Where DLR talks writing songs with Eddie . Or even just interviews where Dave recalls what maybe he recalls during writing certain songs . Like on Joe Rogan there’s never any talk about his way he creates . I mean did they write together ? Or was it ALWAYS hers the sing I wrote Dave put something to it . And if that’s the case then how did write all those words and Melodie’s . Idk every interview I see he just says weird shit . I wish someone musical would interview him about every song in a book . I’d love to know more

I saw one not too long ago, may have been from one of DLR's shows. He said in the old days it would just be him and Ed, sitting in 2 chairs in Dave's Dad's basement. Working on songs and lyrics.

I always thought Eddie and Alex said they wrote and jammed together. Sounds like Eddie was integral to it all. I do wish there was more info on Dave’s side. I know a lot don’t like him, but I always loved his lyrics.

I think it would be cool to hear. I remember seeing this post by @mentoneman a while back that illustrates how much the producers added to the final version of Jamie's Cryin'. The main takeaway being that they had a good base but also a good team to push it to the next level and several iterations to do it due to paid-for studio time.

I think the producers and engineers add a lot, even if you only worked with them once you'd be a much better song writer after.

Which is fine. I kind of like that sound myself But I'm not under the illusion that the way to make it happen is to copy Ed's VH1 rig. Elements that reproduce the distortion and frequency response of those various missing studio elements are going to be required, and it's going to be an approximate result since the thing I'm duplicating never actually existed.

Ed presumably felt the same way, and went and bought a SLO.

put another way,
i have zero interest in acquiring vh bootleg tones or stuff past 1984 studio tones.

I mean I really think that’s obvious Dave and the Origiinal band was better . Completely origiinal . Nothing like ever . They just played and jammed and all 4 were insane at what they did . That being said Van Hagar has done great shit . I like ALOT of vh3 ( not all of it ) and the Gary tour was great .
But I’ll go back to my post . I’ve heard all the other guys talk about their creative process . Not Dave

DLR said on the radio one morning, years ago, here in Philly, that they would listen to AC/DC on their tour bus all the time (huge fans) and would play AC/DC songs backwards to come up with riffs and ideas.

When I think of the Ed and Dave songwriting dynamic, for some reason, I always think of Could This Be Magic or the intro to Take Your Whiskey Home. You just cannot beat that kind of creativity, and I get the feeling they spent just about no time coming up with those. There's not much in this world you can always rely on, but you know the first six VH albums will always make you happy. You'll always listen deeply, sing along, tap your foot, try to picture them playing that stuff, want to go home and grab a guitar, etc. You cannot listen to any of that stuff and ignore it.

The VH song writing process was literally Ed, mountains of blow and gallons of booze and Dave would sing whatever rhymed.

I love DLR, but he's not wired to give a straight answer. Always an ambiguous answer with a story within a story within yet another story.

Early on Dave and Ed wrote together, as time went on Ed would hand completed music to Dave and he would write to it by playing it in his car and driving around, one thing never mentioned is that they were heavily inspired by the first Queen record, Dave told me they would all sit around and listen to it heavily..sometimes Dave would hand Ed a song and say “write something like this” Both Dave and Alex told me that Mean Street was heavily inspired by ‘What is Hip’ from Tower of Power!

roth/vh begat the LA scene which birthed axl/slash. can’t think of another biggie after that.
