I play a Pro Stock, but I plan to sell it as I just don't need a 100 watt amp these days. I'm looking at a SS with EL-34s. I don't like that it doesn't have the solo boost, but can live with that on the SS. I never use Mode 3 on the PS, I just boost Mode 1 and 2 with a TC Spark Boost.

Has anyone tried the SS with EL-34s? I know it can do blues to early metal. Can it get some decent modern rock tones, too? I play in a hard rock cover band and sometimes need a more modern hard rock tone.

Thanks!

I never tried one with EL34s but I had the same idea of downsizing from a Quick Rod to the Super Sport. I did not like it AT ALL. I quickly went back to the QR and sold the SS ASAP. The SS did not have the bite and sounded real mid scooped to me. Could not get rid of it quick enough. It is still pretty heavy too, so your not really saving much over the 100 watt head.

Get the 50 watt QR with EL34's. You can even half power it to 25 watts. Love mine.

I have two of them , one I bought second hand and the orignal owner ordered it with EL34s. The other I bought new with 6v6s and had it converted to EL34s last year. Gave it a nice bump in volume and the mids are thicker and more present . I play classic rock to classic metal , I never really try to squeeze any modern tones out of them. Love em both

Sweet, man. Have you ever played the QR or Street Rod? ...I know these things can thump even with 6v6's and I'm sure the EL34s bring in the mids. Does it get overly bright? That's my only complaint with the Pro Stock I have is that it can get a bit 'squelchy' and bright with certain pickups and speakers.

I'm also sad it does not come with the solo boost!!!

I should have probably noted in the my other post that I don`t gig I just play at home , loud I might add but I`m not sure how the SS would sit in a band setting . I had a Quick Rod that I foolishly sold and to my ears there wasn't a huge tone difference ompared to the SS and I`m gonna assume that was because I was using the volume loop to tame both amps as to not blow my ears out so I never really got to open the Quick Rod up but if I was gigging I`d probably look into the Quick Rod or Competition if you don`t need a clean channel . I had a Competiton also that I foolishly sold and it was a bit louder and beefier than my EL34 SS`

Had a 2010 QR loved it but didn't need 100 watts.. Went to the SR had it for a couple years also great put a ton of wear on it and decided to go back to head and cab set up again Scott built me a Competition 50 watt in a mini head box with all the mods I absolutely love it best Splawn out of the three!

So now you got me thinking. I don't ever use a clean channel, so I like the idea of the Compy. Questions:

1) Is it pretty compact as a mini? ...I bet it's still pretty heavy.

2) What mods are you referring to? New/Old, Mid Switch? ...I read somewhere that Scott can add a switch that will make the QR sound closer to a Nitro which really would be great, since play in a cover band and we cover a lot of hard rock ground.

Cheers!
