Rant: Mandatory use of provided backlines.

In a battle of the bands sitch I could see how they might want to level the playing field, how can you do 'battle' without your weapons??
Some guys cultivate their tone as much as their technique and that 'comfort factor' playing on your gear, your able to pull 100% of your best stuff from has got to be better than playing at 80% on someone elses burnt out rental crap.
Maybe if enuff bands refuse to play places like this the trend will change... forcing someone to endure strange and crummy gear cause the sound guys too fkn busy to soundck. everyone? what kinda shit is that?

Seriously H, why do you think the majority of backline is Fender or Marshall stuff with the occassional Recto? Because that's what rental places have. So, the idea of one cultivating their tone is all nice and good when you cart your own gear to the gig, but what happens when you start doing shit outside of an hour drive time? Or fly gigs...you cultivate your shit so you can make it happen no matter what.

And Ed is right about BoBs.....consider yourself lucky you got advance notice and didn't walk into a situation with having no pedals and a JC120 as your backline amp.

Sorry guys, but this is a great opportunity and not your typical "battle of the bands" to win 2 hours of studio time. Ours is one of 12 bands hand selected by one of the only rock stations left in the NY/NJ area to compete to open for a legendary band at 15,000 seat amphitheater in August. This is not something you walk away from due to tone snobbery. I was just looking for advice on how to best use the gear they're providing.

Well, this is just even more motivation to develop a "fly-gig" pedalboard.

Not that I'm *flying* anywhere... but having a pedalboard ready so I can plug into any amp and still sound decent.

Lets see. So far: Korg Pitchbloack > OCD > need a distortion pedal > RC-Booster for solos.

That'll do it for me. Just gotta find a distortion pedal.

Sorry guys, but this is a great opportunity and not your typical "battle of the bands" to win 2 hours of studio time. As I said, learn to deal with a a clean amp. This way it won't matter, you bring the pedals and you'll be good. And all you'll really need is an OD or 2 and maybe a dealy after the OD, and you'll make make it through just fine.

And yes I can completely relate, my Country band did one of those things where the grand price is 100K. And we have two more competitions before it's done. It was a walk on plug the M13 into a Twin and be done for me.

Talk to the sleaze bag promoter and slip him a extra 20 or 40 bucks to let you put your amp in the backline and remove it when your done.

Yeah, its so true that I need to have a small pedal based rig that gets the job done so like you said, I can walk up to a clean amp and it'll work out. Its just that up until now, this really hasnt been an issue because we havent been playing places that demand we use their backlines. Thanks for the advice.

This is not a bad idea! Except then I have to let the other bands use (and potentially abuse) my rig.

No you dont just tell the guy to pull your rig after you use it and if anyone has a problem with that to talk to the promoter.

Promoters can be your friends for the right price.
