December 8th, the same day John Lennon was shot. Dimebag to me was the last rock/metal/wutever guitarist to come up with a sound and style that was unique and nearly impossible to replicate. IMO, he's easily up there with RR, Jimmy, EVH (for you pop guys out there
), Muddy Waters, SRV, Robert Johnson, and the like. He took bits and pieces of the greatest techniques from different genres, put a unique spin on them, added a super slickery feel to them while remaining as aggressive as a serial killer in action. All the while doing it will the feel, honesty, and passion of even the best blues players, but retaining the power and brewtalness that even James Hetfield or Kerry King would be hard pressed to match. It's almost as if every great metal musician that has passed had their souls and spirits combined, and they came back as DBD. Even with all of the attention he got as a player he still remained a "regular dude" that was cool, and friendly as all get out. It was one of the saddest days in my life when I saw the newspaper article come out after hearing about it on Howard Stern on the way to work. I'm so glad I got to see him in his prime so many times, and equally as happy to have met him if even for just a moment. The smile and thumbs up he gave me when I showed him a pic of my 1980 Deam ML will be etched into my soul forever.
And of course.........
He came to rock, and he rocked like no other!
