Hope I don't get slammed for this... I've heard his name before but HONESTLY had never heard his playing or anything like that... had no idea what to expect from the video... if you played that for me without me watching the video and me just listening I would have genuinely thought it was a guy with a few good tricks that hadn't been playing long playing absolutely mindless incoherent garbage all over the fretboard because he had no idea what he was doing...

I absolutely hated that... to each his own I suppose...I respect the talent because hell, I couldn't play that... but I sure as hell wouldn't want to either...

So let me get this straight. Now Blackmore is a talentless incoherent hack?
The world is truly upside down.

I love Blackmore's style. Very creative and you never quite knew what you might get which is cool in rock guitar. I thought he was notorious for making up some of his own scales?

RB paints a musical picture with every note... A true musical artist.

I dont post much but I notice a trend...

Make a post asking a certain question, get advice not in relation to the question, but about how you shouldnt be listening to this or that and should be doing your own thing.

Blackmore plays this live NOTHING like the recorded version (which someone up there mentioned as well).

The end of the video you get to see a bit of improv on vocals as well. Kind of freaking awesome.

Thanks for posting the video of this, it's epic..I wore the tape out back in the day..think the audio release was 11 minutes or so (from memory) though.

Hated it.

lol, so I am not the only one then.

Heh, I was going to say it's just bad phrasing. I'm with you guys. Personally never been a big fan of RB.

The original or this guys go at it?

Actually I thought this guys playing was very clean. Didn't change the fact that I didn't like the colors used in this solo or the original. But execution-wise I thought this guy was great.

To Rip on Blackmore is like Rippin'
on Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Tony Iommi
Eric Clapton. These guy's may not be
as Technically Proficient as Guthrie Govan,
Vai or Gilbert but they are the "ORIGINAL"
Guitar God's!!! If not for Blackmore, we wouldn't
have the likes of Yngwie or Doug Aldrich.
Ritchie's style is hard to cop, he just has
too much of his own thing going on....
My Hat is Off to the Original "GOD'S OF GUITAR"

Yep RB play a unique expressive style. I was fortunate to have seen him play live in Deep Purple and Rainbow. I think Steve Morse plays RB better than RB does the several times I have seen the current version of Deep Purple. RB is truly a very expressive player so what if he doesn't know what he is doing. It works for him and has sold millions of albums so far I have sold none. LMAO Love his tone

So so true. Too bad the youngsters dont see it this way. To have the balls to say you dont like the "colors" or the "phrasing" in a Blackmore solo is laughable.

RB improvises quite a bit like Hendrix and others live. Probably sick of playing the same freaking song a thousand times the same way again and again with the same technique. Most of the time you can tell RB is stretching the limits of the composition.

Pick up remastered Made in Japan and a few of the other concert dates during that tour and he is smoking.

He has a few interviews where he mentioned some of his licks are based on classical motifs that were re-organized in a way.

Forgot to mention the Sydney Concert in 84, he plays this solo using slide or a version of it.

"absolutely mindless incoherent garbage all over the fretboard because he had no idea what he was doing" ...

Congratulations, you've just publicly admitted your lack of musical knowledge and unawareness of RB's body of work since the late 60's. Unlike Jeff Beck, Clapton..who i love, Ritchie was indeed VERY knowledgable in musical theory and was the number 1 session cat in England at the ripe age of 16..playing everything from bebop, rockabilly, country, classical, blues.

kids..

Thats such a badass solo I cant imagine anyone not liking that. His phrasing is so his own.

Blackmore is the f'n shit. This solo is genius. The guy playing the cover knows the notes, but certainly isn't playing it remotely like Ritchie does. That's all there is to it...

If Ritchie was number 1, Jimmy was certainly number 2... but I'd argue to reverse that.

Both mind boggling creative guitarists/musicians...
