What hype ? Bogner cabs have been extremely popular and selling well for 15 years now.
I've A/B'd the Bogner & Splawn cabs. For the money Splawn is a better deal. For the best tone I feel the Splawn could not quite match the Bogners depth, richness and room filling projection. The Splawn sounded a bit boxier. YMMV.
you're right. an unloaded new splawn cab is around $400 give or take for a 13-ply-birch cabinet versus a basketweave cabinet "that is not over-engineered" as bogner puts it on their site. an unloaded bogner cab i can guarantee is not $400 new.
unless its made out of a different wood or wood construction, i cant justify bogner being any better than a marshall cabinet with simillar construction methods.
its hype in my opinion. the cabinet dimensions and basketweave material can account for resonance and tonal dictation differences. the only thing that could raise the price that much is the name. the wood they are using, which is not listed, and how much wood they are using - 8 ply, 9ply, 13 ply, etc.
the only company that has engineered their cabinets from scratch are mills cabinets, and i would like to try a mills over a splawn to see what differences can be had. but even then for the money it would be hard pressed to justify the tonal differences. they would have to be pretty substancial - but at least they have a reason for the price difference.
see my point?
I don't think Bogner cabs are worth $1200 new or whatever ridiculous price they're charging now. The fact remains they have their own sound, and they are most certainly not made like a Marshall. Different materials, construction, dimensions, etc.
You must know by know in this boutique world you often have to pay 90 % more for a 10 % improvement. For some its not worth it. For others its all the difference in the world, especially if you've been only 90 % happy with your tone for a long time. Then that last 10 % makes sense.
I'm going to venture that you have not tried a Bogner cab since I think you're the same guy who judged the oversized Mills without ever trying it.
