The Whetstone has yet to be dethroned. Blackout Effectors won with that one, even though it's huge and has too many features. It gets right where you want it, wherever the fuck that is.

The Don Juan Cornelius is really close. For me, the symmetry of the sweep on the Whetstone gave it the edge, where the DJC is a little more asymmetrical. The Whetstone has a switch for that if you want it, even if I don't.

The EHX Bad Stone really wowed me. I didn't realize I liked it that much until you hear it back to back. The attack knob is perfect on that, and the sweet spot really made it stand out. The other two were more luscious.

The MXR Deep Phase sounded great, but was easy to overdo the feedback. The Mode II switch brought a nice extra layer, which makes it unique. It's good, but it's not subtle.

The Gold Small Stone was nice. It was a little too subtle compared to everything else. With the color switch engaged, it got a little too washed out for my liking.

The MXR Phase 90 and the Whirlwind Orange Box are the same pedal, but miles apart. It would be more fair to compare the Orange Box to a Script Phase 90, but I don't have one (You gotta piss with the cock you got!). The Whirlwind was cleaner and more luscious. The Phase 90 has the least amount of headroom.

Boosted, the Phase 90 distorts. I love that. It's a neat trick. I refuse to call it bad. When I smacked the front of the rest of them, I got varied results. The Bad Stone barked a bit. The rest stayed mostly clean, just louder.

All in all, they each have a place, with the value of the Small Stone being that it's gold. I think I need more though. What do I get next?
I love Phasers though I tend to lean MXR for it's simplicity. The Whetstone would put me into overload with all the knobs lol. I may give the EHX Bad Stone another run through soon.

I currently have the Whirlwind, the EVH and a Script 90. The MXR Phase DNA runs through all of them but the Whirlwind would be the most unique. Also have the DOD Phaser and just let go of the Vahlbruch Phaser. As you said on the Whirlwind, more lush, love that thing. Just has a little extra going on.

That's why I love the Whetstone over all those. I tend to dial in the slow Phase 90 sound on all them, and the Whetstone (and the Don Juan Cornelius for that matter) just do it better. Trust me, I get the option paralysis thing. I fell out of favor with it because it got noisy as all shit. I was about to send it off to Wayno when he told me to tinker with the internal pot and rebias it. There was another fucking knob on the inside that I had to adjust to get it to act right! Way too many knobs and switches.

Blackout Effectors did make a smaller version called the Sibling though. I never checked it out. Might be worth a shot.

...or just wait for the Griffin Analog version.

I could use a light dusting ..... it's been years ...
I had thought about the Phase 90 for the whole 70's Albert King approach but I figured I would blaze my own pathway instead. I don't like reverb live (unless it's a standalone Fender tank which is a headache to gig) and the couple delays I had, like most reverb, seemed to wash out my pick attack too much. Plus any digital effects I try I always hear an added harshness to the highs under volume and gain.

@japetus had sent a cheap-o "falling star delay" to me (long story there) and I played with it one day and found I could get it to give me a very light doubling effect that made my single notes sound bigger, but not an obvious doubling effect. It was killer but the noise floor was insanely high so eventually I wound up with that Meridian, since it offers an all analog path with a low noise floor. A lot of money for a very subtle effect but hey, at the time I had bought your VBF pedal and the pultec (awesome) so that Meridian was the icing on the cake.

And what's crazy is back in the day 12 Space Rack, programmable effects units, midi switching systems etc... I dove head first into all that stuff and now I just get bogged down with to many knobs and programming. Granted my amp is a JVM so go figure lol.

Bezo ... I also do a heavily modded version of the Maestro MP-1

It should be called the Waynzone instead of the Whetstone.
The Waynestone?
Here's the modded Maestro MP-1 I use to do .... there's a red LED under clear epoxy for the head of the spliff .... it pulses along to the rate setting which is the Sativa knob

Haha that's killer looking! "I detect the odor of marijuana in your vehicle". "Yes sir, that's just the phaser on my pedalboard"

A true lover of the great phaser, a connoisseur.

My level of "subtle" is not far from half way through the controls. You can set it anywhere to a slight swoosh to straight syrup. It does vibrato and ring modulator settings too. It's pretty sweet.

The Blackout Effectors Whetstone is to phaser what the Zvex Fuzz Factory is to fuzz. There is no sound you can't get out of it, but you'll have to fuck with all the settings for days to get it there. Oh, and lord help you if you bump a knob (or a switch).
so Bezo ..... what exactly do you want me to do to the Whetstone ..... you want me to minimize down ??

what do you want to keep and what do you want to lose ?

I like it as a phaser, so all the non phaser settings can go. That's just me though. I haven't touched most of those switches in forever because I got mine where I want it and don't want to lose it. I don't remember what the vibrato or the ring mod settings even sound like.

working on it now .......
