I think that's hard to explain for some songwriters. I've written lyrics around riffs, and riffs around lyrics, so I think the answer really is "depends".

I think you have to ask questions about specific songs to get the answers you're looking for.

Van Halen would not have went anywhere without Diamond Dave. Let's suppose Gary Cherone was their original singer? Everyone wants to talk shit on Dave but he was the outrageous showman that VH needed to take them over the top.
