Splawn Cabs.......

I just threw 2 Vet 30's and 2 Vet 75's in my Splawn cab a couple days ago, but haven't tried it out yet.

I was surprised by the construction. I am planning on building myself some clones and they look VERY easy to duplicate.
I assumed the cab would have finger joints. I didn't know the corners had rabbets though.

I am excited to bring the cab home now.

My Splawn 4x12 cab had Emi's in an X pattern (Gov/MoW's)...and I HATED it. Brittle, harsh, flubby...you get the point. I threw some G12 65's in it and the cab sounded much better...but still not as good as my vintage Marshall cabs.

Splawn makes some good cabs. I always like Shredder's cab.

With that said, I am all set and happy with my cabs.

I brought out a cab loaded with 80's and Carl seemd to like it...but I am sure Carl could play through a Smokey amp and sound killer

whats you're current favorite setup? i know you have like 12 cabinets lol, makes me wanting 4 splawns seem just fine and dandy :D

Heck, a few weeks ago I was just using one cab...a Cameron 4x12 loaded with 80's with a delay pedal in the loop.

Damn Dave, mojo sent for having to scale down to that little rig

Hi Folks,

Sorry for the late reply ... did get the correct "square bit" for my drill and popped open the Splawn cab. It is loaded with Big Block 60 Watt speakers.

As Ralph said, we tested 4 cabs the other night. I needed to pick one to be my primary recording cab. Ralph was willing to loan me his 4x12 with the 30's if that happened to be "the one". But it turned out to be the weakest of the bunch. Sorry Ralph!  Interestingly the Big Blocks are supposedly copies of the H30's. But boy o' boy ... there was a big difference between Ralph's 4x12 and my Splawn 4x12.

Ralph and I both favored the Splawn and the Cornford 4x12. Both were excellent. The Cornford did have more biting top end, and the Splawn was smoother. But both had great tone. The Cornford is loaded with V30's ... so to really compare the cabs themselves, we would have to load the same speakers in both. Which isn't going to happen!  The Splawn 4x12 will be my main recording cab. The cab really works well for my playing style.

My Marshall 4x12 is loaded in an X pattern with V30's and Greenbacks. And it did sound good ... but Ralph and I still seemed to favor the Splawn and Cornford.

Finally, you can go a little nuts with all this gear testing. And I need to actually get back to recording music! Yesterday, Dave Miranda and I spent the entire day testing A-D converters ... trying to pick the best one for our purposes! Enough already!

Carl

ps. Dave, your cab at Greg's ampfest did sound awesome! You wanna bring it by for some A-B testing?!

Then go for the Cornford!! great sounding cab!

I think i will keep an eye on eBay UK and see if i can score a Cornford 4x12, to save myself some £££
Dan, I had a Cornford 2x12 some years ago and if I can remember correct it sounded great, didnt like the amps, :D A local store here are selling all their Cornford stuff for half price, hmm, maybe I should get a cab.

Hey Ralph, how did you like the Cornford cab?

I liked it a lot. It Sounded Killer. It had more High end then the Splawn and it also had a totally different feel but that's more then likely because of the Speakers. The Splawn was easier to play on but Id be happy with either cab. My Cab sounded like Hammered Crap compared to the Cornford or Splawn. I can get rid of it fast enough lol
Ralph, have you tried the Cali with Cornford cabs?

I'm pretty sure especially in this point in my life after analyzing and experimenting with everything that Cabs are just like Guitars. You either get a good sounding one or you don't LOL. With that said, after hearing and comparing one of my cabs against 3 other cabs that even a beat Splawn cab will sound better then one of the cabs I own LMAO.

I need to start over again because I most definitely have a few duds in the aresenal both guitar wise and Cab wise!

It was Awesome Hanging with you again and there is no harm in telling the truth...... My cab sounded like utter ass LMAO :D I'm actually happy that I had the opportunity to do this because even when we first started I did mention to you that my cab was kind of dead sounding but I had NO IDEA it was that bad lol!! I see a Splawn/Big Block speaker cab in my near future!

Im going to really be letting a lot of stuff go in order to revamp my setup and I'm most definitely going back to the basics which seemed to work for me.

YOU ROCK!

I'm pretty sure that we did and Carl can correct me if I am wrong but I think that Carl recorded his Cali clips with the cornford cab.

Take a trip over to the store and take the Cali with you

I definitely want to try my amps with a Cornford 4x12, to see how it sounds. I was looking for a V30 loaded 4x12 anyway, so the Cornford looks like a good option!

Awesome!! Carl's tone is killer on the Cali Mod videoclip on YouTube

Awesome, I am getting the chance to try out my Friedman amp with a Splawn SB loaded 4x12 this week. Anyone use that combo with Friedmans amps?

Cool Ralph ... I am looking to get another Splawn cab for live. The Big Block one is locked in the amp room now. I may try an X pattern for the next cab ... have heard some good things about the Small Blocks. Looks like some more A-B testing coming down the pike.

built like a brick shit house and are not $1,000 a piece like all of the bogner cabinet hype

What hype ? Bogner cabs have been extremely popular and selling well for 15 years now.

I've A/B'd the Bogner & Splawn cabs. For the money Splawn is a better deal. For the best tone I feel the Splawn could not quite match the Bogners depth, richness and room filling projection. The Splawn sounded a bit boxier. YMMV.

Yes! That is the word I was looking for to compare the Avatar with the Splawn. The Avatar is 'boxier' sounding. It does cleans, mid-gain, and classic rock fine, but it gets boxy vs. the same gain and volume through the Splawn.

i have a splawn with celestion v30s.personally i would buy another splawn instead of looking for a different brand.

imo

splawn=win!

you're right. an unloaded new splawn cab is around $400 give or take for a 13-ply-birch cabinet versus a basketweave cabinet "that is not over-engineered" as bogner puts it on their site. an unloaded bogner cab i can guarantee is not $400 new.

unless its made out of a different wood or wood construction, i cant justify bogner being any better than a marshall cabinet with simillar construction methods.

its hype in my opinion. the cabinet dimensions and basketweave material can account for resonance and tonal dictation differences. the only thing that could raise the price that much is the name. the wood they are using, which is not listed, and how much wood they are using - 8 ply, 9ply, 13 ply, etc.

the only company that has engineered their cabinets from scratch are mills cabinets, and i would like to try a mills over a splawn to see what differences can be had. but even then for the money it would be hard pressed to justify the tonal differences. they would have to be pretty substancial - but at least they have a reason for the price difference.

see my point?
