They need to fix the security concerns with needing my social, my drivers license, my name, address, credit card info, and everything else that shit hole of a company demanded be on file to use the site.

All those items are to report taxes as a market facilitator and to cut down on scammers.

It makes the company a prime target for identity theft. It’s all fun and games until you get an apology letter in the mail and your whole life is fucked.

Your bank, the DMV and many state agencies have that data. There is no living under a rock in a digital age.

Comparing Etsy to a federally backed bank says a lot about your straw man fallacy. In the digital age you have to understand risks with your information and Etsy was not worth it.

Now that investors are involved it’s even more risky with the same policies in place because they’ll want to get back that money they just spent before they tear down policies that help itemize their bottom line.

How about city police departments like Dallas, Washington DC and others?

You guys are both right. They need your tax data now so no avoiding it. But yes, Etsy is a completely garbage company and your info will be hacked.

What about them? They arent E commerce sites where you control whether your information is on file or not. What you don’t know that you’re doing is proving my point even further. Fuck around with your social and a photo ID on a shopping site and find out what happens when they’re hacked and you’re spending the rest of your life fighting identity theft.

I’ve been notified 3x my data has been part of banking hacks, so far no ill effects, but my credit is locked down so the info is of no use to open new accounts.

Hate that on anyone. The wonderful thing about Reverb is you can make a choice not to put it out there in the first place and do business in other manners like storefronts, Craigslist, marketplace, or here on RT and still move gear.

This could be a positive thing; not all investment groups are created equally. They bought Reverb because they see at least some value in doing so. It's possible but unlikely that it's about acquiring their IP and parting/licensing that out. More likely, they think Reverb is doing as least some things right, and want to capitalize on that, and/or they see opportunities for improvement. I think Etsy was too focused on maximizing profits by increasing fees and stripping out service, rather than increasing profits via growth and non-destructive efficiencies. Hopefully the new owner will have a broader view of the bottom line.

Most non-local transactions will require a company like PayPal, which again has all your data. I live right outside NYC, so it’s easier for me to do local deals than a person in Montana. I understand why they need eBay and Reverb, the latter of which I’ve never sold on.

So why give out your information twice and not just use PayPal to broker your transactions to minimize risk? Oh thats right because Etsy didn’t give a fuck about personal data protection and wanted to become a payment processor as well as a music ecommerce website - but with zero customer support on either front. If they have zero care for your customer support, what makes you think they’d handle your data any better and not cut corners there too?

The company changed hands but nothing has changed in their policies. Like I said earlier there are less risky ways to sell gear and use companies who sole purpose is to broker funds transfers for transactions.

They were, actually. You could actually call Customer Service & get a human being. And, their Customer Service was excellent before Etsy.
Chicago music exchange is still a great company with the same level of service.
