Praise for the Peavey JSX

I used to gig with one of those and TC Electronic Nova System and got a great tone. I used to play thru a Genz-Benz G-Flex 2x12 but a nice 4x12 would have been better. If I would have kept it, I imagine I would have liked EL34s in it.

An MXR six band EQ boosting the lower frequencies would work nice with that.

The amp's got plenty of low end if I want it. I've found that playing out with my band I need to roll back the low end to make the overall mix less muddy. And I've got plenty of EQ options in the GT-10 processor if I need to do so. Also remember the JSX has an active EQ. I'm running the Bass on 4, Mids on 3.5 and treble on 6-7 on the crunch channel. Bass on 4, mids on 5 and treble on 6-7 on the Ultra channel. I do have a patch on the GT with a parametric mid hump around 800hz and a HPF at about 100hz for that 80's Hair metal HONK ala Stryper. My band has a pretty big PA system and the Bass & drums move some air so if I have too much low end in the guitar rig the bottom end can get pretty overwhelming.

I only played one briefly several years back when they first came out.
My local music store had one. The Manager who was a buddy of mine did run the Graphic EQ in the loop.
That amp was sounding killer.

Muddy low end is classic Peavey. They just never figured out the tone stack/speaker combo like Marshall.

-the bias is too cold, that's why it does that-

So a Hot bias makes for a tight low end eh ...

Cold bias must create a harsh top end cuz thats all i heard in that recording.

Needs to be more Brown Sound.

JSX, ugh.

HATE the active EQ at least the clean is passive, run pedals into it.

hate that the loop knob neuters the tone.

hate the cocked wah voicing.

just couldnt gel with this peavey.

Never played the JSX, but owned the Triple XXX 2 which was supposed to just be a re-badged JSX. I hated that amp like no other! Tried to get on with it for two years but finally dumped it. Tried swapping tubes like crazy to tame the mids and highs. I couldn't stand the mids, the Highs and the active eq.

Wow, you couldn't be more wrong. My Peavey rig is absolutely crushing. You couldn't make it muddy if you tried.
I've played plenty of Marshalls that gave in as soon as they got cranked up. Do I love Marshalls? Yup. But they ain't perfect. The 6505+ is pretty close.

I rocked the first XXX for a couple of years. Stock, it wasn't all that, but I did some research at the time when I needed to replace the tubes. A couple of people were saying the JJ E34L tubes were like secret sauce in the XXX. I had to upgrade the amp's resistors as well but it ended up making a huge difference.

Hey, I'd like to hear some reference clips from the haters just to have a reference. This by no means a competition, but I'd like to see how close I can get to your grail tone. And I'm not going for a Djent sound. Don't know if Moltenmetalburn, MetalheadMike and Badronald and I are on the same page, but Chester Nimitz, let's hear a clip!
Remember, my recording was nothing fancy, I just stuck a Beta 58 on the grill and played. No DAW processing. Let's keep it fair.
I want to do this kuz I'm an amp tweaker and if I hear a sound I like, I like to mod the circuit to try to get there.

I can tell Mike u don't allow others to have opinions when they dont agree with you but here you go, slam away.

BTW IDK if u know this but Satch played the JSX on the clean channel with his Satcherator boost pedal.

I don't get much out of soundcloud recordings as they can make rubber bands sound good, point & shoot recorders capture "in the room" better cuz that what you here live anyway.

The JSX is about a 20 year old design & Satriani wasn't happy with Peavey thats why he went back to Marshall.

The XXX amp was suppose to be Lynch's amp but he wasn't happy with Peavey either.

I have no repect for Hartly Peavey, he's a money hungry CEO that screws over his own employees and releases sig gear without the endorsee's endorsement IE: 6505/5150, HP Special/Wolfgang, XXX ect.

Peavey is everything wrong with American Manufacturers and will never get any of my dough.

Hey Chester, this isn't a competition. I just want to hear what others think sounds good so I can use it as a reference...all in the spirit of sharing, y'know? The only reason I might have thought those other guys might not apply is that the XXX/6505 crowd generally goes for a more modern sound and that's not what I'm after.
Your cheeseblock fuzz clip is exempt because he's playing thru the low gain input and using a fuzz pedal, 2 choruses, EQ pedal Delay pedal, 2 amps in stereo.....I can't even hear an amp!
Is the JMP files clip straight in?
Is the Friedman Brootz clip straight in?

I use the TC Chorus/Flange on the pitch modulator with a mild sweep, The JMP file clip was in stereo, the BrOOtalz clip was just the ZW-44 Zakk boost.

I run a wet/dry now with the two 100 watt Marshalls, the JMP is dry, time based & modulation thru the DSL with EQ, Boosts & gate into the tripler into 3 amps.

I only use the clean channel on the SS Fender with the clean on the DSL for clean stuff.

Im all about supporting members here as we all have different tastes but i have learned much in 11 years on forums trying different gear/stuff.

I just saw a Don Felder rig rundown this week where he runs his delays last in his loop chain and i had my Phase 90 between my Carbon Copy delay & TC reverb, they were out of phase [who knew?]

I had no idea after 35 years of playing time based & modulation could be out of phase.

There is a noticeable difference after the swap. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

OK, we're coming from 2 different places on this. My JSX rig is for live playing so I can't really haul around a WDW rig with a big pedalboard. Anyway, my clip was just to show what the barebones amp sounds like. I think it's very versatile and usable for a $300 Craigslist score.

It sounds great !

And i can't haul my shit either ...lol.

Rap & Blews are the dominate generes here in town and Pink Floyd tributes.

Not to mention there are serious band gear robberies here in town, almost every act that comes here get their gear stolen.

My days of 3am loadouts are a thing of the past unless i have good $$$ compensation & armed security.
