Isn't it amazing that it debuted at number 1. And for the youngsters that's when there was a top 100 chart that included every genre. So they beat out Boys II Men and Tim McGraw!

He really was. Just a complete package of a guitar player.

Read where when he was younger he was not allowed To compete in some local guitar competitions since he kept winning them all.

need some love for Power Metal too, that was an epic one for me also. Before they dropped the hammer down so to say, more Priest-ish but very awesome. Does not get mentioned often.

It's funny how many Pantera fans have no clue they were a hair metal band. Great album, terrrrrrrible guitar tone but great songs.

I remember I ordered Far Beyond Driven off of BMG Music. Remember the 10 cd's for a penny? Lol. It took me awhile to get into that heavy of music, but Far Beyond Driven is probably my favorite Pantera album. It's just so nasty and mean compared to Vulgar or Cowboys.

I prefer the original cover...

The original version of floods was done way back, long before Cowboys. He had taped the rain hitting the front walkway at his moms house and wrote the slow part and solo over it on his 4 track. I was very young and dumb and asked "how did you get that rain sound?",because it sounded so clear. I seriously thought he had used some stock recording. When he told me he had just stuck the mic out the atrium window by the front door,I felt so stupid.

For me,vulgar was the greatest. I had gotten an advanced copy on cassette from him during the end of the Cowboys tour(headlining clubs),and was blown away. When he first played walk for me,I didn't get it(I was/am into the up-tempo stuff). He kept saying "it's gonna be a monster live!" Damned if he wasn't right, yet again. I had not seen him in a couple of years(since power metal)and when I saw the red goatee I said "what the fuck is up with that?" And without missing a beat he said "it just grew in that way."

Yeah, you would have to be completely void of any guitar sense if you didn't appreciate the shit out of that album. It is a masterpiece one upped only really by Vulgar. Love the high vocals Phil could get on the old stuff though. He could wail before his voice burned out. (as is usually the case) Dime was the complete package as has been said. So proficient even loaded or fucking around. Always had such great precise technique.

I had finally got to meet Dime and Vinny at Numbers here in Houston I think it was 1 month before he was shot. That was when Damgeplan was touring. We waited by there bus after the show and got all of there autographs. I asked him a dumb question about what scales he uses and he was like "Man I don't use no damn scales"! My other friend asked them about Phil and Pantera and Vinny's response was " Man that shit wasn't us" or something like that. That was a bad ass show cause it was such a small venue. Voivod was with them and Jason Newsted came out into the crowd after his set. Good times man good times!!

He's got some killer riffs on the I am the Night album as well. I've been a fan since around 85'. DGTTM (Diamond Goes To The Movies) is a pretty cool little instrumental.

I was fortunate enough to see them on the C.F.H. tour at a small club in Chicago called "The Avalon." Before they struck a note, Phil said to the crowd, "We talked to security, and our stage is your stage, if you got the balls, c'mon up!" Well, the place went completely apeshit. At times, there were a dozen dudes up on the stage with them goin fucking crazy. If I remember correctly, Dime had two guitars, and the headstocks were snapped off both from the insanity. They were literally hanging by the lock nut. He laughed it off and finished the show on one of Wrathchild America's guitars. It was soooooo badass. That guy was a fucking animal and had absolute command over his instrument. People can say what they want about his tone, but when he played a few chords before they started up, your face slid right off like when Indiana Jones opened the Arc.  I agree that he was one of the baddest metal guitarists ever. RIP DBD

Thinking I had out grown this stuff I dusted off the first 3 CDs , man your never too old LOL , love this stuff. AS far as Dimes tone I think for Pantera it worked perfectly.

Definitely stands the test of time. I know a lot of you guys hate dimes tone, but those Randall century amps with a simple 10 band in the loop are one of the most brutal amps ever. No need to scoop out all the mids like he did. They just kill. Way better than all the current Randall garbage, I've tried them all. Mine will be buried with me. Lol
