Is that the 6 knob AOR?

I had one for a VERY short time. Sounded like a dry hacking cough.

Looks like that's an 8 knobber. As far as I'm aware, just the same amp with more gain.

I had 3 over the years. All 50 watts. The first two were Series 1, and the last was Series 2. The 8-knob AOR amp, not the 6 knob.

I was able to get good sounds out of both, the Series 2 was a bit more easy to balance the two "channels". I would kind of like to revist one, but I don't want to spend the money people are asking for them now.

I tried one years ago and thought it was thin, congested and weak sounding, but who inows if it was working right or what speakers were in the Marshall cab it was plugged into as it was at a Music go Round. Crate Stealth combo next to it fucking slayed even through the built in speaker.

The early Laney Pro Tube 6 knobbers were great amps. Essentially a rip off of the 2203/4 circuit until Marshall sent them a cease and desist. Matt Pike made the the 6 knob AOR version sound pretty good too-

I have a 6 knobber LANEY Pro Tubes.. which sounds AMAZING .. as a rewired PTP JCM800 with a few mods. :D

But seriously i played extensively with it stock when i got it and a couple of things about this amp. Some of the mods sucked. Were fizzy. But before you pulled any knobs to switch in anything. you had to get the Volume UP. It was a much better and actually good sounding amp with the VOL up past 5.

I prefer it as is now. I had also needed to swap in a tranny so mine now has a True Classic transformer and has a ton of bite. It is a really damn good 800 thanks to mallory caps and my own proprietary blend of mods. ( 3 part swaps and a switch for tighter bass - maybe i could charge 400$ for the mod?? )

I’ve had a stock, 6 knob, 50 watter for over 10 years now and it’s always sounded great. Pretty much a Laney 800. Takes a pedal just as well. volume at 4, pre on 6. Sounds great. I run it with the bass pulled for the low end boost but run the pot low. This is a video from a while after I got it. It’s pretty much the first Sword Album.
I haven’t liked any 8 knob version I’ve played.

Yes, that's how I remember running mine now, bass pulled but at zero. It was a good sounding circuit, no shame in it at all. Just needed a bit of dialing in. In hindsight I probably should have just left it as is because i have a few 800's now.

I had a modded 50 watt 8 knob for a long time. I got it off ebay in the mid-2000's for like $300. It had been rewired into a single channel and a couple other things I forget, but still sounded like an AOR. Very bright amp. It was very much like an 800 with a lot more low end and a lot more gain, but the gain was pretty unusable. It was just super hairy and woolly. However, with a good boost up front and finding the sweet spot with the gain it could sound awesome. It was really loud and punchy for 50 watts. I sold to some guy on HCAF who had me send it parcel post to a Navy base in Hawaii - I packed that thing to survive Davy Jones' locker.

I remember at the time I got my AOR I was coming from a Rev G Recto. Talk about two very different amps! I was too young and green at the time to appreciate what the AOR was, I ended up moving it on pretty quick. Those pull active EQ controls were bananas, pretty much unusable.

I would like to retry one now that I'm (hopefully) wiser and see what I could do with it.
