My Taurus is class D and destroys. Crazy the power you can get from such a lightweight amp

That's an awesome setup you got there. The classic SVT's are hard to beat but damn are they heavy.
That's why I went with a rack. Everything has wheels.

That said, with the IEM rig and the cable snakes for everyone else, my rack is easily over 200 lbs. I feel like a monster when I deadlift it by myself into the trailer or on stage. My 8x10 is actually easier to move by a long shot. Then again, that is partially because my 8x10 has guitar cab handles on the bottom to make stairs really easy for 2 people. The 8x10 rocks; nobody wants to help move the box.

I agree the 8x10 is awesome but for ease of transportation I‘m happy with the Aguilars

MM Stingray 5 basses.

Kemper for amps & cabs.

For the conventional route I've been a big rap for the GK 400/800RBs and JBL bins since the late '80s. Fat, round, punchy.

For straight-up rock I'd go Ampeg.

I play bass and have played in bands, although by no means do I consider myself a real bassist. I am not picky when it comes to amps, but I pretty much have to have a Tech 21 Sansamp Bass DI...that's pretty much my "I can get it done if I have this" pedal.
That is what I use for my recordings. Love the Tech 21 stuff!!

Thats ok, I’m a manly man ?
Lifting an SVT up on top of the 810 definitely requires proper form haha.

I hate how the 810 doesn't have side handles. The wheels are a great thought but how is one person supposed to get it down stairs without side handles? It's a nightmare.

+1 on the 400RB, that was my baby with an Ampeg 4x10 for quite some time (friend borrowed it and broke it, that's another story). Used that with the Tech21 VT Bass pedal and was totally happy given that I don't play enough. No idea what GK has for current models though, assuming there is something out there better now. Don't sleep on the SansAmp stuff, great cheap options. I would get Darkglass stuff if I wasn't broke, but what can you do, lol
GK just released some rb legacy amps that seem aimed at capturing the 400/800rb vibe but with modern tech and weight.

Love the Sans Amp bass DI; just the normal black one. It really does sound like an SVT. Honestly thought it was closer to my SVT than my Axe FX III.

A great bass into a great DI/sansamp direct to FOH… what more do ya need? The sansamp plugs and actual hardware I’m willing to bet my last dollar have been used by like rock and metal bassists on records and live than just about anything, it’s a for sure win that will get the job done every time.

I love amps that can do double duty too. Mesa mark Iva is a great bass amp. Along with an ampeg v4. Switch out 3 coupling caps on the v4 if you are going to use it for bass more than guitar, effectively switching the coupling caps turns it into a v4b.

I have a Mark IV but I would be scared to use it for bass. I dont know why. Jo Beth form Bolt Thrower used a JCM800 for a bit. My buddy in Germany got a mesa bass head and cab for a couple hundred bucks. I never have luck like that.

Most of the guitar amps I've run a bass through sound great. Particularly old Marshalls. The problem is volume/headroom. If you don't need to be loud or you don't mind sounding like Lemmy, you're golden. But otherwise it's a struggle without an amp with a lot of power.

And best to use a dedicated bass cab because the cone excursion from the bass frequencies can damage normal guitar speakers at loud volumes. Generally ok at low volumes though it makes me nervous.

I have used my Mesa Mark IV with two EVM12L. All three channels can be set clean and the GEQ is useful.
I have also had good results with the Deliverance 120 and Bivalve with KT88. The line out on the THD Bivalve is the best I have heard.

My bass player occasionally uses these rigs. I don't play much bass myself these days. But see a lot more in the next few years.

I play bass about 75% of the time, went through a rig overhaul 4 years ago after being inactive for awhile - became big fan of GK stuff, old and new. Co-founder Bob Gallien is still running the company with many models made/assembled in California (some overseas), he's very active on TalkBass forum - have had him personally respond at crazy hours to a technical question & ship small replacement parts for free, long after warranty expired. Cannot say enough about the company. Use a 700RB-II, and a Class D hybrid MB500 Fusion (also great) , with Neo 410 for gigs and Neo 112 for practice. The older generation Neo cabinets with silver grills are widely available used, the latest (Neo IV) much harder to find & pricey. The previous generation 410 sounds awesome, weighs about 68 lbs, relatively easy to haul. I also have Darkglass preamp pedals, like Vintage ultra best, use with the GK heads/cabs, never tried them to FOH.

I should have mentioned running them through a bass cab, unless your guitar cab has evm12ls.

The key with using guitar amps for bass is headroom as you mentioned as well as a good output transformer. Tried a 69 fender bandmaster reverb with my bass and it was aweful, but it has a very small output transformer.

I found the ampeg v4 to be about the same volume as the ampeg svt3pro, but the svt3pro had significantly more headroom, so it really depends on what I am playing as what which I prefer.

I knew a guy when I was an early teenager that went to a local music store and got store credit. He went from a cheap pawn shop bass and peavey to a GK400, a huge cab and a new bass. He sounded amazing like night and day difference. Always loved the GK sound.

I got a buddy who has played in a couple punk bands locally for most of our adult lives and he has a fender bassman but he started grabbing the old peavey heads (like pre mark III heads) and sounds great.

Dude has been 100% a bass player his whole life and while I'm technically a better player, he sounds so much better. He can play a shitty Ramones type progression but his rhythm and finger tone is damn solid. Like each note is perfect in the amount of force he hits the note and the rhythm. I don't know if that makes sense but I can always hear the difference in a bass player and a guitarist who happens to play bass.

The spector performer bass I ordered should show up Monday. I'm excited. I may try to talk my buddy in Germany into selling me his Mesa bass 400+. He has offered in the past but I turned it down. I think he paid 200 for the head and cab. Even with astronomical shipping I would probably still make out pretty good after his profit and shipping.

I just updated my bass rig, got a Darkglass Alpha Omega 500 head and Darkglass 1x12 cab. I practice in a group where they have Roland v drums and the guitarists play through modelers, so this Rig is plenty loud enough. If I was playing bar gigs with a loud drummer then I’d have gone with the 900 and a bigger cab. I usually play either an NS Design (modern Steinberger) 4 string or an Ibanez EHB 5 string bass.

If you go with the Mesa or another rig, you can still get the GK sound via their pedal format Plex preamp.I've never played one, read favorable feedback from other GK fans.
