To go along with Ralph's Ronni Le Tekro clip from this morning, here's mine. This is just a first attempt. Ronni has always had one of my favorite tones and I don't think I did it justice here but if you can, give me some suggestions for getting it closer. At some points it sounds like I have a wah wah in a fixed position like Schenker, but I don't. Also the Boss OD-1 is pretty scratchy. I think if I had a vintage Roland Tape Echo in line after it like Ronni that it might smooth that out a little.

Anyway, I'd like to use the standard Rig Talk disclaimer: Tons of mistakes, I don't know the riffs exactly, I'm just screwing around etc etc.

And here's Ralph's thread:

I used my old faithful Charvel from 1984. It has an old Duncan Custom in it. I went into the BF-2 Flanger then the OD-1 and then into my stock 1983 2204 JCM 800 into my Bogner cab with G12H30's. Mic'd with a vintage SM-57 into a vintage API mic preamp. I brought the mids way down on the amp from normally being cranked to about 11 o'clock but I think I need to bring them down even more.

I don't think putting 6550's in would help this get closer to Le Tekro. I think my low end in this clip and the single note stuff is very similar to Ronni's and I attribute that to that loosely tight EL-34 sag. As a matter of fact I would say Le Tekro's tone is like the poster boy tone for El-34's in a 2203 or 2204.
Don't make me come out there and mod your amp! You should try 6550's Curt. That grit will be gone. :)

I used 6550's for years and years. Most of the Marshalls in the USA came with 6550's in the late 70's and early 80's. However once I switched to EL-34's I have no desire to go back. 6550's sound great for other guys, but I like my bottom a little bit loose and saggy and not so tight and stiff. Cue donbarzini and his youtube link..... ;)

Yeah George, the funny thing is that if you NAIL it with your Wizard then we can all watch Curt squim while debating how to score a new Wizard :D

With all of this "loose and saggy bottom" talk, Curt is bound to score something. Whether it's a Wizard or something entirely different remains to be seen.

You should have me set up one for you then. Set them up right and you will hardly notice the difference other than the bottom end. If you would have heard my modded plexi, you would not have guessed they were 6550's.

Not going to those vid links....i know better!

You know there are some aspects of his tone that are very cool and others that are not. Finally getting some headway with my studio setup, maybe I'll make some attempts this weekend. Hard to say what amp Ill try though..... :D

I'll second Geo on the 6550's...I use to get really close to Ronni's tone way back when. Basically I was trying to copy him...I used a 50watt JMP Master Volume w/6550's, DOD 250, MXR EQ, Boss Delay, Marshall 4x12 loaded with GM70's and a Kramer Pacer loaded with those Schaller Pups. I can't remember my settings much except that I didn't crank the mids on the amp, and pushed them on the pedal. Few years later the 50 is blown up and I trade my 100 in for an ADA MP1 and then never ending tone quest began...that was a long freakin time ago.

It was close, real close. We used to play 10,000 Lovers...hardly anybody ever new the tune. Played some Vandenburg as well so I was very enamored with that cocked wah tone...and had no clue as to how those guys did it. Just tried my best.

Chub and Gain...you guys really nailed that stuff.

Incorrect. Everything about Ronni is dreamy.

You know, I usually hate and I mean I really Hate 6550 tubes but even though this pains me to say this there is something in those tubes that has a Le Tekro Vibe and Im only saying this because I remember saying this to myself when I did a Demo for Andy Fuchs' Viper amplifier. The amp was pretty much a rodded JCM800 with 6550 tubes and it definitely had a Ronni Type vibe to it.
I'll let you guys be the judge but the Rhythm tone has a Le Tekro vibe to it and I wasn't using anything. Id love to get that amp back and try it with the BF-2 lol

But with that said... I still dig el-34's better and with the BF-2 Im pretty happy :D

here is the 6550 clip!

That was an awesome clip! I definitely hear the Ronni LeTekro vibe with that one.

I have to say though, i like your recent Cali Mod clips a lot more

That's a great clip Ralph. Dare I say my favorite clip of yours ever. Maybe cuz the gain was lower than normal for you?  Still though great clarity and punch. That amp and that tone sound like it should have been a keeper for you. I would have shipped your Powerball back to Andy and said the UPS guy must have liked the Frost better than his Powerball and switched them. :gethim:

I do think it is Le Tekro-ish tonally. I think the only thing tonally in my clip that is Le Tekro like (after listening to it more) is the sag and sponge in those low end notes.

I am sure George can nail it with 6550's and some mods to the amp, but I think using EL-34's like Ronni actually does keeps me more on the right track. I am just all about EL-34's. It's my favorite tube ever. I'd like to try some old Sylvania 6CA7's though. That's the only tube with a 6 in it I'm interested in.

Sup Brother C!!

Im with you 100% with the 34's but I do hear what George is saying about the 6550's. With that said, Im pretty sure that Ronni used 34's and you figured out the real culprit being the Bf-2. Im really going to dig deep and see if I can nail it although based on some of the replies I got on my first clip I don't think everyones going to agree, so Ill have to settle on what I think :D One thing I do know for sure is that the louder I crank the amp, the more it sounds like Ronni and I start getting that bubbly sag that he is notorious for!!I

You bastards have dragged me into this now... I'm gonna try the BF-2 out and see what I come up with... think I'll try another riff though...
