Relics are for Posers?

Guitar is a guitar. We do textured and relics, and will do nicer top guitars soon. The nice thing about a relic is I don't worry about getting a ding in my nice, new shiny guitar. Dings massively devalue those pretty guitars.

I rebuilt a '58 'vette to modern specs - because I like the look of the car - but wanted a daily driver, with modern conveniences and that kicked ass out of the pit. Some people called me a poser then - until we got on the track ;) In the end a car is a car, and a guitar is a guitar. Your $, do what you like. Just do it well ;)

Now about those guys that lift their 4xs and put body armor all over them and don't do anything more than go to the mall...

I'm a big fan of Relic guitars, but only when done right (Danocaster, Luxxtone, Nash etc.)

If it's the same metallic blue Vette I'm thinking of, you should post some pics of it here for others to enjoy.

There's a very big demand for it. It is each his own and nice to have choices. The OP posted this tastefully with the ? and article. I like this line taking away all words after Keith Richards.

Those who relic also give themselves away because they go too far. They’re not satisfied with a normal 50 years worth of wear. They want their guitars to look like Keith Richards himself personally played 50 years worth of gigs on it.

I LOVE relic guitars so I am a POSEUR. The guy who wrote this article is a douche bag. He has time and the self appointed authority to worry and weigh in about what other people like and choose to buy with their own money? I'm sure all the stores he goes into are only selling relic guitars so it is impossible to find a guitar that is pleasing to him anymore and that is why he is so concerned about this. I would be angry enough to write an article too if I was in his position.

Better yank up my hand scraped and distressed hardwood floors while I'm at it. Who cares that my wife liked them better than the other hardwood floors she was choosing from. She is a poseur. She wants her floor to look cool now and not when she is 74 years old. She should have bought a perfectly flat, cosmetically perfect hardwood floor now and spent the next 30 years walking around on it really hard, giving it that REAL hardwood floor "mojo".

Buy a guitar and relic it yourself by playing it for 30 years is such a great comment too. No really, it makes perfect sense. I look forward to being able to have something look the way I want it look when I am 76 years old and not a second sooner. As a matter of fact, I elect the guy in the article to buy all my future guitars for me. I'll just send him my money and he can choose what I get as I am obviously unqualified to spend my own money.

And I know the guy who wrote this article has a more impressive resume than I do. It's just the chick he is picking on in this article is on the COVER of her own album and it was released by a record label that had some other obscure artists called Brittney Spears and the Backstreet Boys.

She really needs an expert like the jackass who wrote this article to guide her career and her choice of guitars for her.

I'm not sure I really get why people would want to relic their guitars in the first place.
I like relic-ing my own through years of playing. All those dents, dings, scratches and wear marks are mine. It may sound stupid but it kinda deepens the emotional connection with the instrument.

...yeah I know, I've been playing this stupid instrument for way too long.

Curt, this is officially my favourite post of yours. EVER. :rawk:

Now, how do we go about "fixing" that hardwood floor of yours?...... ;)

Hey Curt - I was listening to your album on a flight today and I really, really dug the lead playing man! It was nice listening to it with fresh ears - the lead tone throughout are just killer as well! The songwriting really hit me this time as well - great stuff and really something to be proud of, man! Thanks - made my flight much more enjoyable and my plan to steal some of your lead licks (the ones I could possibly play anyway :D ) is now in place.

I'm still waiting for this fad to hit the automobile market, so I can sell my relic for a profit.

We are there. People spend big bucks and wait months for a car to be built that looks like it was cobbled together with spare parts in a weekend in some hillbilly's barn. It's called a Rat Rod.

For the record, I like Rat Rods, but the guys that do the above are really missing the point.

You should have been around in the HC and early Rig Talk days. I could rant at the drop of a dime. It's not normally worth the time anymore, but this guy really rubbed me the wrong way. I have no problem with rupe the OP in this thread either. He's a good guy.

As for the floors, we have been walking around on them for 6 years and as far as "real, non-poseur" wear and tear on them, it is virtually non-existent, just like it would be on a 6 year old guitar with a finish on the neck.

And to the guys who dislike relic guitars and think anyone who likes one should be rounded up and sterilized, I sure hope your guitar necks do not have an oil-finished or very thin, light satin finish on them. If they do, you are a poseur. You should have played that thick, heavy lacquer finish off your neck yourself, suffering through 30 years of an uncomfortable feeling neck to finally arrive at the amazing comfort afforded by an oil finished neck.

Impossible. I can't play guitar. I can't play leads people would "dig". I cannot achieve a "killer lead tone". I cannot write a song that would "hit" people.

I like relic guitars. I am a poseur. Poseurs can't do any of the above.

I like relic guitars too. Who gives a shit what people do with their money... an antique white relic guitar is a thing of beauty! Love the rusty hardware too! We don't all date the same type of women either but we'd probably bang most of them. Same goes for guitars, I'd play just about anything if it turned me on. I'm a poser/poseur too because i am not above a good relic.

I like the way relic guitars look. If you can play, no one can call you a poser for owning one. Obviously a lot of people dig 'em or everyone wouldn't be making them. To me, the word poser always had more to do with whether someone could play or not, rather than the guitar they played.

Steve
This..poseurs back in the 80's were the guys who had the full Marshall stack, 2 or 3 nice guitars, long hair and the outfits..but couldn't play for shit. But they got into bands because they looked the part, even though they could barely play bar chords. Hell all of my guitars are used as tools, not museum pieces that I polish every damn night. I guess it's all good if someone wants to pay for a relic look..it's their money right? I'd probably pass since all mine are a little beat, so I got the relic look covered..

I know that some of the reliced fenders and les Paul's look really cool if done properly, just as an authentic old strat owned by srv or anyone who played it to death for decades would. With that being said, there is something that does seem generic or poser like about someone with a big checkbook paying for something aged to look like he is an old bluesmen that hitch hiked across the country playing gigs in dive bars for 50 yrs. it doesn't bother me that someone else has a reliced guitar, it's just that I would feel corny playing it, especially if someone asked about it. Its kind of like how it is when they see people like Justin Beiber or Kanye west wearing an old Motörhead tour t shirt or a ramones shirt, they are faking it and cheapening the coulture in a way.
