a cab and the weber just seems like the perfect improvment on the vintage 30 sound.

Their site says it's the g12 -65 tone not the v30 ?

soryy bout dat

still kicks ass !!!!!!!

A couple other things worth mentioning:

Almost without exception all of my cabinets are wired with Monster heavy-gauge speaker wire.

The other day I was playing through each amp as it's currently hooked up, just going down the line and evaluating the tone. Here's what happened:

Herbert into Marshall 1960A--coming along, could be better
VH4 into Marshall 1960B--not impressed, need to pair it with a better cab
Vintage Modern 2266 into Marshall 425A--Great classic tone, great pairing
Splawn Quick Rod into Marshall 425B--thump and grind, pretty happy
H&K TriAmp MK II into Marshall MC412A w/V30's--Nope--need a better option
Splawn Nitro (KT88) into Marshall MC412B w/G12M Heritage 30's--HOLY LORD!!! I don't know what the heck I've been doing but this pairing just knocked my socks off--gotta get clips up soon to validate in the court of public opinion
JCA100H into Crate 412 w/G12T-75 tops/V30 bottoms--what a great pairing. Not ad good as the Nitro, but great grind!
H&K Trilogy into Crate Blue VooDoo 412 w/Mesa branded V30's--I'm convinced V30's aren't the best speaker for H&K--switched to a Fender HM412 and the amp REALLY came alive. Punch 'n crunch.

I'm going to try all of the heads through the MC412B with the G12M heritage speakers and if everything sounds anywhere near as good as the Nitro, this will be my new Go-To speaker (and I'll have a lot of good speakers for sale).

Cheers,

Now that's a room of doom. Did your neighbors yard die before you soundproofed that room?! :D

  Nah. There's lots of space around that room. 25 feet to the neighbors on one side and over 75 on the other. The thinnest wall is 11.5" thick, some are 24" thick. The room is getting more cabs as time goes on.

try some Eminence Governors and Swamp Thangs in 8ohm for the Herbert and VH4!

i've owned a fuck ton of deferent speakers and these would be my pick out of them.

I now see your problem.

Diezel = 1960's stink. even with my 1960AV, it isn't the right setup for them.

You're trying to put a band-aid on scar. it's pointless.

I keep my Marshall cab(v30), because I think it sounds ok with Marshall amps. it's very bright, and has less bottom end than my other cabs...but the presence on it is piercing, and sometimes I like it. sounds best mixed with another different type of cab, with different speakers.

The Best combination for the Diezel's I have found have been to mix K-100's with V30's.

I just sold that Marshall K-100 cab you've heard before, but would like to have another K-100/V30 X patterned cab in the future.

The Bogner Uberkab with V30's and T-75, I'm really trying to give a chance to...but those 75's are just weird...and while it sounds huge, I'm still not sure I like it too much.
I know some folks like them, but I just don't understand why 75's get so much useage.

I think the best bet would to give Mr.Scumback a try since he is just a semi-short drive away.
