LMAO! I know exactly what you mean... This guy Rob use to ride around town with a Richenberg board strapped to the top of his AMC Concord, but he didn't surf! He use to show-up at the inlet, and would stand at the back of his car (sometimes wearing a wetsuit) with the board propped-up next to him.  He'd do that for about an hour or so, and then take off. He actually had Randy shape him that board, just so he could ride around posing as someone who surfs... Kooky!
See now THAT is a definite poseur. I would love to get a few bettys to chat with him one day after some killer sets to see what he said the surf was like... This is what I'm talking about. This is definite poseur material. And, considering he actually dons a wetty only to take it off an hour or so later, is also borderline pathological. This guy seriously thinks he's killing it Slater-style out there I bet :hys:
I haven't seen him in 17 years, and he lives less than 10 miles from me. He started a band (Mallet) back in 1994, and asked me to join... I asked him; "Can you actually sing, or do you just stand next to the mic?"

A quote from boogie nights perfectly explains my thoughts on relics:

"Wear what you dig."

ahhhhhhhh.......it all makes sense now.
Wet sand and buff?

I strip 'em to the wood and start over. Finish with wet sand and buff. Totally worth it.

So its like a wood working work shop/ concert that you do daily???

I do think relic'd guitars look cool. That is, I like guitars that have genuine war wounds, a story to tell, hold sentimental value, or have aged naturally beyond the integrity of the finish.

Paying for a professional guitar maker to purposefully destroy the finish of a guitar... but in an aesthetically pleasing way... doesn't make sense to me.

My definition of poseur is someone who goes out of their way or over the top to "look" the part and just cannot back it up with action. They get even more annoying when they start speaking as an authority or "someone in the know".
 That is exactly where I'm coming from in regard to my general dislike of relics. I suppose it's more about the people that I've come across in music retail, at clubs/gigs, and hosting a monthly open jam night than the guitars themselves. In my experience, the "relic" guys have been exactly what you describe above...trying to look like grizzled rock and blues veterans, talking up a great game, and then sucking beyond belief once they start to play (if they even have the nerve to play and not just talk).

So in review, I've come to realize that my issue is less about the relics themselves and more about the type of player who I personally associate with them to a large degree. A big thanks to all of you who helped me sort out my inner feelings and come to peace with this subject...you're all very special :emofag: :grim:

Oh, and fuck you Steve...you condescending asshole :D

Some people do care. Try to be more sensitive, mmkay?

Heres a question...What if after years of saving, you finally got your hands on a true vintage guitar, that happens to be well worn and naturally aged/reliced... Are you still a poser, since you were NOT the one who played that guitar for 40 years?

Totally.

And by implication, anyone with enough money to buy good gear can't play.

So you are double down bad.
