Recreating the Mick Mars/Mötley Crüe guitar tone with the Friedman JOSE

I'm actually loading the IR in the DAW, I like doing it this way for tweaking cabs/mic positions in post while referencing the original tracks (for an unhealthy amount of time)🤣
Oh ok. I think it was actually your previous Jose video that I read that about the axe-fx. Seemed strange. Whatever you are doing, it doesn’t matter anyway, it’s clearly working.

Question while watching the Mars one. Do you play it with the reverb, etc sounding like the album? Or do you add that later. While watching I was wondering if you did the former how much it would affect your playing.

That's all added later, I've tracked the amp dry and then experimented with the various fx levels in post. It's definitely less fun but it helps me to play as tight as I possibly can!

Yeah that's essentially the tone right there. I also like how you didn't overgain it. Very often Mick's tones sound so good because the rythm guitar is not oversaturated in gain. Sounds fantastic.

Nailed it
But you have gotten impressive tones out of every demo i have seen you do (killer stuff on the AX8 as well)

Yes that would work too, I believe that's what Bob Rock did on the black album. Mesa for the bulk of the sound and the Jose for the high mid punch. The great thing about this amp being tight in the lows is that once you add the bass and drums it pratically mixes itself in without even having to apply an high pass eq on it.
One of the amps used in Dr feelgood was called a Garnet . Sounded shitty alone but with the Jose it sounded great Bob said

Stellar as always Rocco!!!

My Jose is the amp I always wanted. Just perfection! Wait and 2nd channel would be rad or 3 like the BE! someday I'll e mail Dave to see if that's possible

Dave had Micks Dr Feelgood jose for a while. Wonder how much of that amp he incorporated into his jose?

Dave mentioned it had the .68uf presence cap being a '73 Marshall, and it also didn't have any clipping diodes, so that would be the center position on the gain style switch on the Jose. Any other difference in tone is due to pots value and components tolerance which is just inevitable, but I think it can get very close to Mick's all things considered. That's also why I don't think it really makes sense for them to do a "Mick Mars Jose" Friedman head like they were originally planning to do.

Thanks man, I agree 100%. Tuning to D standard helps a lot in making things sound heavy without relying too much on gain. The mid position of the gain style switch on the Jose is the lowest gain setting (aside from the Plex mode), so you really have to dig in with the pick in order to get the aggression out but the extra work definitely pays off, it's not as compressed as the clipping diodes modes and stands out better in a mix.

Thanks dude, it's such a killer amp isn't it?! Those changes would make it the perfect amp for live use no doubt, but I do feel like it cleans up exceptionally well with the volume knob so I don't know if I'm really missing not having a clean channel. Adding an eq pedal or something like a micro amp in the loop would take care of the extra volume needed for solos. One of the reason it sounds the way it sounds is that is still essentially a single channel amp, so I'm afraid once you start adding multiple channels etc it would kinda lose some of the magic

Dave needs to release this Jose in pedal format but I know he has repeatedly said no to this.

@Rocco, do you feel like you use the n. presence much, because most people use the vintage due to being more aggressive? And do you feel like there's lots of useful tone options to switch between with the gain styles? One reason why I am so interested in this amp is because it gives me the impression that I wouldn't get bored of it with all the different options. I do find myself wishing the BE50 had some more "flavors" to play with on the high gain modes. Mostly the response knob is the main tool to change the tone.

It has been a long time since I actually wanted a new amp. I've been debating axing my BE100DLX or SLO 100 for one of these

Thanks man. Yeah, when I turn the gain way up on my BE, it does sound fairly close to what I hear in the Jose. Obviously, missing some of the highs and the bite, but I get the impression they both have the Friedman thing.
I think Dave said the Jose is less compressed and more open than the BE. I think I can hear that in the demos.
