Praise for the Peavey JSX

I'm setting close to the age where this live playing till 2 AM is too much for me too. One thing that keeps me going is we have 2 younger guys in the band that haul the heavy stuff. And we only play out twice a month or so. As far as security-I live and play in a pretty laid back area and anybody stupid enough to try and rip off a beloved band at a biker bar here is putting their life at risk. We've got built in security!

I know this is an old thread, but I just bought another JSX, which makes this the 4th time I've owned one! Everyone has opinions, and as far as mine, it's probably in my top 3 favorite amps on the planet. I keep going back!

I also had a XXX II and didnt like it .. Is that amp definately exactly the same as a JSX ?

Well I talked to a tech at Peavey before buying one because I was torn between the JSX and the actual Triple XXX and he told me the Triple XXX II was a JSX with a slightly tweaked circuit. He said really all they did was tweak the voicing ever so slightly to give it more upper mids. I went with it and fought it for two years.

Man I hated that amp (Triple XXX II), it sounded like utter shit. Harsh, honky and fizzy IMO.

I've owned 2 Triple XXX's, a Triple XXX II, and 3 JSX's. Harsh, honky and fizzy isn't how I'd describe any of them. Good tubes are a must, firstly, speakers and guitar/pickups make the differences, (as with any amp, for that matter). With all the above, I found big, bold and crushing to be my experiences. The EQ is touchy, I'll agree, but I found good tones pretty quick. They're certainly love/hate it seems, but I believe in a lot of cases, it's user error when somebody "hates" it. I've owned everything from Mesa to Marshall to 5150's, to Soldano to Engl to Randall. The JSX is a favorite of mine!

Triple XXX=completely different amp as you know and as for the JSX, well maybe the Triple XXX II is indeed considerably different from the JSX I don't know outside what the Peavey tech told me as I've never played a JSX. He claimed there were only minor tweaks.

No user error hear my friend. Was completely familiar with the Triple XXX II's active eq, and it's wasn't like I tried it for a month or two and gave up. I owned that amp for two years and tried various speakers, cabs, guitars, pickups, power tubes, preamp tubes, boosts, and played it with an mxr 10-band in the loop. For me and my ears it was a horrible sounding amp. Every amp I've owned and played from Engl, EVH, Peavey, Egnator, Marshall, and Diezel, has sounded infinitely better than the Triple XXX II. But the former is of course just my taste and opinion.

Thread resurrection reminded me that I've since moved on to the next phase in my guitar playing career and I'm selling the JSX. If anybody is interested, it's been professionally serviced and retubed with el34's. I also ordered and replaced the missing Butcher knife faceplates and a couple of knobs that were missing. Also, I ordered a new footswitch cable for it. $400+shipping from central Florida...

That's what the classified section is for.

I had a peavey JSX a few years back that I modified with some help and suggestions from a highly regarded amp builder on here. that thing as an absolute beast of an amp. got into a financial crunch and let it go, but have missed it since. I actually found the schematics and changes when cleaning a while back, and have been considering finding another to build. my JSX was powered with 6550 power tubes, and sounded insane

Mine's has had a slight tweak done to the Crunch Channel. (Gain pot switched to 1 Meg.) I love this amp now.
