Talk me into (not) buying a Marshall 8100 100v

Listen to this... IMO it does sound really good

that sounds like the classic 8100 we all know and love

I've got one and it definitely does that specific 8100 tone well! If it was my only amp I don't think I'd be thrilled as I wouldn't call it super versatile. I don't think that's as big of a problem for some of the other SS amps mentioned (like the Randalls - I think I could probably rock an old RG and be very content). Just to throw in another option while we're talking solid-state, I'm a big fan of Randall amps and the post-RG amps specifically are cool in my opinion...I've got a Cyclone now that I fixed up that I like a lot. Not sure if those ones are as reliable as some of these other amps talked about but definitely something to consider.

Keep in mind they sound like total shit without a boost (in my opinion)

I owned an 8200 for years and with a boost it was incredible; tightest amp response ever

Edit: oh shit I see you found one already

I used to do clips of my 8200 that way (direct to interface with no cab) but they were all uploaded to Netmusicians.org/Tonefinder which has disappeared

Fuck I miss Tinefinder so much! I was able to find so many cool clips there! U still got some of em?

You got some real good tones there. Were you using a boost in those videos?

I have an old original valvestate 8080 combo I cut down into a head that’s in the back of my closet. Maybe I’ll dig it out tomorrow, it’s been a long while since I’ve used it.

Thx dude, I really appreciate that! No I didn't use a boost and I don't think it's necessary. Most of the times I record straight into my interface using some of my favorite IRs plus eq cut low end and thats it. I'm really impressed to be honest I didn't have high expectations for what this amp can do!

Try to listen 8100 at some live concert. It was always buzzy mess, no matter who played it. And there were more than few guys who plays them in late 90’s in our area. It falls in the same paradigm like Dimebag Randalls, sounds good only in hands pf the guys that make them famous.
And if somebody can’t tell difference between this POS and good and cheap tube (6505/DSL) amp...maybe 8100 is what he deserves ?

lol, I was going to say something earlier when you said the 8100 was trash. Now I see where you are coming from. I agree. I would not want one for a live band but you can not deny the 8100 is good for recording death metal tones. Same with the Ampeg 140c. Between the Death records and Misery Index alone...they are both great recording amps. I would probably go with a boosted 800 or a 2 channel dual for live use though. I've just never been able to make ss amps work for high gain band situations.

This is something what I was trying to say. With good playing and good recording skills You can make everything sounds good on record, even plugins ( O. Englund, R. Massad, P. Thorn...etc) You have studio drums sound , bass...
I always judge amps by live/rehearsal sound because for (home) recording I don't even bother with tube amp when KPA/Fractal is available. I played 8100 for some time in late 90's because I haven't money for some better gear so I know this amp very good and wanted to share some opinion.

i just dont understand how this is such a thing with so many people :dunno: going back to the 90s and unmic'd shitty clubs, i never knew if 8100's or ampegs or whatever other amp was tube or SS nor did i care, i just knew i saw enough death metal and hardcore bands using them and sounding brutal every time to know thats what i wanted. i then got my own ampeg and had numerous bands where i never had to turn much over 9 oclock on the volume in any situation so i cant figure out how guys struggle so much with SS amps?

The contour knob is what fucked up most people. They think it sounds good when they're at home alone with it cranked up, but in a band context you need to dial it way the hell back. It literally sucks out all the mids when it's cranked up. It just as well have been called the anti-mids knob. Keep it below noon, or better yet, around 9:00 and you could dial it into brutality that cuts just fine.

Another thing with them is the cab impedance. Run into a 16 ohm cab and it WILL disappear. 8 ohms were fair to middlin. 4 ohms and it'll bring the freakin' thunder. That's the joy of solid state power amps.

I'm sure part of it was I was probably scooping way too many mids in those days. But it was also a feel thing...hard to describe. Good tube amps just seem to "push back" a little against your playing. I really struggle to explain it to someone else. And I'm not against ss amps at all. I've owned the valvestates, the 140c, peaveys, crates, etc. And to this day, my daily practice set up is still a psa1.1 straight into my recording rig.

I also came up in the 90s hardcore and death metal scenes. Hard to believe I wanted a Crate gx100 or whatever they were called that a ton of bands were using back then. I believe it was a similar circuit to the 140c.

im one that kind of likes that "immediate" feel in SS amps at least for death and faster metal. i have a gx130c, thats another one i gigged with. its not as close to the vh140c as the internet would lead you to believe but it kicks ass too and some days i like it even more than the ampeg.

I totally agree!
