Recreating the Mick Mars/Mötley Crüe guitar tone with the Friedman JOSE

@Rocco, do you feel like you use the n. presence much, because most people use the vintage due to being more aggressive? And do you feel like there's lots of useful tone options to switch between with the gain styles? One reason why I am so interested in this amp is because it gives me the impression that I wouldn't get bored of it with all the different options. I do find myself wishing the BE50 had some more "flavors" to play with on the high gain modes. Mostly the response knob is the main tool to change the tone.
I'm only using the newer presence when playing in the "3-in-1 mod" mode, so with the gain style switch in the center position.
In the clipping diodes modes (left and right on the gain style switch) the vintage presence works way better, the newer one makes things sound too bloated in the mids when you're in these modes. I feel like the BE50 and BE100dlx still offer a more diverse tonal palette overall, but if we're just talking about the high gain side yeah, the various switching combinations definitely help you getting different flavors!

This might be a stupid question, but given that I have no experience with the Friedman plex amps or Jose plex channel, I'm curious does it work beautifully with a Boss SD1? I used to use an SD1 with my DSL100 and it worked beautifully on the green plexi channel.

It will definitely work, but keep in mind the front end of the Jose is pretty tight already. I feel like the SD1 works best in front of a JCM800 or similar amps, where the low end tends to be a bit loose. The whole concept of the Jose mods was to get the boosted/cranked sound of a plexi without having to boost it so I really feel like you don't need to put anything in the front

This is very helpful, thanks. It's one of the first things I noticed about the BE50 is that my SD1 sounded weird when using the BE and HBE channels. It's like there's too much tightness in the signal, if you don't turn down the pres and treble when using a boost. Fortunately, I don't really use a boost with the BE50. With the Plex channels though, I was curious.

Thanks dude, it's such a killer amp isn't it?! Those changes would make it the perfect amp for live use no doubt, but I do feel like it cleans up exceptionally well with the volume knob so I don't know if I'm really missing not having a clean channel. Adding an eq pedal or something like a micro amp in the loop would take care of the extra volume needed for solos. One of the reason it sounds the way it sounds is that is still essentially a single channel amp, so I'm afraid once you start adding multiple channels etc it would kinda lose some of the magic
True, I run a Fractal FM3 in the 4 cable method so I can have one boost with scene 1 and then a different boost and delay with more gain/volume and longer trails for solos, then a 3rd scene with my EVH phaser with the same signal path as the solos scene!

It has been a long time since I actually wanted a new amp. I've been debating axing my BE100DLX or SLO 100 for one of these
You will not regret is, more articulate than both and real mids compared to the compressed BE with the perfect gain structure.

This is pretty much where I am, too... first amp that's really interested me in a LONG time (thanks, Rocco! 😉)

Anyone have any experience with the Jose vs a Helios? I'm thinking that they are different enough to justify both but would love to hear some opinions with firsthand experience.

I've got a BE100DLX, Helios, and enough Marshalls to scratch that itch... this Jose seems to be exactly the amp that I lusted over years ago.

Well, now I've done it... my number on the waiting list came up and now I've got one inbound. @RoccoPezzin I got on the waiting list after your first video and your second just solidified my desire to own one. You really should be getting a commission... Now comes the hard part... waiting...

Congrats dude, you won't regret it! Make sure you take some time to learn how all the switches work, as general tips here's what I've found:

- Keep Volume 1 from 8 to 10
- Volume 2 off, unless you want to dial in a
clean sound or want a bit more body.
- In Drive mode, with the Gain Style switch in the center the N. Presence sounds better to my ears.
- V. Presence sounds best when the Gain Style switch is either on the left or right.
- The bass knob on mine lives between 7 and 10 pretty much all the time.

Thank you so much for this! That's gonna be my quick start guide.

The first video you made with the Jose is going to serve as a master class. You really did a great job showing all the different sounds available and all the settings you used. I'm planning on going through all those and see where they lead me. Have a feeling I'll be spending a lot of time with this one... really looking forward to it!

Thanks again!! Both of these vids are just amazing!

Just for reference...

Just got mine, haven't had a chance to play it, yet. Any suggestions for cabs? Thinking Greenbacks to start, but open to suggestions.
