Relics are for Posers?

Hi, my name is Darrell and I am a cunt prick poseur. My question; Why does anybody give a rats ass?

I'd buy an old guitar that was worn, but not so much for a new guitar that was beat looking. That's my personal opinion, I think it's nuts to pay someone to put wear/damage on guitars, but if someone wants to do it I don't care, doesn't hurt or help me either way, so why not?

Some of you guys are going to DefCon 4 just because people don't like something you do. Relax and play your guitars, Francis!

I am still waiting for someone to buy my guitars for me. Then, someone else other than me can have a fucking opinion of what I choose to play.

"a relic guitar is a prop rather than an instrument".. I read that once

personally, I would rather not have my guitar get fucked up, i love them and they are mine and I rub them and pet them and hug them

now sure, go buy a relic'd guitar and you look like a dumb hobo that can't afford nice things, I am all for looking like hobos if the chicks are into it

I'm the ultimate poseur. A lot of my gear was trashed and worn by someone else. Real relics, but I didn't put in any of the time and work for it. But broken headstocks and missing tolex definitely add mojo as long as I didn't do it...

It's popular to be a bad ass while putting the wear and tear on your guitar noodling to Nickelback in your basement. Get with the program buddy....... :D

This..poseurs back in the 80's were the guys who had the full Marshall stack, 2 or 3 nice guitars, long hair and the outfits..but couldn't play for shit. But they got into bands because they looked the part, even though they could barely play bar chords.

Growing up in the 80's this was exactly what I was thinking when I read Steve's post.

Funny how some love typing their opinions but when they read something they don't agree with they turn around and say you shouldn't have any opinion interesting double standard.

I like new looking guitars, i like relics too, I buy my guitars with my money and if you dont like it then you opinion doesnt really matter to me. I played one of my les pauls for over 10 yrs and it never looked reliced, i never babied it and i used to play it live. I could have played it for another 10 yrs but who wants to wait 20 yrs for a guitar to be aged. I wanted a relic look because i liked it and i can still add my own battle scars and marks on it over the years. Its only a guitar, its not worth making a big deal about. Theres millions of them out there and if you dont like relics then buy new looking guitars and stop trying to insult people who doesnt wanna wait 20 of 30 yrs to aged it themself.

I think some of you guys worry too much about what others will think of you, seems like theres always complaints about playing a sig model or a relic. Lifes too short to worry about that stuff, If you like relics or a sig model of your favorite player then go for it. Who cares what some guys on a forum think of what you like or play. It doesnt matter as long as your happy. Play your relics and have fun. It doesnt matter if somebody on rigtalk thinks its lame. Maybe some dudes are insecure about what they play because they are trying to fit in with a certain crowd or might be looking for respect because they can say they made every ding or dent.
Remember its your opinion that counts, its your money thats paying for it.

I just think that the act of deliberately damaging a perfectly good guitar with the aim of deluding people into thinking that it has seen the world, or that the player is some sort of off-the-rails Pete Townsend & doesn't need a pristine musical instrument to sound good, is contrived, deceitful & pretentious.

I certainly wouldn't pay a professional to do it for me. But hey. To each his own I guess.

"Relicing" furniture, cabinets and other every day items has been around for who knows how long. I've not looked into the history or origins, but glazing furniture finishes and newly gold leafed items has probably been around for well over a century and for all I know (guessing), centuries.

Different strokes...

If you want to go there then you should consider that in many/most musical genres the entire act of the performance is contrived, deceitful and pretentious.

Ahem, I do believe that I covered myself with "MOST" of them. She is not a "most" though to be fair we haven't seen the rest of her bod!

I relics some of my guitars. I LOVE the best up worn relic look.

I feel like you guys are missing a key point, relics are typically bought by younger people who haven't been alive long enough to wear a guitar to that degree. I relics my guitar at 28 or so, I'd have to have had it since I was born to really wear it the way it looks now.

There is no posing involved, I am not trying to convince anyone else I played it for 50 years.

It is solely an aesthetic I prefer.

Well said! :cheers2:

For each and every person who who has taken offense to the premise of this thread...you're a complete f'ing pussy :D

It was meant as nothing more than a point of discussion on a completely subjective topic. We come here to share opinions and the article was an op-ed. How is this any different than talking about musical tastes and amp/effect preferences?

Everybody knows that you all can buy whatever you want and nobody here can dictate to you what's cool and what's not, blah, blah, blah. Lighten the hell up and shake the sand out of your collective vaginas you bunch of overly sensitive candy-asses. :jerkit:

I have seen hundreds of concerts, i have also played live a bunch of times.
I dont think everybody who plays a relic is trying to fool the crowd into thinking they did all the wear and tear. We live in a day where vintage and retro is considered cool. Everyday we see worn looking clothes, jeans, jackets, boots, glasses, wallets and millions of other things. Not everybody in the audience of a assumes your playing a vintage instrument. Most of the audience doesnt play a instrument or doesnt care if its real or relic, i usually hear somebody say that a guitar looks cool or sounds great but nobody has ever asked if thats a real 59 les paul. It seems like the people who are forums all day worry about that stuff, but your average crowd member couldnt care less.
