Prince dead!

Finally someone comes out and says it... There was even an article the other day that said he made Hendrix look like an amateur. what?? Hendrix? Maybe had Prince written more guitar driven music there would be a basis of comparison but to me he was an eccentric artist who was talented across the board and a great performer. Definitely an artist and to be remembered but let's take our foot off the gas on the adoration because nobody was talking about Prince this last decade until he broke someone's guitar on late night tv. Hendrix though.... Come on, he is the grandfather of experimentation and pedals and gear.... He also wrote killer hooks and had amazing vocals. His band was sick too. I think even Prince would say he ain't no Hendrix.... Not even close.

I don't think Prince was an awesome guitarist, and I'm SURE there are guys on this forum that are technically WAY MORE accomplished players, but that's only one small piece of the puzzle, isn't it ? Prince could write, sing, play multiple instruments, produce other acts (and himself), basically do it all...AND he was a really good guitar player. Great ? I've seen some live stuff I thought was REALLY good...Vai good ? No, never. Malmsteen good ? Again, no. But I don't think that was Prince's aim either. The world isn't as good a place without him as it was with him, that's how I judge it. My .02...
Well said.

I'm surprised how many members of this forum venerate Prince. I don't know a lot about him, but have been around long enough to be familiar with his legacy and some of his music. The only two songs I remember clearly are Purple Rain and When Doves Cry, but only because of the movie (Apelonia) and MTV constantly playing it. I've heard him playing solos, etc..., but I've honestly heard better club guiarists. There are far more talented guitarists on this forum, in my opinion, yet somehow Prince commands nearly as much respect in the USA as Jimmy Page.

Not to speak negatively of him, but when I first heard he died, it seemed like his death made more of an impact than his music career. The pervasive liberalism of white Americans has given them a tendency to extol black celebrities and athletes, and the media has a zealous approach to representing black people. It seems that this fact lends substantially to the impact of his death. Moreover, his eccentric metrosexual personality compounds his praise in this day and age when the acceptance of deviant sexuality is preceipitated on American society; despite himself apparently bein averse to homosexuality.

Though Prince seems to be lauded on forums like this, I doubt (in all honesty) that 99% of the people positively commenting have blown the dust off of their digitally remastered Prince's Greatest Hits CD in 20 years. I've always been under the impression that the general public is swayed and influenced by popular opinion and the media, and therefore generally have pathetic taste in music compared to people who listen and appraise music solely on their own music preference and knowledge.

Take away the popularity and adulation, and you have another lavish celebrity dead from a drug overdose in an age where recreational drug use has become a huge epidemic for young Americans. Unfortunately, this enormous problem has been successfully repressed by the mainstream media which colludes with the current presidential administration. Together with the boom of deviant television media and even cable channels dedicated to pot smoking, Americans haven't been hit with the realities of the current drug epedemic.

Rather than looking at things for what they are, we have adopted an idealistic approach to celebrity deaths. Now these popular tragedies come and go and people don't realize that they're just a symptom of of a prevalent national problem. Much like the gun debate, where the sheeple are turned against guns rather than the mental illness and extreme ideologies which source the crimes, we casually cast aside reality for a fluffy little idea of what happens.

I'm sorry to diverge from popular opinion, but I have a tendency to see things for what they are. What I remember about Michael Jackson is dangling a baby from the balcony, buying a dead body, and little boys in his bed. I remember Whitney Houston making ten lifetimes of wealth from a song done better by Dolly Pardon many, many years earlier. I remember Prince as a commercial artist with mediocre talent made popular by his eccentricity, ethnicity, and the politics of the time, yet hasn't been relevant for a very long time.

Shew. Harsh. Direct. There is some truth sprinkled throughout that shit though. I think you and I might drink the same flavor of haterade! I respect prince for his creativity and obvious talent, but that's about it. I hate to see the world lose people who push boundaries and show massive talent and work ethic at what they do, and dedicate their lives to something. I hated to see David Bowie die for the same reasons, and I'm not a huge fan of most his music either. I just hate to see people die that have given great gifts to the world, even if they are flawed people like, or even worse than, the rest of us. There are just so many complete TURDS out there that could die instead. Unfortunately, the turds seem to live forever.

No hate or harshness. I don't hate the guy. In fact, I thought he was OK all-around and wish very much that he would have died from natural causes instead of drugs (or whatever the latest reports suggest). Unfortunately, but predictably, the so-called "hip-hop community" and mainstream media rushed out and embraced him as if they had some kind of rights to his legacy. The truth is, although Prince was African-American, he didn't get caught up in a lot of the garbage the mainstream involves themselves in these days. In fact, even though he wasn't political, he seemed to lean towards the Republican side. That's something I consider very respectable from someone of his ethnic background because it shows that he was his own man and didn't do things as many people expected of him. He was fairly blunt in his opinion about the gay rights issue which didn't bode well, but as the mainstream likes to do, ignores it all now and embraces him as their lost son. I'd have to say that I have a higher degree of respect for Prince than anyone else in the mainstream. I would have liked to see him die clean and ride off into the sunset.

You sound really white,as well as deluded, racist ,right wing, homophobic, and a Brainwashed born again Christian totally disconnected from black culture.

"Prince's albums discography consists of thirty-nine studio albums, five soundtrack albums, four live albums, five compilation albums, seventeen video albums, and twelve extended plays"
You may not have followed his career nor kept up on what he was doing but that doesn't mean other people weren't following closely worldwide.

" He has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He won seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award for the film Purple Rain"

I'm sorry what were you saying?
Speak upon not which you are clueless

Prince is a modern soul artist, one who continued the legacy of incredible African American artists such as Curtis Mayfield,Isaac Hayes,Marvin Gaye,George Clinton.Funkadelic/P-Funk and many others.
Aside from being a multi instrumentalist he was also an engineer,a full fledged producer for himself and other artists, song writer, choreographer, fashion designer, set, lightning and stage designer, studio owner, multi media mogul and video/film producer actor, not to mention he beat Warner Brothers and regained control of his catalouge.

How he died is really none of anyone's business but his family's.
You want to point a finger at prescription drug overdose's?
Start with the wall street driven bought and paid for by lobbyist's pharmaceutical industry which is responsible for a death every 18 minutes in this country.

As if the pestiferous prolixity of your rant wasn't enough, you even managed to throw in some Bernie Sanders type balderash. I don't know why you thought it was necessary to explicate your Wikipedia info of Prince. Evidently, the majority of those aspersions apply to you as you seem to postulate with an ingrained presumptuousness. I would have forgiven your igorance given that you are unaware that I am an expert in cultural theory and have the credentials to back it up, but considering how derogatory you were at the outset, I can only advise you to learn how to read more carefully, thoughtfully, and acquire a lucid comprehension before you post a response to someone. It seems that you have no interest whatsoever in an rational, intelligent discussion. You are reactionary, eagerly take offense, and have an alacrity to display your political ideology. Therefore, I advise that you refrain from engaging in discussions you are not equipped to comprehend so that you don't stumble into another contemptuous rant again.

Woah, hold on there. You exhibit far too much razor sharp precision of the English language for the internet. Don't you know it's racist these days. And don't even think about correcting someone on their foul use of the language. It only shows your elitist leanings and sore lack of cultural sensibility.
Carry on.

Why don't we just settle this by watching yet another Purple Rain cover by someone on YouTube paying homage to " the master". Remember the days when Prince became relevant again because it allowed me to do a YouTube cover that got me over 20,000 views??!! Completely unrelated, I was watching Prince jam a bass solo the other day and he had some pretty kicking bass funk technique going on. Didn't like his music and think he was a bit of an egotistical prick but like Malmsteen, I will give him props. I guess you either got him and liked what he did or you didn't and were more interested in guys dressed like girls with big hair playing crazy leads drenched in delay. Not sure where the racist remarks came in either.... We were talking mainly about his catalogue. Just because you are a prolific writer doesn't mean you write nothing but hits. The high falsetto bullshit really turned me off.

Carry on.

No offense to you, but SavageRiffer's last bit of writing looks more like someone with average writing skills put down some sentences, then randomly replaced words with the most complex ones they could find in their online thesaurus... The purpose of writing is to communicate, not confuse with obtuse language...

I'm not commenting on the actual argument here as frankly, I don't care...

Yeah! He's gone un confused us regulOr folk with laayer speek n' such.

I still didn't read anything racist in his remarks though. People love stirring the pot on RT. It is what makes it the place we love.

I'm sorry to diverge from popular opinion, but I have a tendency to see things for what they are.

My punctuation and grammar are fine thanks, but nice try. If I wanted to take apart your grammar and spelling, believe me, I could, but that wasn't the purpose of my comment. I didn't make my point to make fun of you...

My criticism was about your using "big" words for the sake of using them instead of communicating, which is what writing is all about. If you can't grasp that, I don't know what to tell ya, but you and I both know that the average person reading this board has no idea what "pestiferous prolixity" is and the use of phrases like that are meant to talk down or to try to impress others with your vast intelligence... I hope that clear things up for you! Carry on...

"Though Prince seems to be lauded on forums like this, I doubt (in all honesty) that 99% of the people positively commenting have blown the dust off of their digitally remastered Prince's Greatest Hits CD in 20 years. I've always been under the impression that the general public is swayed and influenced by popular opinion and the media, and therefore generally have pathetic taste in music compared to people who listen and appraise music solely on their own music preference and knowledge"

Assuming everyone on the forum swallows what is spoon fed to them from the mass media is erroneous at best and contemptible.

So everyone should be like......you?
You win the prize-This is some of the most close minded lame ass racist garbage I have read on rig-talk

"The pervasive liberalism of white Americans has given them a tendency to extol black celebrities and athletes, and the media has a zealous approach to representing black people. It seems that this fact lends substantially to the impact of his death. Moreover, his eccentric metrosexual personality compounds his praise in this day and age when the acceptance of deviant sexuality is preceipitated on American society; despite himself apparently bein averse to homosexuality."

What about the so called pain management Doctor's over prescribing opiates?

I advise you to consider your own nasty, baleful remarks before trying to judge someone else. What I posted was civil, informed, and articulate as opposed to your scornful rambling. Let's take a look at some of the insults, accusations, and assumptions you cast:

"really white"
"deluded"
"racist"
"right wing"
"homophobic"
"Brainwashed"
"born again Christian"
"totally disconnected from black culture."
"Speak upon not which you are clueless"
"erroneous at best and contemptible."

Carry on.
"razor sharp precision of the English language"?

No offense to you, but SavageRiffer's last bit of writing looks more like someone with average writing skills put down some sentences, then randomly replaced words with the most complex ones they could find in their online thesaurus... The purpose of writing is to communicate, not confuse with obtuse language...

I'm not commenting on the actual argument here as frankly, I don't care...

Steve

I had to quote this since your use of punctuation and grammar doesn't exactly lend you much credibility. Hmmf, with what qualifications do you think you can judge the average writer? Moreover, isn't the actual discussion the point rather than making a feeble attempt to diminish someone's writing? Since you don't care about the discussion at hand, then it must be that you went out of your way to criticize my writing. Considering that you think those words were "the most complex" and were "confused" by the language, it's probably not a good idea for you to go around criticizing somone's writing.
I never said I was confused actually, but if I was, I'm sure many others would be as well, so you are just making my point for me.

In reality, they just make you look silly...

I hope that clear things up for you! Carry on...

Steve

Steve......So you are saying that because he used big words that he's an ass and should be embarrassed?
I ain't no genius, but I sure doesn't like the modern day saleabration of mediocrity.
Just sayin!
That isn't what I'm saying at all. I think I've explained my point pretty clearly...

Steve

controlled_voltage wins the award for the most "whiney bitch" post of the week...congrats! :jerkit:

I think that the original posts from Savage and Kapo were spot on for the most part. They spoke what they felt, gave their honest critique and got slammed on it.

Why? I totally agree with both posts by them. And on the topic of Prince wasn't all that and there are tons better.. you could probably say that about half the artists past and present.
